Chapter 2

I woke up human.

That surprised me. I had expected to find myself still in the forest, still silver-furred and enormous, still shaking with the kind of rage that doesn't fit inside a human ribcage. But I was on my back in the pine needles, naked, cold, and the sky above me was going pale at the edges. Dawn. My wolf was still there—I could feel her now, a steady weight behind my sternum, awake and waiting—but she had let me come back.

*We have work to do,* she said, and her voice in my head was calmer than mine had ever been.

I stood. My legs held. Everything hurt in the way that shifting for the first time hurts, like my bones had been taken apart and put back together by someone who didn't have the manual. I pulled on the spare clothes I kept in a hollow tree near the eastern trail—old jeans, a shirt that didn't fit right anymore, boots I'd left there two years ago in case of emergency. This counted.

I walked back toward the pack house.

The grounds were quiet. Most of the pack would still be inside, sleeping off the ceremony. The Autumn Moon was an all-night event, and Grayson had made sure there was enough wine and posturing to keep everyone occupied until well past midnight. I had left at 9:47. It was now just after six. That gave me a window.

I crossed the lawn. The altar stone was still there, torches burned down to stubs, my Luna sash gone—someone had already taken it, probably Megan, probably within minutes. I didn't look at it. I walked up the steps to the side entrance, the one that led to the kitchens and the lower quarters, and I used my key.

It still worked. Grayson hadn't thought to revoke it yet.

The hallway smelled like old grease and floor cleaner. This was where he'd moved me three months ago—Omega quarters, near the kitchens, a narrow room with a single window that faced the garbage bins. He'd called it temporary. He'd said the Luna suite needed renovations. I had believed him because I had spent ten years believing him, and it was only now, walking down that dim hallway with my wolf awake and furious inside me, that I understood how much I had swallowed.

I unlocked the door to my room.

It was small. Bed, desk, chair. I hadn't brought much down here because I kept thinking I'd be moving back up. The desk still had my ledger on it—a thick notebook, black cover, every page filled with my handwriting. Ten years of alliance meetings. Every territorial treaty I'd brokered. Every compromise I'd negotiated. Every Alpha I'd sat across from while Grayson signed the documents I'd prepared and accepted their thanks.

I picked it up. It was heavier than the sash had been.

There was one other thing. In the bottom drawer, under a stack of old sweaters I never wore, I found the letter. I had written it on the first anniversary of my wolf not waking. I was sixteen then. I had sealed it and told myself I'd open it when she finally came. I never had. I slipped it into my jacket pocket without reading it. That was for later.

I left the room. I left the key on the desk. I walked back down the hallway, ledger under my arm, and I did not look back.

In the main corridor, I stopped. I pulled out my phone. I had five calls to make.

The first was to Alpha Dennison of the Ironwood Pack. He answered on the second ring, his voice rough with sleep. "Sophia?"

"My allegiance to Shadowridge Pack ended last night," I said quietly. "The alliance you made ten years ago—the one where I sat across from you for six hours and renegotiated your northern boundary—was with me. Not with Grayson Hunter. If you want to honor it, you'll honor it with me. Alone."

There was a pause. Then: "Understood. Where do I send confirmation?"

"I'll let you know."

I hung up. I made the second call. Then the third. Then the fourth. Then the fifth. The script was the same. The responses were immediate. By the time I finished, the sun was fully up, and I had five Iron Pact Alphas who had just redirected their loyalty away from Shadowridge and toward a woman with no pack and no title.

I put my phone away. I turned toward the eastern trail.

Grayson was standing at the end of the corridor.

He looked like he'd dressed in a hurry—shirt half-tucked, no jacket, hair uncombed. He must have heard I was in the building. He must have come down expecting me to be packing, or crying, or begging. His face, when he saw me walking toward him with the ledger under my arm and my phone in my hand, went very still.

"Sophia," he said.

I kept walking. I was going to go past him. I was going to walk out the door and never say his name again.

But he stepped into my path.

"You have nowhere to go," he said, and his voice dropped into that Alpha tone—the one that used to make my knees weak, the one I used to hear as protection. "No pack. No wolf of standing. No leverage without my name behind you."

I stopped.

I looked at him. Really looked at him. He was composed. Clinical. This was the face of a man who had already done the math and decided I would fail. He expected me to come back. He expected me to realize, in a week or a month, that I had nothing without him.

I felt my wolf shift behind my ribs. Calm. Waiting.

"You kept a locked cabinet in your study," I said quietly. "Third shelf. The label is in your handwriting."

His face changed.

It wasn't much. Just a flicker—pupils widening, jaw tightening, the smallest hitch in his breath. But I saw it. I saw the fear.

I turned. I walked past him. I crossed the threshold, stepped onto the gravel path, and kept walking until I reached the eastern boundary line.

I stopped there. I looked back once.

Grayson was still standing in the doorway, watching me. He didn't follow.

I crossed the line.

The bond was gone. The mark was cold. But my wolf was awake, and I had five alliances in my pocket, and I knew exactly where I was going next.
