Chapter 2

Raina arrived at the Ironveil border forty-seven hours after I sent the message.

She came under the cover of a routine inter-pack courtesy visit—something about coordinating patrol routes between Silverfang and Ironveil territories. The border guards logged her entry without question. Beta-ranked warriors from allied packs passed through all the time.

I met her in the forest beyond the pack house's surveillance range, where the eastern trail curved into dense pine cover. Zoe was with Sera, the pack healer, for a checkup. I had two hours.

Raina stepped out from behind a cluster of birch trees, her warrior's posture relaxed but her eyes sharp. She looked exactly as I remembered—dark hair cropped short, practical clothing, the kind of face that gave nothing away until she decided otherwise.

"Amelia," she said quietly.

I didn't waste time on greetings. I handed her my phone with the photographed supply ledger pulled up. "Cabin 17. Eastern boundary. Newborn. Formula deliveries every week for the past two months."

She studied the screen. Her expression didn't change.

I showed her the next photo—the empty freezer shelf. "Leona was storing my expressed milk. All of it's gone. The same night I smelled formula from the eastern trail."

Raina's jaw tightened slightly. Still, she said nothing.

I pulled up the final image—the mind-link fragment I'd managed to capture through the cracked channel, Tyler's voice recorded in text form by a frequency overlap I'd spent three days learning to manipulate: *The girl's recovering slower than expected. We move at the Naming Ceremony as planned.*

"He calls me 'the girl,'" I said. My voice came out flat. Clinical. "His mother calls me 'a temporary incubator.' I heard that one two nights ago."

Raina looked up from the phone. Her eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw something flicker across her face—not shock, but a cold, focused anger that made her look suddenly dangerous.

"Tell me about the cabin," she said.

I described what I knew. The location. The supply orders. Leona's handwriting. The scent of my milk layered with formula. The newborn mentioned in the delivery note.

Raina listened without interrupting. When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said, very carefully: "You think Tyler built a cabin with pack funds to house a mistress and a child."

"I think he's been planning this for months," I said. "I think the pregnancy, the labor, the recovery period—all of it was just the timeline he needed to set everything in place. And I think he's going to reject me at Zoe's Naming Ceremony. Publicly. In front of the entire pack and his father."

Raina's expression went flat. "The Lycan King will be there."

"Exactly," I said. "Tyler thinks the spectacle will work in his favor. A devoted Alpha making a hard choice. Installing a new Luna. I'll be too broken to fight back, and the pack will accept it because he's the Alpha and I'm just—" I stopped. Took a breath. "I'm just the chosen mate who couldn't even shift."

Raina's hand moved to my shoulder. Her grip was firm. Steady. "What do you need me to find?"

I met her eyes. "Financial records. Construction authorizations. Anything connecting Tyler or Leona to Cabin 17's funding. If he used pack money, there's a trail. I need it."

She nodded once. No hesitation. No questions about risk or jurisdiction or what it would cost her to operate outside Silverfang's territory without sanction.

"How long do I have?" she asked.

"The Naming Ceremony is in nine days," I said.

Raina's mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Then I'll have it in six."

---

The trail camera delivered its first footage the following night.

I watched it alone in the Alpha suite, Zoe asleep in her bassinet, the playback device hidden inside a drawer of baby clothes Tyler never touched.

The timestamp read 2:47 a.m.

Leona appeared on screen, moving through the pack house kitchen with the careful, routine purpose of someone who'd done this many times before. She opened the industrial freezer. Pulled out four bags of Luna-blessed milk—my milk, marked with my handwriting, dated from the week after Zoe's birth.

She placed them in an insulated carrier bag.

Then she walked out the kitchen's side door and headed toward the eastern trail.

The camera angle caught her face clearly. No hesitation. No guilt. Just efficient movement.

I watched the footage three times.

Then I copied it onto a sealed evidence crystal and hid the crystal inside the lining of Zoe's diaper bag—the one place Tyler would never think to search.

The next morning, I set out Leona's favorite tea in the main sitting room. When she arrived, I smiled and asked how she was sleeping.

"Well enough," she said, settling into the chair across from me. "And you, dear? Is the baby letting you rest?"

"She's sleeping beautifully," I said. "I think the milk is really agreeing with her."

Leona's expression softened. "Of course it is. Luna-blessed milk is the best thing for a newborn. You're doing wonderfully."

I poured her tea. Handed her the cup. "I'm so grateful for all your help. Managing the freezer supply, offering advice—I don't know what I'd do without you."

She reached across and patted my hand. "That's what family does, Amelia."

I smiled. Nodded.

And I thought: *You stole from my daughter. You stole from me.*

But I said nothing.

I just sipped my tea and let her talk about the Naming Ceremony preparations, cataloging every word for the tribunal I was building in silence.
