Chapter 3

Grayson moved fast.

I heard about it from Caden Wolfe two days after I crossed the boundary line. He called while I was sitting in a diner three towns over, the kind with cracked vinyl booths and coffee that tasted like the pot hadn't been cleaned since 2015. I had my ledger open on the table. I was eating eggs I couldn't taste.

"Your replacement is redecorating," Caden said without preamble. His voice had that dry edge he used when he was annoyed but trying not to show it. "She's all over the pack social channels. Announcing herself as Luna. Tagging allied packs like we're supposed to congratulate her."

I set my fork down. "Before the marking ceremony?"

"Before anything." He paused. "My mate saw the post this morning. She pulled it up on her phone, stared at it for about ten seconds, then deleted the tag and said—and I'm quoting here—'That woman has never sat across a table from us.'"

I felt my wolf shift. Not angry. Satisfied.

"She hasn't," I said quietly.

"No. You have." Another pause. "Grayson's hosting a Pack Summit. Three days from now. Says he wants to reaffirm alliances and introduce his new Luna properly. Sent formal invitations to all five Iron Pact Alphas."

I picked up my coffee. It was cold. I drank it anyway. "Are you going?"

"No." His voice flattened. "Neither is anyone else. I've been on calls all morning. Dennison's out. Kira's out. Voss sent back a one-line decline that I'm pretty sure his Beta wrote because it was too polite. And Margot didn't even respond."

I closed my eyes. I let myself feel it for just a moment—the small, vicious satisfaction of watching something collapse that I had spent ten years holding up.

"Sophia," Caden said, and his tone shifted. "Where are you?"

I opened my eyes. I looked out the diner window at the parking lot, the gas station across the street, the highway stretching north. "Neutral ground."

"Stay there. I'm coming to you."

He hung up before I could tell him not to.

*He respects you,* my wolf said. *He always did.*

I knew that. I had known it during the negotiation sessions, the way Caden listened when I spoke and didn't look past me to Grayson for confirmation. But knowing it in a meeting room and hearing it now, in a diner three towns away from the only pack I'd ever called home, felt different.

I went back to my eggs. I made myself finish them.

Caden arrived two hours later with his Beta, a quiet man named Rhys who nodded once and took a seat by the door. Caden slid into the booth across from me. He looked at my ledger, still open on the table, and his mouth twitched.

"You kept records."

"Of course I did." I turned the ledger toward him. "Every treaty. Every compromise. Every territorial concession I negotiated while Grayson signed his name at the bottom."

Caden leaned forward. He read for a long time. When he looked up, his face was grim.

"He never attended a single meeting, did he?"

"No."

"And we all thought—" He stopped. He rubbed his jaw. "We all thought he was the one doing the work."

"That's what he wanted you to think."

Caden sat back. He looked at me the way you look at someone you're seeing clearly for the first time. "The Iron Pact doesn't answer to Shadowridge," he said quietly. "It answers to you. It always has."

I didn't say anything. I didn't need to.

He pulled out his phone. He typed something fast, then set it on the table between us. "Formal redirection of allegiance. Ironwood Pack to Sophia Willis. No pack designation required. Effective immediately."

I stared at the screen. The words were simple. Legal. Binding.

"Caden—"

"You earned it," he said. "Ten years ago, and every year since. This isn't charity. This is paying a debt."

I picked up the phone. I read it twice. Then I forwarded it to the other four Iron Pact Alphas with a single line: *Ironwood has redirected. Your choice.*

The responses came in fast. Dennison: *Confirmed.* Kira: *Already done.* Voss: *About time.* Margot didn't send words. She sent a contract, formal and notarized, transferring her pack's alliance to my name.

I set the phone down. My hands were shaking.

*Breathe,* my wolf said.

I did.

Caden stood. "The Summit's in three days. He's going to be standing in an empty hall."

"I know."

"Good." He nodded once. "Call me when you're ready to move. Wherever you go, Ironwood's got your back."

He left. Rhys followed.

I sat in the booth for a long time after they were gone, staring at my phone, at the five confirmations that had just dismantled everything Grayson thought he owned.

Then I called Nora.

She answered on the first ring. Her voice was hoarse, like she'd been crying or hadn't slept. "Sophia."

"I need to ask you something," I said. "And I need you to answer honestly."

A pause. Then: "Go ahead."

"When you tested my bloodwork over the years—when you were checking why my wolf wasn't waking—did you ever test specifically for wolfsbane?"

The silence on the other end was so long I thought she'd hung up.

Then: "I tested for illness. I tested for deficiencies. I tested for everything I was trained to test for." Her voice cracked. "I was not asked to test for poisoning. And I should have asked myself."

I closed my eyes. "You're sure."

"I went back through your records last night," she said quietly. "I ran the old samples again. There are traces, Sophia. Consistent traces over years. Low enough to suppress without causing visible symptoms. High enough to keep a wolf dormant." She took a shaky breath. "I should have seen it. I didn't ask the right questions."

"Because you trusted him."

"Yes."

I opened my eyes. I looked out at the highway. "Will you testify to that?"

Another long pause. Then: "Yes."

I thanked her. I hung up.

My wolf was very still inside me. *He poisoned us for ten years.*

"I know," I said aloud.

*And now he's going to stand in an empty hall and realize what he's lost.*

I picked up my coffee. Still cold. I finished it anyway.

Three days later, Grayson stood at the head of an alliance hall arranged for thirty representatives. Catered tables. Formal seating. Ceremonial banners.

The hall was empty.

I wasn't there to see it. But Declan called me that night. He didn't say much. Just: "He stood there for twenty minutes. Megan kept checking her phone. No one came."

I didn't ask how he got my number. I just said, "Thank you."

He hung up.

I sat on the edge of a motel bed in a town I didn't know the name of, and I let myself smile.
