Now she must face the wreckage of a bond she never chose to lose—and the wolf inside her who refuses to stay silent.

Chapter 5

He came to my door before Theron's wolves could get to him.

I knew who it was before I opened it. Not by scent — my wolf had gone silent again the moment his boots hit the porch, silent in the particular way she used to go silent every time he raised his voice in a room I was standing in — but by the way the wood of the door itself seemed to press cold against my palm.

I opened it anyway. I would not be the woman who hid behind a latch.

Hudson stood on my porch in a coat that used to fit him better.

That was the first thing I noticed. His shoulders were the same, and the jaw was the same, and the pale winter light did what winter light always did to his hair. But the coat hung wrong. Something under it had gone smaller. His skin had a grayness to it that a man with a healthy wolf does not have.

His eyes moved over my face like a man checking a wound for how much of it was still bleeding.

"Eloise," he said.

My name in his mouth did nothing to me. I noted that with a distant, clinical kind of interest. Three years I had waited to hear him say it a certain way, and now I heard him say it and it landed on nothing.

"I was wrong," he said.

His voice cracked on the second word. Not from emotion. From strain. His Alpha tone was trying to hold itself together and slipping through the seams.

"The bond can be restored." He took a step forward. Stopped when I did not move. "Eloise. Listen. I've — the healer said — there are rites. There are ways. If both parties consent, the mark can be re-established. I've read every text in Shadowmere's library. It's possible."

I watched him.

He swallowed. His hands opened and closed at his sides.

"I love you," he said.

The word came out of him like a coin someone had never used before and did not quite know the value of. It sat in the air between us. I could smell what was under it — the desperation, the dulling, the wolf-weakness he was trying to hide under aftershave and posture.

Somewhere behind me in the cabin, Barnaby made a small sound. Not a growl. A tightening. He remembered the shape of a raised voice even when the voice had not been raised yet.

I stepped back into the doorway. I kept my hand on the knob.

"Eloise," Hudson said again, and this time there was something raw in it. "Say something."

I said nothing.

I closed the door.

I did not slam it. I did not need to. I turned the latch with two fingers and let the small click of it be the entire answer.

On the other side of the wood, he did not knock again. I heard his breath, uneven, close to the door. I heard him say my name one more time, quieter, to the grain of the wood. Then I heard boots move off the porch, and then nothing, and then, a long minute later, wolves — Theron's — moving through the pines to escort him out of the perimeter he had crossed without permission.

I stood in my kitchen with my hand still on the latch until Barnaby crossed the room and pressed his head against my knee.

I let out a breath I had not known I was holding.

My fingers found the scar on my neck. Cold. Still cold. Always cold.

"Good," I said, to no one. "Good."

---

Mavis came the next morning with her face set in a way I had learned to read.

"He's still in the territory," she said, before she'd even sat down. "Theron didn't expel him. Diplomatic reasons. He's staying at an inn on the western edge, and he's been asking questions about the banquet."

"The banquet."

"Theron's calling a bigger one. Alliance formalization. Rogue threat has the neighboring Alphas nervous. Half the region is going to be in that hall." She looked at me steadily. "Hudson's already told Braelyn he's going. He thinks the crowd will help him."

Something in me moved.

Not fear. Not grief. Something older, low in the belly, a heat that had no business being there in a woman without a wolf. The locked-door presence at the back of my mind pushed once, hard, and settled.

I stood very still and let it settle.

"He wants a stage," I said.

"He wants a stage," Mavis agreed.

I walked to the window. The pines were black against a white sky. Somewhere out past them, in a rented room he had never earned, Hudson was rehearsing the shape of a public apology and calculating which of my old instincts would still make me flinch.

He did not know what I had been building in the quiet.

"I'll go," I said.

Mavis went very still behind me. "Eloise."

"I'll go to the banquet."

"Why."

I turned around. My voice, when it came out, was perfectly level. I heard it the way you hear something someone else is saying.

"Because he came here to use an audience," I said. "I intend to use it first."

Mavis did not smile. She did not argue. She looked at me for a long moment with something in her eyes I could not entirely place — pride, maybe, and something underneath it that looked almost like recognition.

"All right," she said quietly.

She left me to it.

That afternoon I sat at my kitchen table with a fresh notebook and a pen that did not shake in my hand. I opened to the first blank page. I wrote a date across the top — three years ago, the first tea I had ever brewed for him, the first symptom I had catalogued without understanding what I was seeing.

And I began, dosage by dosage, symptom by symptom, staged crisis by staged crisis, to write it all down.
