Chapter 3

I drove for three hours before I pulled over.

The rest stop was one of those in-between places — not pack territory, not human land, just a stretch of asphalt and flickering fluorescent lights where travelers could pretend, for a few minutes, that they belonged nowhere and that was fine. I parked under a broken streetlamp, cut the engine, and sat in the dark.

My chest still ached. Not the sharp, tearing pain of the rejection — that had dulled to a throb, like a bruise pressed too hard. But underneath it was something else. Something hollow.

I pulled the burner phone from my go-bag. Serena had mailed it to me three months ago, wrapped in plain brown paper with a note tucked inside: When you're ready.

I had hidden it in the cabin, under a loose floorboard near the fireplace. I told myself I would never use it. That the mate bond was sacred. That Brendan would see me eventually.

I turned the phone over in my hands. It was cheap plastic, the kind you bought at a convenience store and threw away after. No pack tracking. No registered number. Just a single contact saved under the letter S.

My wolf stirred, restless and awake in a way she had not been in years. She wanted to run. To shift and tear through the trees until her paws bled. But I could not do that yet. Not here. Not without knowing where I was going.

I dialed.

Serena answered on the first ring. Her voice came through low and steady, like she had been holding the phone in her hand, waiting. 'Tell me where you are. I'm sending someone now.'

My throat tightened. I had not cried at the ceremony. I had not cried when the bond snapped. But hearing Serena's voice — calm and certain and so completely unsurprised — made something crack open inside me.

'Route 47,' I said. My voice came out rough. 'The rest stop near the state line.'

'Stay in your car,' Serena said. 'Lock the doors. Two of my wolves will be there in forty minutes. They're good people, Alicia. You can trust them.'

I nodded, even though she could not see me. 'Okay.'

'And Alicia?' Her voice softened. 'You did the right thing.'

I ended the call before I could cry.

---

Brendan woke before dawn.

I did not know this firsthand, but I felt it — or rather, I felt him trying to reach me. The fated mate bond had always been a tether, invisible but constant, like a second pulse beneath my skin. For five years, it had kept me tethered to Silvercrest, to the cabin, to him. Even when I wanted to leave, my wolf would whimper and pull me back, because the bond told her that leaving meant dying.

Now, as I sat in the rest stop parking lot watching the sky lighten, I felt him tug on that tether.

It was not physical. It was deeper than that. A psychic pull, like someone calling your name from far away. Come back. You belong here. You are mine.

My wolf snarled.

I closed my eyes and imagined a wall. Brick by brick. Solid and high and mine. I had read once, in a book Serena lent me years ago, that rejected mates could shield themselves from the remnants of a broken bond if they were strong enough. I had not believed it then. I had thought the bond was unbreakable.

But I was not the same wolf I had been five years ago.

I built the wall higher.

The pull weakened. Not gone — I could still feel it, faint and insistent, like a hand pressed against glass — but muted. Distant.

My wolf settled, satisfied.

I opened my eyes. The sky was turning pink at the edges. Headlights swept across the parking lot, and a dark SUV pulled up beside me. Two wolves got out — a man and a woman, both wearing Moonveil colors. The woman knocked on my window, her expression calm.

I unlocked the door.

---

We crossed into Moonveil territory just after sunrise.

I did not see the boundary wards — they were invisible, woven into the land itself by generations of pack magic — but I felt them the moment we passed through. The air changed. It was subtle, like stepping from a cold room into a warm one, but unmistakable.

And then something else happened.

The pressure lifted.

I gasped. My hands flew to my chest, and for a wild, terrifying moment I thought the bond had snapped again, that something inside me had broken beyond repair.

But it was not breaking. It was opening.

Brendan's Alpha aura — the constant, suffocating weight that had pressed down on me for five years, muting my wolf, keeping her small and quiet and compliant — was gone. Not entirely. I could still feel the faint, distant pull of the bond. But the aura, the leash, the invisible command that had kept me curled inward like a fist — it could not reach me here.

My wolf surged.

She did not howl. She roared.

I gripped the door handle, my breath coming fast and shallow, as something huge and furious and mine unfolded inside me. My wolf lifted her head, stretched, shook herself free of years of forced dormancy. She was awake. Fully, blazingly awake.

The woman driving glanced at me in the rearview mirror. 'You okay back there?'

I nodded, even though I was shaking. 'Yeah. I'm okay.'

She smiled faintly. 'That's the wards. They keep outside Alphas from projecting into our territory. Your wolf's probably feeling it.'

'Yeah,' I said quietly. 'She is.'

I pressed my palm flat against my chest, feeling my wolf's heartbeat — strong and steady and furious and alive. I had forgotten what it felt like to be whole.

Ahead, through the windshield, I could see the first buildings of Moonveil town rising against the dawn. Somewhere in that town, Serena was waiting.

I closed my eyes and let my wolf breathe.
