Chapter 2

I slept in three-hour pieces.

The Silvercrest guest quarters were warm and clean and smelled like cedar and stone, and none of that helped. Every time I dropped below the surface, the bond-scar woke me back up. Not pain exactly. More like the memory of pain, replaying in the nerve endings where the mark used to live, as if my body hadn't received the news yet.

Carter's imprint was dissolving. I could feel it going. That was the worst part—feeling it leave piece by piece, like a tooth being pulled slowly, over days, without anything to numb it.

On the third night, I stopped trying to sleep.

I lay on my back and stared at the ceiling and pressed two fingers against the scar on my neck and told myself it was fine. That I was fine. That the hollow place under my ribs was just biology, just chemistry, just the bond-chemistry unwinding, and it would stop eventually and I would be fine.

Then the ghost-pain hit.

It came from nowhere—a white-hot streak from the scar all the way down through my chest, like a silver wire pulled taut and snapped. I heard myself cry out before I knew I was doing it. My back came off the mattress. My hands clawed the sheets. The second wave was worse than the first, and the third worse than the second, and I was making sounds I didn't recognize, small and broken, and I could not make them stop.

The door opened.

Not Maren. I registered that first—the step was too heavy, too certain.

And then his scent hit me, and something inside my chest went very still.

Cedar. Wet cedar and ozone. The smell of the air right before lightning.

The pain was still there. But through it, underneath it, something else moved. Something small and barely alive, like an ember that had been sitting cold for a long time and had just felt the first breath of air.

My wolf.

She stirred. Just once. Just barely. But she stirred.

I stared at him from the bed with tears I hadn't known I was crying still wet on my face. He stood in the doorframe—he hadn't crossed the threshold—and the amber in his eyes was very bright in the dark.

I didn't understand it. Three years. Three years of standing three feet from this man in Carter's meetings, handing him files, exchanging exactly the number of words required and not one more. Three years and I had never once—

"Why do you smell like that?" I whispered.

He went completely still. The kind of still that isn't stillness at all but something held back with both hands.

"Because the Moon Goddess paired us," he said. His voice was quiet. Absolute. "She always did."

I flinched. I turned my face toward the wall before I could stop myself, and I felt him register it—felt the slight change in the air, the way he absorbed it without moving.

He did not come closer.

A minute passed. Maybe two. The phantom pain had faded to a low, dull ache, the way it always did after a wave broke.

"Go back to sleep," he said finally. Not a command. Something softer than that.

I heard him pull the door almost closed. Not all the way. He left a gap, and through it, faintly, I could still catch the edge of his scent.

I did not sleep. But I stopped shaking.

---

By morning, word had reached us that Carter was calling it a theft.

Maren told me over tea, her voice careful and even, the way healers learn to deliver bad news. Carter had convened an emergency pack meeting. He was telling his wolves—and, through them, every allied pack in the region—that Dashiell had stolen sensitive Ironveil administrative records. That I had taken them. That this was a matter of pack security and not, not at all, the thing that everyone in that hall had watched happen with their own eyes.

I wrapped both hands around the cup and said nothing.

Silas was assembling a retrieval squad. Twelve warriors. The official request was already circulating.

I thought about Silas's hand on my arm in the hall. The way he'd said *Alpha wants you at the front* like it was a routine errand. I wondered if he'd hesitated, even once, before he started selecting names.

I already knew the answer.

They arrived at the Silvercrest border that afternoon.

I didn't see it happen. I heard it from Maren, who heard it from the border guard, who described it in the flat, slightly awed tone of someone reporting something they were still processing.

The twelve warriors had come with their official claim and their Alpha's authority behind them. They had not expected to be met by the Lycan King.

He had come down to the border himself. Flanked by the royal guard, unhurried, as if he had all the time in the world and the concept of urgency belonged to smaller creatures. And then the wind had shifted.

Maren paused there. Set down her cup.

"He went still," she said. "The King. The border guard said he just—stopped. For almost a full minute. No one moved."

I pressed my fingers to my neck without thinking.

"Then he spoke," she said. "He told them you were under Lycan Crown protection."

The words landed slowly, like stones dropped into deep water.

"Carter's warriors," I said. "What did they do?"

Maren looked at me. Something careful and wondering moved through her expression.

"They lowered their eyes," she said. "And they went home."

I sat with that for a long moment. Outside, the Silvercrest estate was quiet, the afternoon light falling pale and clean across the stone.

Somewhere, the message was already spreading. Every pack in the region would know by sundown.

I thought about Carter in his pack house, receiving that news. I thought about what his face would do.

I pressed my fingers harder against the cold scar and felt, for the first time in three days, something that wasn't grief.

I didn't have a name for it yet. But it was there.
