After My Mate Betrayed Me, I Claimed the Throne

For seven years, Zoe has reached into a cold, empty place where her wolf should be. Then a scent unravels everything: vanilla, peach, and something warm, female, unmistakably Giselle. Zoe can't turn around. She can't move. The mate bond she has waited a lifetime for has arrived at last, but it isn't the future she was promised. The throne she was meant to claim now rests on a betrayal she never saw coming.

Chapter 3

The dock smelled like tar and dead fish, and I had never been so glad to smell anything in my life.

Della's escort boat sat low in the black water, running lights off, a single figure at the wheel who nodded once when I came down the rocks and said nothing else. I climbed in with the satchel against my chest. No one asked my name. No one needed to. I imagine Della had described me well enough — the woman who would smell like nothing, and then, apparently, like everything.

The engine caught low and quiet. Ironcrest's shoreline began to slide backward.

I sat on the deck boards with my knees pulled up and let the wind take my hair apart, and that was when my wolf spoke to me the way she must have always meant to, before they made her go quiet.

*He's on his knees still,* she said. Not a guess. A certainty, threaded up through whatever thin, fraying line still ran between me and the mark on my neck. *I can feel the ground under him. Splinters in his palms. He fell wrong.*

*Good,* I thought, and meant it, and felt no guilt about meaning it.

*His Beta went to him first,* she went on, voice low and even now, none of the torn edges from three nights ago. *He shoved him off. Tried the tone. It came out broken — half of it, maybe less. The mark's bleeding him dry from the inside. He doesn't understand yet what he's losing. He thinks it's just pride.*

I closed my eyes and let the bond carry it to me in pieces, the way sound carries through water — muffled, delayed, but unmistakably real. A slurred command, half its weight gone, warriors who should have scattered at the first syllable simply standing there, staring at their Alpha like he was a stranger wearing a familiar face. And under it, closer, warmer, wrong: Giselle's hand closing around his arm in front of everyone, and Killian — Killian letting her.

I opened my ledger on my knee and wrote it down by feel, in the dark, my handwriting drifting with the boat's rock.

*Alpha tone failed publicly, front rows. G. Olson took his arm — accepted, witnessed. Garrick present. Said nothing.*

That last part I underlined twice. Garrick Hudson had spent seven years not asking questions. I had a feeling that particular mercy was about to run out.

The fragments kept coming as the shore thinned to a dark seam behind us — his voice, cycling through the dying channel like a radio losing signal. Rage first, sharp and familiar, the same tone he'd used on me across a hundred dinner tables. Then, an hour later, something I had never once heard from him in seven years: pleading. Small. Confused. *Zoe.* Just my name, over and over, into a silence he still believed was empty on my end.

He didn't know I could hear it. He'd built his whole second life on the assumption that I couldn't. I let him keep believing it a little longer. I wrote down every fragment anyway — twelve entries by the time Ravenshollow's cliffs finally broke the horizon, pale and impossible in the pre-dawn light, like something carved rather than grown.

My phone buzzed against my hip somewhere in the second hour. I hadn't expected it to have signal out here, but Mira Whitlock had never struck me as a woman who let a small thing like distance stop her from being useful.

*Border patrol, gash from a wolfsbane trap on the north sweep. Healer went for the vials. Empty,* the text read. Then, a minute later: *Two more presenting symptoms by tonight. Healer's frightened. Doesn't know why the supply's gone. Garrick's asking her where it came from. Not accusing. Yet.*

I read it twice. My wolf went very still and very attentive, the way she did whenever something mattered.

*Yet,* I thought.

Seven years of vials refilled every Thursday, quiet as breathing, and not one soul in Ironcrest had ever asked where the miracle came from. It had simply always been there, the way the sun is always there, until the night it wasn't.

I typed back with salt-stiff fingers: *Let him ask.*

I didn't feel sorry for the warrior with the gash. I felt something colder and more complicated — a kind of arithmetic, seven years of unpaid debt finally coming due on a ledger I hadn't written, but had absolutely made sure would exist.

The boat's engine dropped to a low idle as the pilot angled us toward a break in the cliffs. Somewhere behind me, an ocean back, a mark was bleeding a man dry from the inside, and a pack was starting, for the first time in seven years, to ask where its blood had actually come from.

Ahead of me, white stone caught the first gray light of dawn.

I closed the ledger, pressed my thumb once against the healing crescents in my palm, and watched Ravenshollow rise out of the sea to meet me.
