Chapter 4

Dorian showed up on a Tuesday with a message he didn't need to deliver in person.

"Theron wants tonic inventory by Friday," he said, standing at the bottom of my porch steps like he'd stop there forever if I let him. "For the banquet stores."

"You could have sent that with anyone."

"I could have."

He didn't explain himself further. Barnaby was on the porch behind me, half-risen, ears back, watching the stranger the way he watched every stranger — like a held breath.

Dorian didn't look at him and ask permission. He didn't call him over, didn't crouch and coo the way people do when they want a dog to like them fast. He just lowered himself down into the grass, cross-legged, a good ten feet from the steps, and went still.

I'd seen this before. I'd done this before.

He wasn't performing patience. He had it.

Minutes passed. Barnaby lay back down, chin on his paws, eyes tracking. Dorian looked at the tree line, at his own hands, anywhere but directly at the dog. The afternoon light moved through the pines. Somewhere a woodpecker worked at a dead trunk in slow, patient knocks.

Twenty minutes. I counted them by the shifting shadow of the porch post.

Then Barnaby stood, and crossed the whole distance himself — slow, low, stopping twice to reconsider — until his nose was an inch from Dorian's open palm.

Dorian didn't move his hand toward him. He let Barnaby come the rest of the way.

The sniff lasted three seconds. Then Barnaby sat, right there in the grass, close enough that his shoulder brushed Dorian's knee.

Something in my chest turned over, slow and unwilling, like a key in a lock that hadn't been used in a long time.

I didn't say anything. I went back inside before either of them could see my face doing something I hadn't given it permission to do.

That evening, when Dorian knocked and asked if he could sit a while, I didn't tell him to leave.

We sat on opposite ends of the porch. He talked about a lowland cultivar that didn't take well to frost. I told him a story about a healer in Shadowmere who used to burn incense to cover the smell of failed tonics. He laughed — a short, real sound, not performed for me. Barnaby lay between us, head on his paws, and for two hours nothing was asked of me and nothing was taken.

It was the closest thing to peace I'd felt since the fire went out on my old life.

I hated how much I noticed that.

---

That night, lying in bed with the window cracked, I caught his scent still hanging faint in the air — cedar, woodsmoke, that electric undercurrent I couldn't name — and something inside me lifted its head.

Not fully. Not a voice. Just pressure, low and insistent, like a shoulder against a locked door.

I pressed my fingers to the cold scar on my neck. Nothing there answered. There was never anything there to answer anymore.

"Phantom," I said out loud, to no one. "That's all."

I didn't sleep much.

In the morning, Mavis came without her canvas bag, which should have told me something was different before she said a word.

"You look terrible," she said, sitting at my table.

"I didn't sleep."

"Because of Dorian."

I didn't answer that directly. I felt the words rising before I could stop them. "I'm not doing this again, Mavis."

She went still.

"I built myself into a shape that fit someone else's needs for three years," I said. My voice was low, but it wasn't calm — I could hear the edge in it, the thing I usually kept buried. "I brewed his tonics and ran his house and told myself devotion was the same as being loved. I will not do that again. Not for him. Not for anyone. I don't care what my body does when he's near. I am not going to disappear into another bond and call it romance."

Mavis didn't argue. She didn't defend him. She just reached over and put her hand flat on the table, near mine, not touching.

"Okay," she said quietly.

That was all. She stayed another hour, and we didn't speak of it again.

She was almost to her car when a young sentinel came jogging up the path, breathless, scanning the yard until he found Dorian, who'd arrived not ten minutes earlier to return a borrowed knife.

"Theron needs you," the sentinel said. "Border wolves let a party through. Alpha and escort. Didn't request passage first."

Dorian's face didn't change much. But something behind it went very still, the way a lake goes still right before weather.

"Which pack," he said.

The sentinel hesitated, glancing at me before he answered, like he already understood the name meant something in this yard.

"Shadowmere."

Dorian was already moving before the word finished leaving the boy's mouth. He didn't explain. He didn't look back at me.

I stood on the porch with the knife still in his hand, forgotten, and felt the ground under my feet go strange and unsteady, like something old and cold reaching back across the miles to find me.
