Chapter 3

The café sat on the edge of Pinecrest's main street, tucked between a bookstore and a hardware shop. I'd been going there every morning for three weeks. Same time. Same order. Black coffee, no sugar, no cream.

The barista knew me by sight now. She had my cup ready before I reached the counter. I paid, nodded my thanks, and turned toward the door.

Then the scent hit me.

Pine and rain. Clean and steady, like a forest after a storm.

Ember stirred. Not the restless, aching stir I'd grown used to in the dark hours. This was different. Warmer. Curious.

I stopped mid-step and looked up.

Hunter Clark stood at the counter, watching me with an expression I couldn't quite name. Recognition, maybe. Or relief. Like he'd been handed something he'd accepted he would never hold.

"Alina," he said quietly.

I blinked. "Hunter."

We'd known each other in college. He'd been the friend who showed up reliably. Coffee runs. Study sessions. The kind of steady presence you didn't notice until it wasn't there anymore. When I'd started orbiting Everett's world, Hunter had faded into the background. I'd stopped returning his calls. He'd stopped making them.

I hadn't thought about him in years.

"You're in Pinecrest," he said. Not a question. Just a statement, like he was confirming something he already knew.

"I am." I shifted my coffee cup to my other hand. "You're Beta here?"

"Yeah." He smiled, and it was the same quiet smile I remembered. "Been here a few years now."

Silence settled between us. Not uncomfortable, exactly. Just... heavy with things neither of us was saying.

Ember paced inside me, her attention fixed on him. On his scent. Pine and rain. It wrapped around me, gentle and unhurried, and for the first time since I'd left Shadowcrest, my wolf's restlessness eased.

"Can I buy you another coffee?" Hunter asked.

I looked down at the cup in my hand. "I already have one."

"Then can I sit with you while you drink it?"

I should have said no. I should have walked out, gone back to my cottage, kept my distance. Love that showed up without a fight had to be worth nothing. That was the lesson I'd learned. That was the truth I'd lived.

But Ember was quiet for the first time in weeks, and I was so tired of fighting my own instincts.

"Okay," I said.

We sat by the window. Hunter didn't fill the silence with small talk. He didn't ask where I'd been or why I'd left Shadowcrest or what had brought me to Pinecrest. He just sat across from me, drinking his coffee, letting me breathe.

I watched the street outside. A few pack members walked past. A car pulled into the hardware store parking lot. Normal, quiet life.

"I thought about you," Hunter said finally. "Over the years. Wondered how you were doing."

I glanced at him. "You could have called."

"I did. A few times." His voice was even, no accusation in it. "You stopped answering. I figured you had your reasons."

Guilt pricked at me. I had stopped answering. I'd been so consumed by Everett's cedar-and-smoke scent, so convinced the mate bond was destiny, that I'd let everything else fall away.

"I'm sorry," I said quietly.

Hunter shook his head. "You don't owe me an apology. I just... I'm glad you're here now."

Ember's ears perked. I felt her attention sharpen.

"Hunter," I started, then stopped. I didn't know what I wanted to say.

He waited. Patient. Unhurried.

Finally, I said, "I'm not looking for anything complicated."

"I know." He set his coffee cup down. "But I need to tell you something. And you can do whatever you want with it."

I braced myself. Ember went still.

"I've had feelings for you since college," Hunter said. "Six years. I never said anything because you were with him, and I wasn't going to be the guy who made things harder for you. But you're here now. And I'm here. And I'd like to try."

My chest tightened. "Try what?"

"A courtship. Three months. No pressure. If at the end of it you don't feel anything, we stay friends. But if you do..." He trailed off, leaving the rest unspoken.

I stared at him. Six years. He'd carried this for six years and never weaponized it. Never used it to guilt me or corner me or make me feel like I owed him something.

Love that costs nothing must be worth nothing.

But maybe that wasn't true. Maybe I'd just learned the wrong lesson.

"Three months," I repeated.

"Three months," he confirmed. "And if you want me to leave you alone before then, I will. No questions."

Ember stirred again, warmer this time. Her voice was soft in my mind. *He smells like safety.*

I took a breath. "Okay."

Hunter's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes brightened. "Okay?"

"Three months," I said. "We'll see."

He nodded slowly. "Thank you."

We finished our coffee in silence. When I stood to leave, Hunter walked me to the door. He didn't touch me. Didn't crowd me. Just held the door open and watched me go.

As I drove back to the cottage, Ember settled in a way she hadn't since we'd left Shadowcrest. The phantom cedar-and-smoke was still there, faint and persistent. But beneath it, something new.

Pine and rain.

---

The first week of the courtship, I waited for Hunter to push. To demand. To use his feelings as leverage.

He didn't.

He showed up for the morning pack runs, but he didn't compete with me or try to run at my pace. He just ran alongside, easy and steady, and when the run ended, he went his own way without lingering.

The second week, I found a thermos on my porch. Black coffee, still hot. No note. No knock on the door.

I brought the thermos inside and drank the coffee at my desk, staring at the lakeside cabin deed on the wall.

Ember was quiet. Not silent. Just... resting.

The third week, Hunter mentioned in passing that he'd noticed I never ordered anything with lavender at the café.

I stopped mid-step. "How did you know that?"

He shrugged. "You always skip the lavender scones. And you asked the barista to switch out the hand soap in the pack house bathroom last week."

I hadn't told him that. I'd barely told anyone.

"I hate lavender," I said slowly. "It smells like Shadowcrest."

Hunter nodded. "I figured."

He didn't ask why. Didn't press for details. He just... remembered.

That night, I wrote until my hands cramped. The story poured out faster than I could type. A woman who'd been a placeholder. A woman who walked away. A woman who met someone who saw her, not the ghost of someone else.

When I finally stopped, Ember spoke.

*I like him,* she said quietly.

I closed my laptop. "Yeah. Me too."
