Chapter 4

Maren delivered the results on a Tuesday morning, and I wasn't invited to the meeting.

I knew it was happening. I could hear the low murmur of voices through the corridor wall—Maren's careful healer's cadence, the King's silence between her sentences, and Dashiell's voice, quieter than both, asking something I couldn't make out. I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my fingers to the fading scar on my neck and waited.

Maren found me an hour later. She sat across from me and folded her hands and told me the tests were inconclusive.

Not negative. Inconclusive.

She explained it carefully, the way she explained everything—like she was building a structure word by word and wanted to make sure each piece was load-bearing before she set the next one down. My Lycan wolf was so deeply suppressed that its genetic markers were partially masked. The bloodline was there, she believed. But the tests could not confirm it in isolation. Confirmation required the wolf's emergence.

"And if the wolf doesn't emerge?" I asked.

Maren looked at me steadily. "It will."

She said it the way you say something you have already decided is true, and then she left.

I sat with the word *inconclusive* for a long time after that.

---

Two weeks into Silvercrest, I asked Dashiell to walk the grounds with me.

I don't know exactly why I asked him and not Maren. Maybe because Maren looked at me like a patient and Dashiell looked at me like—I didn't have a word for it. Like something that had been waiting a long time to look.

I set the pace. Slow. He matched it without comment.

I asked about the estate's structure first—how many warriors, how the border rotations worked, who reported to whom. He answered everything without evasion, without the slight pause that people use when they're deciding how much to tell you. Just clean, direct information, and then silence, and then whatever I asked next.

I asked about the Lycan Court's hierarchy. He explained it. I asked about the King's governance, the Council's authority, the difference between Lycan law and Alpha pack law. He explained that too.

We reached the far edge of the grounds where the manicured grass gave way to tree line. The forest was dark and dense and smelled like pine and cold earth. I stopped at the edge of it.

I pressed two fingers to my neck without thinking.

The scar was fainter than it had been a week ago. Still there. Still cold. But fainter, like a word being slowly erased.

Dashiell stood beside me and said nothing. He wasn't looking at the forest. I felt him not looking at my hand.

"Did you know?" I asked. "About my bloodline. When you came to Ironveil."

A pause. Not the kind that means hesitation. The kind that means he's giving the question the weight it deserves.

"No," he said. "I came because you were mine. The bloodline is the Moon Goddess's answer to a question I didn't know to ask."

I turned that over. Set it down somewhere I could look at it later.

We walked back in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable. That was the part I kept returning to that evening—that the silence had not been uncomfortable.

I left my door open when I went to bed. Just a gap. I told myself it was for the air.

---

The question I'd been circling finally came out three nights later.

We were in the small sitting room off the main corridor, the one with the low lamp and the window that looked out over the north grounds. I had a book I wasn't reading. Dashiell was across from me, doing nothing in particular, which I had noticed was something he was very good at—being present without demanding anything from the space.

"How long were you there?" I asked. "In Ironveil. How long did you know?"

He told me everything.

The summit. The moment he caught my scent and understood what it meant. The discovery of Carter's mark already in place, already blocking the bond that should have been his. The decision to bury his title, construct the Beta identity, suppress his Lycan aura down to nothing. Three years at Carter's right hand.

He didn't tell it like a plea. He didn't tell it like a confession. He told it like a report—factual, sequential, without reaching for my reaction. It was somehow worse than if he had reached. It meant he was telling me because I deserved to know, not because he needed me to feel something about it.

I listened without moving.

When he finished, the lamp flickered once. Outside, the wind moved through the north grounds.

"Why didn't you fight Carter for me?" I asked.

He looked at me directly. "Because a war between a Lycan Prince and an Alpha, with you secretly marked at the center of it, would have destroyed you before it saved you." A beat. "I chose to wait for the bond to break rather than break you along with it."

I sat with that.

Then I stood, and I walked to my room, and I closed the door.

I stood on the other side of it with my back against the wood and my eyes closed and my hand pressed flat against my sternum, where the hollow place had lived for two weeks.

An hour later, his scent drifted under the door. Cedar and ozone and the particular stillness before a storm breaks.

I didn't move away from it.
