Chapter 2

The first motel was somewhere in Nebraska. I pulled off the highway when my hands started shaking on the wheel. The room smelled like stale cigarettes and industrial cleaner. I locked the door, dropped my bag, and collapsed onto the bed without taking off my shoes.

I lasted two hours before the scent hit me.

Cedar and smoke. Sharp and sudden, like Everett had walked through the door. My eyes snapped open. The room was empty. The lock was still engaged. But the scent wrapped around me anyway, phantom and cruel.

Ember whimpered. It was a sound I'd never heard from her before—high and desperate, like a wolf separated from her pack.

*He's not here,* I told her firmly.

*I know,* she whispered back. *But I can smell him. I can feel him.*

I sat up, pressing my palms against my eyes. The bond. The unconsummated, unmarked bond that should have been nothing but was somehow everything. Biology didn't care about dignity. It didn't care that I'd signed a release or driven five hundred miles. It just wanted what it wanted.

I got up and opened the window. Cold air rushed in. I breathed deep, trying to replace the phantom cedar with something real. Diesel fumes. Wet asphalt. Anything.

Ember paced inside me, restless and aching. I felt her claws scrape against my ribs from the inside.

"We're not going back," I said out loud. My voice sounded strange in the empty room. "We're not."

She didn't answer. But she didn't stop pacing either.

I didn't sleep that night. Or the next. By the time I crossed into Washington, I'd learned that the bond didn't need proximity to hurt. It just needed the dark and my exhaustion and Ember's relentless, biological grief.

I kept the car pointed west.

---

Pinecrest territory was green in a way Shadowcrest had never been. Trees pressed close to the roads. The air smelled like rain and pine needles. I followed the directions to the pack house, a sprawling lodge tucked into the forest.

Alpha Serena met me in her office. She was a she-wolf Alpha, which I hadn't expected. Her aura was quieter than Everett's but no less real. It filled the room without demanding I submit to it.

She gestured to the chair across from her desk. "Alina Crawford. You petitioned for residency."

"Yes." I sat. My hands were steady in my lap.

"You have an unconditional release from Shadowcrest." She tapped the document I'd submitted. "That's unusual."

"I negotiated it."

Her eyes sharpened. "Negotiated with whom?"

"The Alpha." I met her gaze. "My former mate."

Serena leaned back in her chair. "Former mate. Unmarked?"

"Unmarked. Unannounced. For five years." I kept my voice even. "He had his reasons. I had mine for leaving."

She studied me for a long moment. I didn't look away. I'd spent five years being invisible. I was done with that.

Finally, she nodded. "Pinecrest accepts petitioners who are honest and self-sufficient. You meet both criteria. Welcome to the pack."

No ceremony. No speeches. Just the quiet click of her pen as she signed the residency form.

I exhaled. Something in my chest loosened, just a little.

"There's a cottage available near the river," Serena said. "Small, but private. The rent is reasonable."

"I'll take it."

She slid a key across the desk. "You'll join the morning pack runs. You'll contribute to pack duties as assigned. And if you need anything, my Beta will help you settle in."

"Thank you, Alpha."

She stood. I stood. We didn't shake hands. We didn't need to.

I walked out of the pack house with the key in my pocket and the unconditional release still folded in my bag. The cottage was a ten-minute drive. It sat on the edge of the river, small and weathered and mine.

I unpacked the one bag I'd brought. Clothes in the dresser. Laptop on the desk. And then I pulled out the lakeside cabin deed—the one Everett had signed over—and hung it in a simple frame above the desk.

Not as a trophy. As a reminder.

I'd negotiated my own freedom. And it had cost me nothing I wasn't already prepared to lose.

---

The first week in Pinecrest, I joined the morning pack runs. The wolves were friendly but not invasive. They didn't ask questions I didn't offer to answer. Ember ran beside them, and for those brief hours, she was almost quiet.

The afternoons, I wrote.

I opened my laptop and stared at the blank document. My fingers hovered over the keys. Then I started typing.

A story about a woman who discovered she was a placeholder. A woman who walked away. A woman who chose herself.

The words poured out. Angry at first. Then sad. Then something sharper—something that felt like clarity.

I wrote under a new pen name. I didn't want Shadowcrest finding me in the pages. I didn't want Everett reading my grief and mistaking it for an invitation.

By the end of the first week, I had ten thousand words. By the end of the second, twenty thousand. The story was raw and unpolished, but it was mine. My best prose, born from my worst years.

The nights were harder.

Ember's phantom bond cravings intensified after dark. I'd be drifting toward sleep, and then the cedar-and-smoke would hit me like a fist. I'd jolt awake, gasping, my wolf whimpering inside my chest.

*He's not here,* I'd tell her again.

*I know,* she'd whisper. *But I still feel him.*

I started leaving the window open at night, letting the cold air and the sound of the river drown out the ghost scents. It helped. A little.

I told myself it would get easier. That the bond would fade. That biology would eventually lose to willpower.

I told myself a lot of things in those first weeks.

Mostly, I just kept writing.
