Chapter 4

Three months into rogue territory and I still woke up checking for tunnel ceilings.

The sky above our camp was open. Wide. Too much space. My body didn't trust it yet. Every morning I opened my eyes expecting stone and darkness and the smell of wolfsbane in gray stew, and every morning I had to relearn where I was.

Jaiden was already awake. He usually was. I found him crouched beside the fire pit, feeding small sticks into the coals. His right hand—the one the enforcer had crushed—moved carefully, deliberately. The silver scars had healed into white lines across his knuckles. He couldn't make a full fist anymore. He never complained about it.

I sat down across from him and pulled my coat tighter. The coastal air was different from Ironveil. Wetter. Salt in everything.

"We need to mark the northern boundary," he said without looking up. "There's a ridge line that overlooks the valley. Good vantage point. If anyone's tracking through, we'll see them before they see us."

I nodded. "I'll scout it this afternoon."

"I'll come with you."

It wasn't a question, but it wasn't a command either. Just a statement. The way he said most things.

We finished the fire in silence. Ate the last of the dried meat we'd traded for two days ago. Then we walked.

The ridge was an hour north through dense forest. The ground climbed steadily, roots and rocks making the path uneven. Jaiden moved quietly for someone his size. I'd noticed that early on. He didn't crash through underbrush or snap branches. He placed his feet like he was thinking three steps ahead.

When we reached the ridge, he knelt and pulled out the rough map we'd been building. It wasn't much—just scratches in a piece of bark, lines marking water sources and den sites and the territories of other rogue bands we'd encountered. But it was ours.

He spread it on the ground between us and traced the northern edge with one finger.

"If we extend the boundary here," he said, leaning closer, "we get access to the creek. Fresh water year-round. But it puts us closer to the band that tried to claim us at the crossing."

I crouched beside him to see the map better. He shifted slightly to make room. Our shoulders were maybe six inches apart.

That's when I smelled it.

Not the forest. Not the salt air. Him.

Something warm and layered. Musk and cedar and something underneath I didn't have a word for. It wasn't cologne. It wasn't sweat. It was just—him. The way a person smells when you get close enough that the air between you carries their heat.

And beneath my ribs, in the cold empty place where my wolf used to be, something moved.

Not woke. Not surfaced. Just—pressed. Like a hand against the inside of my chest. Testing. Reaching.

My breath stopped.

The wolfsbane had been fading for weeks. I'd known that. Felt it in the way my senses sharpened, the way I could track scents I hadn't noticed before. But this was different. This was her. My wolf. The one Sawyer's silver had driven into silence seven years ago.

She was still there.

And she recognized something.

Panic hit me like cold water. I stood up fast—too fast—and put two feet of distance between us before I could think about why.

Jaiden looked up. His expression didn't change, but I saw his jaw tighten. Saw his scarred right hand curl into the closest thing to a fist it could still make.

He didn't ask. Didn't say a word.

I stared at the map. At the lines. At anything except him.

"The creek's worth the risk," I said. My voice came out flat. Steady. Good. "We mark the boundary there."

"Understood."

He folded the bark carefully and stood. Didn't step closer. Didn't crowd me. Just turned and started back down the ridge.

I followed.

The tremor in my chest faded as we walked. The distance helped. The movement helped. By the time we reached camp, the cold empty place was cold and empty again, and I could breathe without counting.

But I didn't forget it.

That night I lay in my shelter—just a lean-to made of branches and canvas—and stared at the dark.

The bond with Sawyer had felt like drowning. Like something closing around my throat. The recognition had been immediate and overwhelming and I'd thought that's what the Moon Goddess's gift was supposed to feel like. A tide you couldn't fight.

This tremor—this faint press of my wolf reaching toward Jaiden's scent—felt nothing like that.

It felt like a question I wasn't ready to answer.

I rolled onto my side and pulled the thin blanket up to my chin. Across the clearing, I could see the glow of Jaiden's fire through the gaps in his shelter. He was still awake. I could tell by the way the shadows moved.

He hadn't asked why I'd stepped back. Hadn't pushed. Hadn't tried to close the distance I'd put between us.

In the tunnels, the guards always pushed. Always tested. Always took the space you tried to keep.

Jaiden left me the space.

I closed my eyes and made myself sleep.

Two days later, she found us.

I smelled her before I saw her—unwashed skin, old fear, and underneath it the faint bitter edge of wolfsbane. Not fresh. Residual. The kind that clung to you long after the doses stopped.

I stood up from the fire and looked toward the tree line.

She stepped out slowly. Hands visible. No weapons. A woman, maybe thirty, with dark hair pulled back in a knot and eyes that tracked everything.

"I'm not here to fight," she said. Her voice was rough, like she didn't use it much.

Jaiden moved to my left. Not in front of me. Beside me. His weight balanced. Ready.

I looked at her for a long moment.

"How long have you been following us?"

"Three days."

"Why?"

"Wanted to see if you were the kind of rogues who'd kill me for sport or the kind who might let me stay."

I studied her face. The way she stood. The particular stillness of someone who'd survived by being underestimated.

"What's your name?"

"Nora Vance."

"What pack?"

"Don't have one. Don't have a wolf either. Lost her when I was sixteen. Pack called me defective and threw me out."

She said it without self-pity. Just fact.

I knew that tone.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"Not to be anyone's Omega again," she said. "And a place to sleep where I don't have to keep one eye open."

I looked at Jaiden. He met my eyes. Didn't speak. Didn't need to. He'd follow my call.

I turned back to Nora.

"There's a ridge line a mile north. I need to know what's on the other side. Terrain, water sources, signs of other wolves. Bring me a full report by sunset."

She blinked. "That's it?"

"That's it."

She stared at me for three seconds. Then she nodded once and disappeared back into the trees.

Jaiden watched her go. Then he looked at me.

"You're building something," he said quietly.

I looked at the fire. At the camp we'd scraped together out of nothing.

"Maybe," I said.

Nora came back at sunset with a full report. I gave her a perimeter to patrol and told her what to bring back next time.

She did it.

And the Silvercrest Coalition began.
