Chapter 3

He came to find me the next morning.

Not Dashiell. Not Maren. The King himself.

I was sitting upright in the guest quarters when the knock came—one knock, unhurried, the kind that doesn't need an answer because the person on the other side has already decided to enter. He opened the door and stopped in the frame. He didn't come in.

I had seen the Lycan King once before, years ago, at a regional summit I had attended as Carter's unnamed assistant. I remembered thinking he looked like something carved from a mountain—large, silver-haired, with an aura so dense and old it felt like standing near the edge of something. I remembered keeping my eyes down.

Now he looked at me, and I made myself look back.

He didn't speak right away. He stood there and breathed once, slowly, and something moved across his face that I didn't have language for. It wasn't pity. It wasn't the careful assessment I'd expected. It was something private and enormous, the way grief looks when it finally finds what it's been searching for and doesn't know what to do with its own hands.

I pressed my fingers to the scar on my neck without thinking.

He noticed. His eyes dropped to the gesture and came back up, and whatever was in his expression deepened.

"You are safe here," he said. His voice was low. Final, the way stone is final. "You are under my protection. That will not change."

He asked nothing. He didn't explain why. He just let the words sit in the room like something solid I could put weight on if I needed to.

Then he stepped back and pulled the door closed.

I heard him in the corridor, and I heard Dashiell's voice, quiet and even.

"How long have you known?"

A pause.

"I knew she was mine," Dashiell said. "I did not know she was yours."

Silence. Then the King's footsteps, moving away, and his voice carrying one instruction back to someone I couldn't see.

Maren. Bloodline tests. Immediately.

I sat with my hand still pressed against my neck and stared at the closed door for a long time.

---

Two days later, Maren cleared me to leave the estate for an hour. Fresh air, she said, in the tone healers use when they mean *you are starting to look like the walls*.

The escort was three Silvercrest wolves, quiet and unobtrusive, and they brought me to a small café at the pack border—the kind of neutral territory that exists in the seam between pack lands, where the coffee is mediocre and no one asks questions. I sat by the window with both hands around a cup and let the ordinary sounds of it settle over me.

I didn't hear her come in. I smelled her first.

Expensive perfume over something colder. The same scent from the hall.

Yasmin Castro sat down across from me without being invited. She was immaculate—hair smooth, Luna ceremonial pin at her collar, the kind of composed that takes preparation. She looked like she had rehearsed this on the drive over.

She let me look at her for a moment. Then she tilted her head and let me see Carter's mark on her neck. Deliberate. Slow.

"I wanted to check on you," she said warmly. "After everything."

I didn't say anything.

She smiled and told me about the ceremony. The flowers, the vows, the way the hall had looked when she walked in. She described Carter's hand on her back. She mentioned the pregnancy almost as an aside, casual, like she was sharing good news with an old friend, and she watched my face the whole time.

Waiting for the crack.

I looked at her. The mark on her neck. The pin at her collar. The careful architecture of everything she had built and was now displaying like a weapon.

I thought about Carter in his pack house, shifting slower every morning. I thought about the twelve warriors who had lowered their eyes and gone home.

"The bond you're wearing," I said, "was stolen goods from a man whose wolf is already weakening." My voice came out flat and clean. "Worry less about me. Worry more about whether Carter's fading wolf can protect his own pack—let alone a pup."

The smile didn't fall all at once. It went the way ice goes—a small fracture, then stillness, then the whole surface wrong.

She stood. Smoothed her jacket. Said nothing.

I watched her walk out through the glass, back straight, chin up, every inch the Luna she had worked so hard to become. I watched until she got into the car and the door closed and the car pulled away.

Then I picked up my coffee and finished it.

It was cold. I didn't care.

Somewhere back at Ironveil, Carter was unraveling by degrees, and the woman who had just sat across from me was going home to pull on the loose threads. I almost felt something for her.

Almost.
