My Husband Chose His Pregnant Mistress—I Kept the House and Erased His Name

9.5 / 10.0
At eight months pregnant, I discovered Ryan had moved his pregnant mistress into our home. His mother's fix? Raise both babies as twins and forgive him because he "had needs." I didn't shed a tear. I handed over the divorce papers I'd already drafted and threw them out of the house my father bought me. Now I'm erasing Ryan's surname from our daughter's birth certificate and reviving the luxury design career I gave up for him. His mother's advice is costing him everything—and with a billionaire investor at my side, his remorse is something I no longer have time for.

My Husband Chose His Pregnant Mistress—I Kept the House and Erased His Name Chapter 1

I thought Ryan and I were finally becoming a family when I reached seven months of pregnancy. Then, he didn’t come home. At 2 AM, he texted that his childhood friend, Sophie, had a panic attack and he was staying over. The next morning, his shirt smelled heavily of her perfume. I tried to confront him, but my mother-in-law, Margaret, called first. "Sophie is fragile after her divorce," she said. "You have a husband and a baby; she has nothing." Ryan just stood there, rolling his eyes and asking me not to be a jealous pregnant wife. I finally realized my place in this marriage was always negotiable. I didn't scream or cry. I just picked up my phone and canceled all the payments for the lavish baby shower Margaret was hosting tomorrow.

The key turned in the front door at 6:14 in the morning.

I sat on the living room sofa, my swollen feet resting flat on the hardwood. At seven months pregnant, sleep was already a fragile, broken thing. Last night, it hadn’t come at all.

Ryan stepped into the foyer. He looked exhausted, his dark hair ruffled and his tie shoved into his coat pocket. When he saw me sitting in the dim light, he flinched slightly before recovering his smooth, practiced composure.

"Olivia," he said, kicking off his oxfords. "You’re up early. You shouldn’t be sitting in the cold."

"Where were you, Ryan?"

My voice was quiet, lacking the tremor he probably expected.

He sighed, loosening the top two buttons of his dress shirt as he walked toward me. "I told you in my text. Sophie had a massive panic attack. Hyperventilating, shaking—she couldn't breathe. Her sister is out of town, and she didn't have anyone else to call."

"So you stayed until dawn."

"I was at urgent care with her until three, and then I drove her back to make sure she took her sedatives." He stepped closer, reaching out to touch my shoulder. "I lost track of time. My phone died around four."

As his hand brushed my collarbone, the scent hit me.

It wasn't the sharp, sterile smell of a hospital triage room. It was sweet, powdery, and unmistakably expensive. French freesia and honeyed amber.

Sophie’s signature perfume.

The scent clung to the lapel of his coat and the collar of his shirt, thick enough to turn my stomach. She hadn't just cried on his shoulder; she had been wrapped around him.

Before I could speak, the screen of my phone lit up on the coffee table. The caller ID flashed with my mother-in-law’s name: Margaret.

I answered and put it on speaker.

"Olivia?" Margaret’s sharp, imperious voice cut through the quiet room immediately. "Is Ryan back yet?"

"He just walked in," I replied.

"Good. Don't start interrogating him," Margaret said smoothly, not even bothering with a greeting. "He told me about Sophie’s episode before he went over there last night. The poor girl is all alone after that messy breakup. Her family lives halfway across the country."

I looked up at Ryan. His eyes shifted toward the kitchen, refusing to hold my gaze.

"You have a husband, Olivia," Margaret continued, her tone dripping with thinly veiled condescension. "You have a home, financial security, and a baby on the way. You have everything. Sophie has nothing right now. As the woman of the house, you need to show some grace and yield a little. Don't be petty about a childhood friend needing support."

Yield.

To the woman who had spent the last three years calling my husband every time a lightbulb burned out or her heart got bruised.

"Is that all, Margaret?" I asked.

"Just remember who you are," Margaret said dismissively. "I’ll see you tomorrow at Grandview Conservatory. The setup starts at ten sharp."

She hung up without waiting for an answer.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Ryan cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck. "Look, my mom’s just trying to keep the peace. She knows how stressed you get."

"You spent the night with another woman," I said, looking directly at his rumpled collar. "When we got married, we agreed on one non-negotiable rule. No spending the night alone with anyone else. No exceptions."

Ryan's expression darkened, the apologetic facade cracking into irritation.

"I didn't 'spend the night' with her, Olivia. I was helping a sick friend," he snapped, throwing his coat onto the armchair. "Can you not become one of those jealous pregnant wives? It’s exhausting."

*One of those jealous pregnant wives.*

The words hit me like a slap, cold and stinging.

Eighteen months ago, I was a senior director at a top architecture and design firm, leading national projects and pulling in six figures. When the doctor told us my chances of conceiving were dropping by the month, Ryan had held my hands and begged me to step back. *Take a leave,* he had whispered against my hair. *Let me provide. Our family comes first.*

I gave up my promotion. I endured three cycles of hormone injections, bruising my own thighs until they turned purple. I dealt with the nausea, the body changes, and the crushing isolation of staying home while he climbed the corporate ladder.

I had given up my career to build his legacy, and now, carrying his child, I was reduced to a caricature. A nagging, jealous burden.

"You think I'm being jealous?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

"I think you're making an issue out of an emergency," Ryan said, checking his watch with obvious annoyance. "Sophie was in crisis. If I hadn't gone, something terrible could have happened. You're sitting in a warm house with a roof over your head, and all you can do is keep score. Just drop it. I need to shower before I go into the office."

He turned on his heel toward the stairs.

I didn't yell. I didn't throw anything. The burning fury that usually accompanied our arguments had completely vanished, replaced by an icy, absolute clarity.

I picked up my phone and unlocked it.

I found the contact for the Grandview Conservatory event department. I pressed call and tapped the speaker button.

Ryan stopped on the third step, his hand pausing on the banister.

The line rang twice before a cheerful voice answered. "Good morning, Grandview Conservatory events desk, this is Brenda speaking."

"Hello, Brenda," I said clearly. "This is Olivia Vance. I’m calling regarding the private banquet room and the botanical courtyard booked for tomorrow afternoon under my name."

Ryan turned around slowly, his brow furrowing. "Olivia, what are you doing?"

"Ah, yes, Mrs. Vance!" Brenda replied warmly. "The floral installations are scheduled for delivery at eight tomorrow morning. We're just waiting on the final authorization for the remaining balance."

"Cancel the service package," I said.

Brenda paused, confusion evident in her tone. "Excuse me? Cancel the catering and floral package?"

"Yes. Cancel the catering order, the floral arrangements, the cake, and every add-on tied to my card. Leave only the bare banquet room covered by the deposit."

Ryan’s eyes widened. He took two brisk steps back down the stairs. "Olivia, hang up the phone right now."

I kept my gaze fixed on him, my voice unwavering. "I am aware that canceling the service package less than forty-eight hours in advance means forfeiting the twenty-percent deposit. That's fine. Do not charge the remaining balance of eighteen thousand dollars to my personal credit card."

"Mrs. Vance, are you sure?" Brenda asked, sounding panicked. "This is the baby shower with fifty-two confirmed guests—"

"I am sure. Thank you, Brenda. Please send the cancellation confirmation to my personal email."

I ended the call.

The living room went dead silent.

Tomorrow’s baby shower wasn't just a celebration; it was Margaret’s personal vanity project. She had commandeered the guest list, inviting the wives of Ryan’s board members, his senior partners, and half her prestigious social club to show off her impending grandchild.

She had dictated the theme, the five-tier cake, and the imported peonies.

And I had paid for every single cent of it out of my personal savings account.

Ryan stood at the bottom of the stairs, completely frozen. The color had drained from his face, leaving him pale and wide-eyed.

"Are you insane?" His voice cracked, the irritation instantly replaced by raw panic. "My mother invited the partners' wives. The CEO's wife is flying in from Chicago this morning! Everyone is coming!"

"Then you and your mother can entertain them," I said softly, standing up from the sofa. "Since you two think I have so much to spare, you can host them yourselves."
