After My Mate Called Me Useless, My Wolf Awakened Novel Cover

After My Mate Called Me Useless, My Wolf Awakened

At 10:47 on Pack Banquet night, her fingers froze on Graham's collar. Beneath his cedar-and-smoke scent clung wild rose, ash, and the intimate warmth of a she-wolf's skin—hours old. He didn't flinch. He only smiled and closed his hand over hers. In that single breath, their mate bond shattered, and something long dormant stirred awake inside her. A rejected mate. A pack that branded her useless. And a wolf no one saw coming.

Chapter 4

I saw Edrick Voss leave Graham's study at half past nine in the morning.

I was coming down the east corridor with fresh linens for the guest wing when his door opened and the pack healer stepped out. Edrick moved fast, his shoulders hunched forward like a man trying to make himself smaller, and he didn't look up as he passed me. Just a quick nod, his eyes on the floor, his hands clutching a leather document folder against his chest.

I nodded back. I kept walking. I did not stop him.

But I smelled it.

Wolfsbane ink.

It's a specific scent — bitter and green, with a metallic edge that sits wrong in the back of your throat. Healers use it for formal medical seals because it's permanent, because it can't be forged or altered once it's set. Grandfather taught me to identify it when I was twelve. He said any Luna worth her title should know what wolfsbane smells like in all its forms, because wolfsbane in the wrong hands could destroy a wolf faster than any blade.

Edrick's hands reeked of it.

I delivered the linens to the guest wing. I checked that the evening meal preparations were on schedule. I confirmed patrol rotations with Harlan in the training yard. I did my job with the same meticulous competence I had projected for ten years, and I did not let my hands shake.

But inside my chest, the second heartbeat rolled over — slow, enormous, deliberate — and I understood exactly what I had just smelled.

Graham was finishing his timeline.

I went back to my quarters at noon and locked the door.

The bond channel was still wide open. I had kept it that way since the night of the banquet, absorbing every texture of Graham's emotion, every shift in his certainty. Now I pulled it wider — not gently, but with the deliberate force of someone opening a door that was never meant to be opened this far.

The flood hit me immediately.

Anticipation. Bright and sharp and eager, the feeling of a predator who has finished positioning and is simply waiting for the prey to step into the trap. Satisfaction, layered underneath it, warm and smug. And something else — something I had felt from him before but never let myself name.

Relief.

He was relieved that it was almost over. That he would not have to pretend much longer. That the decade of performance was finally reaching its conclusion and he could stop holding the mask in place.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and pressed both hands flat against my thighs.

The mate mark on my neck was still warm. I could feel it pulsing faintly, the bond's physical anchor, the place where his teeth had broken my skin ten years ago and sealed us together. It had been warm every day since. Even through the worst of what I had discovered, even through the scent of wild rose on his skin and the sound of Milena's voice through the locked door, the mark had stayed warm.

I knew it would not be warm much longer.

I reached for the blood mind-link. It opened easily now — the channel between my mother and me no longer dormant, no longer brittle with years of silence. Her presence was immediate, steady, waiting.

*Tell Alaric to move,* I sent. My voice in the link was clear and deliberate. *It will be tomorrow.*

I felt her shock, sharp and sudden, and then her immediate focus. *Are you certain?*

*Yes.*

A pause. Then, quiet and aching: *We're ready. The Royal Guard is assembled. Alaric will ride at first light. You will not face this alone.*

*I know,* I said, and closed the link before the weight of her voice could undo me.

I sat in the silence of my quarters for a long time after that.

The room was the same as it had always been. The bed I had shared with Graham for ten years. The desk where I had kept the pack's records. The small carved wooden box on the shelf above the hearth — the box Grandfather had made for me when I was eight, the box that held my mother's only letter.

I stood and crossed to the shelf. I took the box down and opened it.

The letter was still there, folded small, the paper soft at the creases from decades of reading. I had opened it so many times that I could recite it from memory. *My dearest Callie. I am sorry. I will come back for you. I promise. I love you more than you will ever know.*

She had not come back. Not for years. Not until I had opened the blood mind-link three days ago and asked her to.

I did not read the letter now. I simply held it.

The wolf behind my ribs was no longer pressing outward. It was no longer pacing or surging or throwing itself against the inside of my chest. It was simply present — enormous and patient, breathing in rhythm with me, waiting.

I folded the letter carefully and put it back in the box. I closed the lid and set the box back on the shelf.

Then I lay down on my side of the bed, fully dressed, and stared at the ceiling.

I did not sleep.

I listened to the pack house settle into its evening rhythms. Footsteps in the corridors. Voices drifting up from the main hall. The distant sound of the night patrol assembling in the courtyard. Somewhere below, Graham was finishing his preparations. Edrick was sealing the testimony with wolfsbane ink. Milena was rehearsing her lines.

And I lay in the dark with my wolf breathing slow and steady beneath my ribs, and I waited for the morning that would end everything.
