After My Mate Betrayed Me, I Claimed the Throne

For seven years, Zoe has reached into a cold, empty place where her wolf should be. Three days before the ceremony that would make her Luna, that silence finally breaks—her wolf stirs and speaks her name. Then a scent unravels everything: vanilla, peach, and something warm, female, unmistakably Giselle. Zoe can't turn around. She can't move. The mate bond she has waited a lifetime for has arrived at last, but it isn't the future she was promised. The throne she was meant to claim now rests on a betrayal she never saw coming.

Chapter 4

Ravenshollow's dock was white stone and salt wind, and Della was already running down it before the boat finished tying off.

She didn't wait for a plank. She didn't wait for anything. She hit the last three feet at a jump and had her arms around me before my feet were fully steady on the boards, and I went stiff — just for a second, just long enough that she had to feel it against her ribs.

She held on anyway. Tighter, if anything.

"Little storm," she said into my hair, like she'd been saving the name for seven years and finally found the mouth to put it in. "Look at you. Look at you, you're here, you're actually—" She pulled back enough to hold my face in both hands, and her eyes were wet, and she didn't apologize for that either. "I have a room. I've had a room for years. Don't ask me why, I never had a good answer, I just kept it ready."

"You didn't know I'd come," I said.

"I didn't know anything," Della said. "I just wasn't going to be caught without one."

She walked me up from the dock with her hand at my back, not steering, just present, the way you'd walk beside someone recovering from an illness you weren't sure had finished with them. The room was on the second floor, tall windows facing a courtyard floored entirely in black marble, veined through with something that caught the early light like a seam of ore. The bed was already made. Fresh linens, the kind that smelled like lavender and nothing else, no one else, no ghost of anyone folded into the fabric.

On the dresser sat a small silver locket.

Della picked it up before I could ask and pressed it into my palm, closing my fingers over it with both her hands like she was sealing an envelope.

"Yours," she said. "I have been carrying it home for you."

I opened it with my thumbnail. A single curl of hair, dark, infant-fine, coiled inside like something that had been waiting a very long time to stop being alone.

I didn't cry. I have gotten very good, over seven years, at not doing that where people can see. But something in my chest turned over slow and heavy, and Della watched it happen on my face and didn't make me explain it.

"Sleep," she said instead, gruff now, covering the moment the way people who love you sometimes do. "You look like you crossed an ocean on spite alone."

"Close enough," I said.

---

Roman Ashford came for me the next morning with the particular calm of a man used to handling things other people found frightening.

He was tall in the way that made a room recalibrate itself around him, silver threading early through dark hair, and he spoke to me the way I imagine he'd speak to a spooked horse — clear, unhurried, no wasted movement.

"There's a ceremonial basin," he said. "Ancestral silver. If your blood carries the Lycan royal line, it ignites on contact — white flame, contained, no heat you'd feel past your palm. If it doesn't, nothing happens. No shame either way. We test dozens a year and most of them are nothing." He paused. "I don't think you're nothing."

"Why not?"

"Della's instincts," he said. "And a smell under your scent I haven't caught on anyone in twenty-three years." He set a small silver vessel on the table between us, and beside it, a blade thin as a letter opener. "I need your permission before I take your hand."

Seven years married to a man who never once asked permission for anything.

"You have it," I said.

The cut was quick and clean, barely a sting. My blood welled dark at first, ordinary, and then it touched the silver.

The flame came up thin and white and absolutely silent, a column no wider than a candle's, and it didn't flicker the way fire is supposed to flicker. It simply stood there, burning something in the metal that had apparently been waiting a very long time to be lit.

Roman didn't move for three full seconds. I watched something shift behind his eyes — not surprise, exactly. The specific, hollowed-out look of a man who has spent decades preparing for a disappointment that has just, without warning, failed to arrive.

"We need to bring you before the King," he said, very quietly, and his voice had gone unsteady in a way nothing else about him had.

---

The mind-link found me that afternoon, and it did not stop.

*Zoe. Zoe, answer me. This isn't funny anymore.* Command first, the Alpha tone bleeding through it thin and cracked, like a recording of something that used to work. An hour later: *Please. Just tell me you're alive. That's all I'm asking.* By evening it had worn down to nothing but my name, said over and over into a silence he still believed was empty, a man throwing a rope down a well with no idea the well had walls now, and ears, and a ledger.

My wolf growled low in my chest each time his voice came through, a sound of pure contempt that startled me with how good it felt to simply let happen.

I opened the ledger and wrote the timestamp, steady-handed, and did not answer him.
