At a tense parley, Sullivan Graves sacrifices his mate Claire to the Bloodmoon pack to shield Lexi Peterson. Shoved into enemy hands, Claire's world crumbles—until a dormant Lycan bloodline stirs within her. Now her survival depends on embracing the terrifying power her old pack feared, forging a path from broken pawn to ruthless royalty.

After My Mate Betrayed Me, I Became Lycan Royalty Chapter 1

The mate bond snapped at 2:15 on a Thursday afternoon, right as Sullivan Graves pressed his palm flat against my collarbone and shoved me toward the enemy.

The parley line was drawn in black chalk across the gravel clearing. On our side stood the Ironclad enforcers. On the other stood the Bloodmoon emissary, flanked by six massive wolves in human form.

Lexi Peterson stood half a step behind Sullivan. Her scent hit me before he even spoke—sweet, artificial lilac, layered thick over the skin of his neck where my mark used to be.

"Take her," Sullivan said. His voice was level, empty of regret. "You release Lexi unharmed, and Claire stays as your hostage."

I didn't blink. "Sullivan?"

He didn't look at me. He looked at the Bloodmoon commander, squared his shoulders, and spoke the formal rejection vow before both packs.

"I, Sullivan Graves, Alpha of Ironclad Pack, reject you, Claire Ashwood, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck burned white-hot, then turned to dead ice. It felt like a heavy iron door slamming shut inside a hollow room. Inside my mind, my wolf, Veyra, didn't whimper. She snarled—a deafening, feral roar of pure fury that rattled my ribs before the severance severed our link and shoved her into a cold, suffocating silence.

Sullivan reached out to grab my shoulder and force me forward, hitting me with a sudden blast of his Alpha tone. *"Submit, Claire."*

The pressure slammed into my skull like a lead weight. My knees twitched. But I clamped my teeth together until I tasted copper, jerked my chin up against the crushing command, and forced my eyes to bore directly into his. I didn't drop to my knees. I didn't shed a single tear.

Two Bloodmoon enforcers clamped their heavy hands onto my arms. They dragged me backward across the gravel line. Through the dust, I caught one final image: Lexi stepping smoothly into the empty space at Sullivan’s right side. Her fingers curled around his forearm, her painted lips curving into a smile that was supposed to look sympathetic, but was pure victory.

They threw me into an armored van and hauled me south.

In the Bloodmoon compound, I was an Omega again. Lower than an Omega. I had no pack, no wolf to lend me speed, and no leverage. They put me to work scrubbing silver-stained concrete in the sub-basement holding cells and hauling iron crates until my hands split open. Every morning at dawn, I ran laps around the muddy perimeter fence in human form. Veyra was locked behind a wall of static, but my muscles were still mine.

Two months in, the sound of a beating echoed down the west corridor.

I pushed open the door of cell four with my mop bucket in hand. Sullivan’s Gamma, Cassian, was chained to the wall by his wrists. A compound enforcer was bringing a silver-tipped rod down toward his exposed ribs.

I didn't think about rank. I stepped straight between them.

The rod cracked across my left forearm. Silver burned into my skin, sizzling and sharp, but I didn't make a sound. The enforcer blinked, startled by an unarmed girl standing between him and his target.

"Get out," I said quietly. "Commander wants him alive for questioning."

The man grunted, spat on the floor, and left.

Cassian hung from his chains, coughing blood. He looked up at me through swollen eyes, stunned. "Why?" he rasped. "Sullivan traded you like trash. I stood there and watched him do it."

"You did," I said, wiping the blood from my arm. "And now you owe me your life. Not Sullivan. Me."

He held my gaze, and something shifted in his bruised eyes—the first crack in a loyalty Sullivan thought was permanent.

For two years, I kept my head down and built my weapon.

I cleaned the compound commander’s administrative offices three nights a week. While I swept, I read. I memorized every document left on the mahogany desks: pack ledger 408, the secret offshore payments to Ironclad, the dates of illegal wolfsbane shipments, and the forged reports showing how Sullivan’s father had ambushed the late Bloodmoon Alpha thirty years ago. Over three thousand lines of data. Every night before I slept, I recited them in the dark like a prayer.

Then the fire came.

A rogue raid hit the southern compound at midnight. Explosions tore through the barracks, and smoke filled the lower levels. While wolves panicked and shifted in the flames, I found a cracked support beam in the basement wall. I kicked through the crumbling stone, pulled myself into the frigid boundary river, and swam north.

It took me four days on foot to reach the Ironclad border.

I crouched in the brush twenty feet from our old patrol line, resting near an auxiliary comms tower. Close enough that the pack's open mind-link frequency crackled faintly against the dead nerve endings in my neck.

Sullivan’s voice came through the static, rich and casual. He was talking to his Beta, laughing.

"Trading that disposable Omega was the cleanest move I ever made," Sullivan said, his amusement ringing clear. "Bloodmoon thought they took my mate. In reality, I planted a spy without costing us a single warrior. If she burned in that compound raid, it just saves us the paperwork."

I sat in the cold dirt.

I raised two fingers and pressed them against the scar on the side of my neck. No static. No phantom pull. Just dead, smooth skin.

Over the open link, Sullivan's voice cut through the air again, sharp and decisive: *"Send the formal summons to the Lycan Council. Announce the ceremony for dawn—Lexi takes the Luna seat tomorrow."*

I lowered my hand, turned my back on the Ironclad territory line, and walked south into the rogue wilderness.
