Chapter 4

My wolf sent the scent before I knew she was doing it.

I was sitting in a roadside motel three towns past neutral territory, going through the Iron Pact documentation for the fourth time, when I felt her shift inside my chest. Not restless. Deliberate. She was doing something, and she wasn't asking permission.

*What are you—*

*Announcing,* she said simply.

I felt it ripple outward. My scent—jasmine and frost, stronger now than it had ever been, carrying something underneath that I didn't have a name for yet. It moved like a wave I couldn't see, crossing boundaries I hadn't touched, reaching places I had never been.

*They need to know what we are,* my wolf said. *So they don't make the mistake he did.*

I set down the papers. My hands were steady, but my pulse wasn't. "Who's 'they'?"

She didn't answer. She didn't need to.

I packed my bag. I had a meeting scheduled with two of the Iron Pact Alphas in the morning—Dennison and Kira, neutral ground, a diner Caden had recommended because it had actual coffee and wasn't a gas station. I needed to finalize the territorial agreements before I took the next step. Before I went anywhere that required me to be more than just a woman with five alliances and a ledger.

I didn't sleep that night. My wolf was too awake.

The diner was the kind of place that had been remodeled once in 1987 and never again. Vinyl booths. Laminate tables. A jukebox in the corner that didn't work. Dennison and Kira were already there when I arrived, sitting across from each other in a booth near the back. Dennison stood when he saw me. Kira just nodded.

I slid into the seat beside Kira and opened my ledger.

"Ironwood's eastern boundary needs a buffer clause," I said without preamble. "If Shadowridge tries to expand after this collapses, you'll need legal grounds to block it."

Dennison leaned forward. "You think he'll try?"

"I think he'll be desperate." I turned the ledger toward him. "This clause ties your boundary to the original treaty language I negotiated ten years ago. If he contests it, he'll have to admit the treaty was never his work."

Kira made a low sound that might have been a laugh. "He won't admit that."

"No. But the Lycan Council will recognize the language. And they'll know who wrote it."

Dennison read the clause. He read it twice. Then he pulled out a pen and signed.

Kira was reaching for the ledger when the door opened.

I didn't look up immediately. I was focused on the page, on the next clause, on the work that had kept me sane for the past seventy-two hours. But my wolf went still.

Completely still.

Cedar and rain.

The scent hit me like a hand around my throat—not violent, not painful, just absolute. I knew that scent. I had known it once, years ago, in a different lifetime, and I had spent a decade trying to convince myself I'd imagined it.

I looked up.

Bryce Turner was standing in the doorway.

He looked exactly the way I remembered and nothing like it. Taller, maybe, or maybe I had just been smaller then. Dark hair, same jawline, same way of standing that didn't announce itself but didn't need to. He was wearing jeans and a jacket that looked expensive without trying. There was a woman beside him—sharp-eyed, dark-haired, watching me with the kind of attention that said *Beta*.

He looked at me. I looked at him.

My wolf said, very quietly: *Him.*

I forced my face smooth. I forced my voice steady. I turned back to Dennison and finished my sentence. "—and the buffer clause applies retroactively to any claims filed within the past five years."

Dennison was staring at the door. So was Kira.

Bryce walked toward the booth. Not fast. Not slow. Just steady, like he had all the time in the world and knew exactly where he was going. He stopped three feet away.

"You still have terrible taste in diners," he said.

His voice was the same. Low. Unhurried. The kind of voice that didn't need to be loud to fill a room.

I looked up at him. I kept my face blank. "I checked the nearest one. It's a gas station with a microwave."

Something flickered in his eyes. Amusement, maybe. Or recognition.

I turned back to Dennison. "Initial here. And here."

Dennison initialed. His hand was shaking slightly. Kira was still staring at Bryce like she was trying to place him and couldn't quite manage it.

Bryce didn't move. He just stood there, three feet away, waiting.

The woman beside him—his Beta—said quietly, "We can wait outside."

"No need," I said without looking up. "We're almost finished."

I went through the rest of the clauses. Kira signed. Dennison signed. I closed the ledger and stood.

Bryce was still there.

I met his eyes. Cedar and rain. My wolf was pressing against my ribs, not frantic, just insistent. *Look at him. Smell him. He's—*

"I'll be in touch," I said to Dennison.

He nodded. He and Kira left quickly, glancing back once before the door swung shut.

I picked up my ledger. I turned toward the door.

Bryce said, "Sophia."

I stopped.

I didn't turn around. I just stood there, ledger under my arm, three feet from the exit.

"I'm not here as a prince," he said quietly. "I'm here because your scent crossed my territory last night, and I've been carrying it for ten years without knowing why."

I turned.

He was looking at me the way you look at something you thought you'd lost and just found again. Not possessive. Not claiming. Just... certain.

"I know," I said.

His eyes widened slightly.

"I know you've been carrying it," I said. "I could smell it on you the day we met. Cedar and rain. I thought I imagined it."

"You didn't."

"No." I shifted the ledger to my other arm. "But I had a mate. And you were a Lycan Prince. So I convinced myself it was nothing."

He took a step closer. Just one. "And now?"

I looked at him. Really looked at him. My wolf was howling inside me, not in pain, not in fear, just in recognition so fierce it felt like breaking.

"Now," I said quietly, "I have a meeting at the Lycan Court in two days. And I'm not going as someone's lost daughter or someone's second-chance mate. I'm going as a political negotiator with five allied packs and a ledger full of treaties that prove I know exactly what I'm worth."

Bryce's mouth curved. Not a smile. Something quieter. "I know."

"Good," I said.

I walked past him. I made it to the door.

"Sophia," he said again.

I stopped. I didn't turn around.

"I'll see you there," he said.

I pushed the door open and walked out into the parking lot. My hands were shaking. My wolf was still howling.

*He's ours,* she said.

"I know," I whispered.

But I wasn't ready. Not yet.
