After My Mate Called Me Useless, My Wolf Awakened Novel Cover

After My Mate Called Me Useless, My Wolf Awakened

At 10:47 on Pack Banquet night, her fingers froze on Graham's collar. Beneath his cedar-and-smoke scent clung wild rose, ash, and the intimate warmth of a she-wolf's skin—hours old. He didn't flinch. He only smiled and closed his hand over hers. In that single breath, their mate bond shattered, and something long dormant stirred awake inside her. A rejected mate. A pack that branded her useless. And a wolf no one saw coming.

Chapter 5

No one told me about the council.

I found out the way I found out most things in Ironclaw — by walking into a room already finished without me. Harlan came to my quarters at eight and said only, "Great hall. Now." His face gave me nothing. He was already turning away before I'd laced my boots.

I knew before I reached the doors.

The great hall never filled this fast, not for anything short of a challenge or a death. But when I stepped through the archway, every bench was full. Warriors along the east wall, standing. Elders in their ceremonial arc at the front, robes pressed, faces arranged into the particular stillness of people who already know the ending of a story and are only waiting to watch it performed. Vera. Kieran. Maren, who would not meet my eyes.

Graham stood at the Alpha's dais. Milena stood just behind his right shoulder, close enough that the position itself was a statement.

The room went quiet the moment I entered — not the ordinary quiet of a hall settling, but the taut, expectant silence of held breath. Two hundred wolves, and not one of them looked surprised.

I walked to the center of the floor because that was where a Luna was meant to stand, and some part of me was still performing the role even as I understood, with total clarity, that the role was already over.

Graham's Alpha tone hit the room before he opened his mouth. It pressed down on every wolf present — I watched shoulders drop, watched Kieran's chin dip toward his chest, watched even Elder Corwin's spine bend a fraction under the weight of it. It did not touch me. It never had.

"I, Graham Hale," he said, and his voice filled the hall with the specific gravity of ceremony, "Alpha of Ironclaw, reject you, Callie Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not metaphor. Not memory. Ice, spreading from the two small scars his teeth had left ten years ago, radiating outward through my collarbone, down my arms, into my chest, until my whole body carried the temperature of a thing already dead. My knees did not buckle. My breath did not catch where anyone could see it.

But somewhere beneath my ribs, in the place where the second heartbeat had been rolling over for days, patient and enormous — something broke open and howled.

It was not a sound the hall could hear. It tore through me alone, a grief so total it had no edges, the sound of ten years collapsing into the shape of a lie all at once. I stood in the wreckage of it and did not move.

I watched Graham's face instead.

There it was — that half-second window I had spent a decade almost seeing and never letting myself name. The warmth left his eyes a fraction of an instant before it left the rest of him, and in that gap I saw exactly what had always been underneath. Nothing. Not cruelty, even. Just absence, wearing a face that knew how to look kind.

Then the warmth came back, painted on, and he was Graham again.

I said nothing. I stood perfectly still, hands loose at my sides, and let the whole room watch me not fall.

Milena stepped forward.

She held a leather folder against her chest the way a woman holds something precious, something that costs her to share. Her voice, when she spoke, was soft and aggrieved, pitched to carry exactly the note of reluctant duty.

"I didn't want to be the one," she said, to the elders, not to me. "But someone has to speak for the pack's future." She opened the folder. "Healer Voss completed a full examination three days ago. I have his findings."

She read them aloud.

Barren. Blood-tainted. A wolf that had never manifested because there was nothing beneath the surface worth manifesting — a defect a decade old, hidden, dangerous, unfit to carry an Alpha's line.

Every word landed in the hall like a stone dropped into still water, and I watched the ripples move outward across two hundred faces.

Elder Corwin rose first.

His hands were shaking — not with doubt, but with something close to rage, the particular fury of a man who believes his bloodline has been quietly poisoned for ten years by something wearing his Luna's face. He did not look at me. He did not ask a single question of the testimony, did not ask why Edrick's hands still carried the bitter green scent of wolfsbane ink, did not ask why the examination had never once been performed in my presence.

"Tainted blood does not belong in this pack," he said, and his voice shook the rafters. "Strip her. Brand her. Cast her out before she poisons another generation."

The warriors were already moving toward me before the last word left his mouth.
