Chapter 4

I didn't think about Everett much anymore. Not consciously, anyway. I had my cottage, my writing, my morning runs with the Pinecrest pack. I had Hunter's quiet, steady presence—three months that had turned into four, then five, and neither of us had called it off.

But Ember still woke me some nights. Not with the sharp, aching pull of those first weeks. This was different. Duller. Like an old wound that throbbed when the weather changed.

I'd lie in the dark, listening to the river, and feel her restlessness. She didn't speak much anymore. She didn't need to. I knew what she was feeling. The phantom bond, faint but persistent, like a thread I couldn't quite cut.

I told myself it would fade. That time and distance would do what willpower couldn't.

Mostly, I just kept writing.

---

Back in Shadowcrest, Everett was building his dream.

I heard about it through the inter-pack gossip that drifted into Pinecrest like smoke. Zoya Rodriguez, the she-wolf who'd returned from Europe, was being elevated. Fast. Publicly. Everett introduced her at gatherings as his intended Luna. He granted her access to pack accounts. He paraded her through the Shadowcrest pack house with the kind of open favoritism that made even allied Alphas raise eyebrows.

I should have felt vindicated. I should have felt nothing.

But Ember stirred every time I heard Zoya's name, and the phantom cedar-and-smoke would hit me for just a second—sharp and intrusive, like Everett had walked into the room.

*He's got what he wanted,* I told her.

She didn't answer. But I felt her unease, low and persistent.

I didn't tell Hunter. There was no point. Everett was my past. Hunter was... something else. Something I was still learning to trust.

---

What I didn't know—what I couldn't have known—was that Everett's Beta was watching.

He noticed things. Small things. The way the Shadowcrest pack house smelled subtly wrong now, like something vital had been removed and the air hadn't adjusted. He couldn't name it. He didn't try. But it sat in the back of his mind, quiet and troubling.

He noticed Buster too. The rescue mutt Everett and I had adopted together, back when I'd still believed in us. Buster padded through the empty rooms now, his nails clicking on the hardwood. He slept at Everett's feet at night, and sometimes the Beta caught Everett staring at the dog with an expression he couldn't quite read.

Loss, maybe. Or regret.

The Beta said nothing. Loyalty meant silence. It always had.

But he watched Everett pour resources into Zoya—money, influence, access—and he wondered, privately, if his Alpha was chasing the right thing.

He kept that thought to himself.

---

One afternoon, Everett's assistant brought him a file from the pack archive. Old records. Stories submitted by pack members over the years. Everett had requested it weeks ago and forgotten why.

He opened the file at his desk, flipping through submissions. Most were mediocre. A few were decent. And then he found it.

A romance story. Handwritten first, then typed. Submitted six years ago by Alina Crawford.

He read the first page. Then the second. Then he couldn't stop.

It was about them. Not explicitly. The names were different. The setting was vague. But the bones of it were unmistakable. A young she-wolf who met an Alpha at a pack gathering. The slow build of a bond. The quiet, hopeful days before everything got complicated.

She'd written it during college. Before the five years of silence. Before the unmarked bond. Before she'd realized she was a placeholder.

Everett sat back in his chair, the pages spread across his desk. His chest felt tight.

He picked up his phone and made a call. It took three days and a significant amount of pack resources, but he acquired the exclusive rights to the story. He told himself it was a gesture. A way to honor what they'd had, even if he'd never told her he valued it.

He locked the manuscript in a drawer in his office.

He didn't deliver it. He didn't even tell her he had it.

It just sat there, in the dark, like everything else he'd failed to give her when it mattered.

---

Buster wandered into the office that night. He sniffed at the drawer, then curled up at Everett's feet.

Everett reached down and scratched behind the dog's ears. Buster's fur still carried the faintest trace of warm honey beneath the jasmine. Alina's true scent. The one Everett's wolf had bonded to over five years without his conscious mind ever noticing the distinction.

He didn't recognize it. Not yet.

But his wolf did. And it ached.

---

In Pinecrest, the rain came down in sheets.

I joined the morning pack run anyway. The trail turned slick and muddy, and most of the wolves peeled off early, heading back to the warmth of the pack house. I kept going. So did Hunter.

We ran side by side, our breath visible in the cold air. The pine-and-rain scent surrounded me, stronger in the wet weather. Ember's attention fixed on it, steady and calm.

When we finally stopped at the overlook, I was breathing hard. Hunter wasn't even winded. He leaned against a tree, watching me with that quiet, patient expression I'd come to recognize.

"You know," he said, "this scent—pine and rain—it's always felt like home to me."

I looked at him. Water dripped from his hair. His eyes were steady.

"Yeah?" I said.

"Yeah." He didn't look away. "Even before I knew why."

Ember went still. Not the grieving stillness of the banquet. Not the restless stillness of the phantom bond nights. This was different. Quieter. Like the beginning of rest.

I stepped closer. "I think I understand what you mean."

Hunter's expression didn't change, but something in his posture softened. "Good," he said quietly.

We stood there in the rain, not touching, just breathing the same air. And for the first time since I'd left Shadowcrest, I felt Ember settle completely.

No phantom cedar. No aching pull.

Just pine and rain. And the quiet, steady presence of a wolf who'd waited six years without asking for anything in return.

I didn't look away.
