Chapter 3

Leona arrived at the Alpha suite just after ten in the morning, carrying a glass bottle filled with something dark and herbal.

I was nursing Zoe by the window when I heard the knock. Three light taps, perfectly measured. The kind of knock that announced itself as considerate before the door even opened.

"Amelia, dear?" Leona's voice came through. "May I come in?"

I adjusted Zoe's position and called out, "Of course."

The door opened. Leona stepped inside with that practiced grace she wore like a second skin—former Luna posture, every movement calibrated for an audience even when there wasn't one. She crossed to me, the bottle held carefully in both hands.

"I brought you a recovery tonic," she said, setting it on the side table. "An old recipe. It helped me tremendously after Tyler was born."

"Thank you," I said. My voice came out warm. Grateful. Exactly the tone a devoted daughter-in-law should use. "That's so thoughtful."

Leona's gaze dropped to Zoe. Something shifted in her expression—a softness that looked almost genuine. "May I?"

I hesitated for half a second. Just long enough to feel my wolf press against the inside of my chest. Not a voice. Not a warning. Just a low, formless wrongness that made my skin prickle.

But I smiled. "Of course."

I eased Zoe off my breast and handed her over. Leona took her with the practiced confidence of someone who'd held many babies, cradling Zoe against her shoulder and making those soft cooing sounds that grandmothers make.

"She's beautiful," Leona murmured. "And she takes after Tyler's side, doesn't she? Look at those eyes. That's Lawson blood."

I watched Leona's hands on my daughter. Watched the way she touched Zoe's hair, adjusted the blanket around her tiny body. The same hands that had stolen my milk. The same hands that had carried it out the kitchen door night after night, feeding it to another woman's child.

My wolf stirred again. Stronger this time. Not dormant anymore. Awake enough to register the specific wrongness of this moment—Leona holding Zoe while plotting to exile us both.

I kept my face composed. "She does have his eyes."

Leona smiled. "It's a blessing, really. Strong bloodlines matter in this world." She paused, her gaze still on Zoe. "You've done well, Amelia. Bringing a healthy pup into the pack. Tyler must be so proud."

"He is," I said quietly.

Leona handed Zoe back to me. Her fingers brushed mine as she transferred the weight, and for a moment I felt the temperature drop—just a degree, just enough to notice.

"The Naming Ceremony is only six days away," Leona said. "Are you feeling strong enough to attend?"

"I wouldn't miss it," I said.

"Good." She picked up the tonic bottle and pressed it into my free hand. "Drink this twice a day. It'll help with the recovery. You need your strength."

I looked down at the dark liquid. "What's in it?"

"Herbs. Minerals. Nothing you need to worry about." Leona patted my shoulder. "Just trust me, dear. I know what new mothers need."

I met her eyes. Smiled. "Thank you, Leona. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Something flickered across her face—satisfaction, maybe. Or relief. Then she turned and walked to the door.

"Rest well, Amelia," she said. "I'll see you at dinner."

The door closed behind her.

I stood there for thirty seconds, holding Zoe in one arm and the tonic bottle in the other. Then I walked to the bathroom and poured the entire contents down the sink. I rinsed the bottle three times and set it on the counter, empty.

Then I returned to the main room, laid Zoe in her bassinet, and pulled out my breast pump.

I expressed four ounces. Sealed it in a container. Walked to the closet and hid it behind a stack of blankets Tyler never touched.

Then I expressed another six ounces. Put those into labeled bags. Dated them. Walked them down to the pack house kitchen and placed them carefully on the freezer shelf where Leona would find them.

Decoys.

I returned to the suite. Locked the door. Sat at my desk and opened my journal.

*Leona visited. Recovery tonic (discarded). Held Zoe. Commented on Lawson bloodlines. Confirmed Naming Ceremony attendance. Decoy milk placed in freezer.*

I closed the journal. Looked at the trail camera's receiver device hidden in the drawer.

That night, at 2:47 a.m., the camera recorded Leona entering the kitchen. She moved with the same efficient purpose I'd seen before. Opened the freezer. Removed all six bags of decoy milk. Placed them in her insulated carrier.

Then she walked out the side door toward the eastern trail.

I watched the footage twice. Copied it onto the evidence crystal. Added it to the sealed file.

The evidence file now contained: supply ledger photos, freezer footage, mind-link transcription, and financial records Raina had delivered two nights ago—construction authorizations for Cabin 17, signed by Tyler, funded through a falsified border-patrol budget.

Everything.

I sat in the dark Alpha suite, Zoe sleeping in her bassinet, and felt my wolf press against my ribs again. Not dormant. Not silent.

Waiting.

Six days until the Naming Ceremony.

Six days until I called the Luna Accord before the Lycan King himself and watched Tyler's carefully constructed lie collapse in front of three hundred wolves.

I looked at my daughter. Then I whispered into the darkness: "He will not take you from me."

My wolf stirred in agreement.

And for the first time in thirteen years, I felt her answer back.
