Chapter 3

The den smelled like rot and old rain.

It was barely a den at all—just a collapsed overhang of rock with enough clearance underneath to keep the wind off our backs. The floor was dirt and moss. The ceiling dripped. But it was two miles past the Ironveil border and nobody had followed us, so it was the best place in the world.

I sat with my back against the stone and took inventory.

One vial, half-empty. Wolfsbane antidote. The label was still legible in the dim pre-dawn light filtering through the trees.

Two sets of clothes. Mine didn't fit. His were torn at the shoulder where the enforcer had grabbed him.

No food. No weapons. No fire.

And my entire seven-year education in Ironveil's infrastructure, which was worth more than all of it.

Jaiden sat across from me with his broken hand cradled in his lap. I'd wrapped it in a strip of cloth torn from the bottom of my shirt. The fabric was already soaked through with something that wasn't quite blood—darker, thicker, the way silver burns wept when they went deep.

He hadn't made a sound since we crossed the border.

I watched him in the growing light. Watched the way he breathed—steady, controlled, like he was counting each inhale. Watched the set of his shoulders, the angle of his spine. He wasn't performing toughness. He was just enduring.

"Do you have a direction in mind?"

His voice startled me. Not because it was loud. Because it was the first thing either of us had said in an hour and he sounded genuinely curious, like we were planning a trip to the market instead of sitting in a cave with nothing.

I looked at him.

"West," I said.

"Why west?"

"Because it's away."

He nodded once. "Fine."

That was the entire negotiation.

He leaned his head back against the rock and closed his eyes. I stayed where I was, facing the entrance, my back to the stone. Old reflex. In the tunnels you never sat with your back to a passage. You always kept the way out in your line of sight.

I didn't sleep.

Neither did he, I don't think. But we rested. And when the sun came up full and the forest started moving with daylight sounds, we got up and kept walking.

Two weeks.

That's how long it took for me to stop waiting for him to ask for something.

He didn't thank me. Didn't apologize for slowing me down. Didn't perform gratitude or try to prove he was worth the risk I'd taken. He just moved.

With one functional hand, he tracked a rabbit through underbrush so thick I lost sight of it three times. He found water by watching where the birds flew at dawn. He built a shelter out of fallen branches that kept us dry through a storm that turned the ground to mud. He scouted the ridge lines every morning before we moved, looking for smoke or movement or the kind of paths that meant other wolves had been through recently.

And he never once positioned himself between me and an exit.

I noticed that on day four. We'd stopped to rest in a clearing and he sat down on the opposite side, his back to a tree, leaving the open ground between us. When I shifted closer to the tree line, he didn't follow. He just adjusted his angle so he could still see me without crowding.

In the tunnels, the guards always stood in the doorways. Always blocked the path out. It was the first thing they did when they entered a room.

Jaiden left me the out.

I didn't say anything about it. But I stopped checking over my shoulder quite as often when he was behind me.

The rogue band found us at a creek crossing on day sixteen.

Six wolves. No pack marks, but they moved like they'd been together a while. Coordinated. The leader was a big man with a scar across his throat and a voice that sounded like gravel in a bucket.

"This is our territory," he said. "You submit to our authority or we take you by force."

Jaiden's injured hand was still wrapped. Limited. I saw him shift his weight, calculating angles, but six against two with one of us half-crippled wasn't a fight we'd win.

I stepped forward.

The leader's eyes tracked me. Dismissed me. Looked past me to Jaiden like I was decoration.

I looked at the mark on his forearm. Faded. Old. But I knew it.

Ironveil Delta. Supply rotation. He'd been one of the wolves who unloaded the grain shipments every third week. I'd scrubbed the storage floors after him for two years.

"You're out of Ironveil," I said. Quiet. Calm. "Left about four years ago. Took the northern route out, which means you didn't want them tracking you, which means you did something that would make them look."

His eyes snapped back to me. Narrowed.

"Your current den is a mile east of here. Old quarry site. Good cover, bad drainage. The east wall has a crack in the stone that runs all the way to the foundation. One hard rain and the whole thing shifts."

I let that sit for a second.

"I could tell the nearest pack's enforcers exactly where to find you. Exactly where to hit. Or—" I met his eyes. "You could let us pass. And I never mention I saw you."

Silence.

The creek ran over the stones. Somewhere in the trees a bird called.

The leader stared at me for a long time. Then he stepped aside.

"Go."

We went.

Jaiden didn't speak until we were a half mile clear and the forest had swallowed the creek behind us. Then he looked at me, his expression unreadable.

"How did you know?"

"I paid attention," I said.

He nodded slowly. Didn't press. Didn't ask what that meant or how long I'd been paying attention or what else I knew.

He just accepted it.

We kept walking west.

And for the first time since the brand, since the tunnels, since the courtyard where my wolf died under silver, I felt something that wasn't emptiness.

I felt possibility.
