Chapter 2

The torches made the whole clearing smell like smoke and pine pitch, which was good, because it meant nobody noticed I wasn't wearing any scent of my own. They never noticed. That was the entire point of me, these past seven years — a woman-shaped silence at the edge of every gathering.

The pack stood in their rows, oldest families closest to the dais, Omegas at the back where they always put us. Three neighboring Alphas sat in the guest chairs with their Betas flanking them, here to witness the binding. Garrick stood near the fire with his arms crossed, jaw tight, the way he always looked when he suspected something was about to go wrong and had no idea what.

Killian came up the dais steps unsteady. I smelled the whiskey before I saw the flush in his face — sharp and sour, cutting straight through the smoke.

"Look at her," he said, not to me. To the crowd. His voice pitched loud, performing. "Look at what I'm about to chain myself to."

A ripple went through the front rows. Garrick's arms uncrossed.

"Seven years I carried a Luna with no wolf. No scent. A woman the Moon Goddess forgot to finish making." He laughed, short and ugly. "She must've been cruel that night. Or drunk. Because no sober goddess pairs her golden Alpha with a broken Omega and calls it a gift."

In the front row, Giselle did not lower her eyes. She did not even try to arrange her face into something appropriate. She smiled — small, private, pleased — the smile of a woman watching a debt get collected on her behalf.

Seven years ago that would have gone through me like a blade. I would have folded around it and called it deserved.

I lifted my chin instead.

*Now,* my wolf said. Not a question. A permission I didn't need but she gave me anyway, because she'd waited seven years to give me anything at all.

I breathed in, and I let go of every wall I'd built to hold her back.

It came up out of me like something breaking the surface of water it had been drowned under for years — lilac first, cold and sharp and violet-dark, and then underneath it iron, blood-iron, the smell of something old and royal and absolutely nothing like an Omega's scent should ever be. It didn't drift. It didn't waft politely through the crowd the way scent is supposed to. It hit the clearing like a wave hits a shore, and the air went thick enough to taste.

Wolves staggered. I heard it — the collective intake of breath, the shuffle of boots losing purchase on packed earth. The three visiting Alphas, men who answered to no one in three states, went down onto one knee in the dirt without deciding to, their bodies making the choice their minds hadn't caught up to yet.

Killian's face went the color of the moon overhead. His mouth was still open from the sentence he hadn't finished.

I spoke before he could find it again.

"I, Zoe Lawson," I said, and my voice came out clean, unhurried, carrying to the back rows without effort, "reject you, Killian Hudson, Alpha of Ironcrest Pack, as my mate and my bond."

The words landed like a verdict. I watched them land.

Somewhere behind my ribs, something tore — not in me. In him. I saw it cross his face, a flinch too deep for whiskey to explain.

I reached into my robe and drew out the last vial. Silver-cleansed. Mine. I'd carried it against my heart the whole walk up the dais steps like a woman carrying a stone she meant to set down for good.

I pressed it into his hand. His fingers were ice.

"You owe me seven years of this," I said. "Consider the debt open."

Then I turned, and the crowd did the only thing a pack this outmatched knows how to do in the presence of a scent like mine. Throats went bare. Heads bowed. A corridor opened through them, silent, unbidden, all the way to the tree line.

I walked it without looking back.

Behind me I heard him go down. Knees on the dais boards, a sound like something giving way at the foundation. The mark, I knew, without needing to see it — cracking open, starting to bleed. I felt nothing where I used to feel everything. That, more than the scent, more than the vow, was how I knew it was finally, truly over.

The moment the trees closed around me and the torchlight dropped away, Mira stepped out of the dark like she'd been carved from it, a satchel already in her hands.

"Three days of his movements. Mind-link patterns. All of it," she said, folding paper into my palm. "And the vial — the one Giselle called a wedding gift. I swapped it before the ceremony. The real one's in the bag."

I tucked the paper into my ledger without breaking stride.

I looked back once. Torchlight, small and orange and very far away now, and somewhere inside it a man on his knees in the dirt.

Then I kept walking.
