Chapter 1

The wind on Denali felt like knives against my cheeks.

We were standing at fourteen thousand feet on a narrow snow ridge. Below us, clouds boiled like thick white soup. In front of me stood Corbin Hart, my husband of four years, and Kalani Ramirez, the woman he always called his sweet cousin.

“Our guide had altitude sickness, Rosie,” Corbin said. He pushed his snow goggles up. His handsome face was full of fake concern. “We have to push for the summit now. The window is closing.”

“Come on, Rosie,” Kalani chimed in. She flashed me an impatient smile. “Don’t be a baby. Corbin knows what he’s doing. We don't need a certified guide.”

I looked at Corbin’s gloved hand. It rested casually on the red climbing rope connecting the three of us.

In my previous life, that same hand had held a serrated knife.

I remembered the sound of nylon snapping. I remembered the bottomless blue shadow of the crevasse rushing up to meet me, and my own screams tearing out of my throat until the ice swallowed me whole.

I didn't scream now. I didn't beg them to turn back like I had before. My chest felt cold, still, and completely empty.

I unzipped my outer pack without a word.

“Rosie? What are you doing?” Corbin frowned.

I ignored him. I pulled out the shared gear: the snow pickets, the ice screws, the extra carabiners, and the heavy camp stove. I moved with quiet, steady speed. I clipped all of it securely to a fixed rock anchor drilled into the granite wall beside the trail.

Then, I reached down to my harness.

I unclipped the safety carabiner. I threw their rope into the snow at Corbin's feet.

Corbin stared at the loose rope, then let out a sharp laugh. “Are you serious? You’re turning back here? You’re throwing away twenty grand because you lost your nerve?”

Kalani rolled her eyes. “Let her go, Corbin. She’s dead weight anyway. We’ll summit without her.”

I strapped my lighter pack onto my shoulders. I didn't look at either of them. I didn't explain. You don't waste breath on people who have already dug your grave.

I turned around and took my first step down the mountain.

“Rosie!” Corbin shouted behind me, his voice carrying an ugly sneer. “Don't expect me to wait for you at base camp!”

The wind whipped the words away. I kept walking.

On top of my white climbing helmet, a tiny red light blinked once every three seconds.

Last night, in our cheap hotel room in Talkeetna, I had opened my eyes to this second chance at life. The old Rosie would have cried. The old Rosie would have begged Corbin to love her.

Instead, I had spent two hours linking my 4K action camera to a satellite hotspot. I set it to auto-sync to a private, encrypted cloud drive. Every breath, every sneer, and every word spoken on this trail was uploading straight to a secure remote server.

In my first life, my camera had smashed on the rocks when I fell. This time, the mountain would remember everything.

The descent was brutal. The storm rolled in early, turning the world into a blinding white roar. My thighs burned. Ice coated my eyelashes. But two hours later, I staggered into the safety of the fourteen-thousand-foot ranger camp.

I unzipped my windproof suit, pulled out my satellite phone, and dialed a number I knew by heart.

The phone rang twice.

“Rosie?” my mother's voice came through the receiver.

Cora Montgomery had always been a quiet woman. Over the years, I knew she had sensed something off about Corbin, but she had stayed silent to keep my marriage peaceful.

“Mom,” I said quietly. “I’m off the mountain. I’m safe. But I need you to listen carefully.”

She didn't ask silly questions. She heard the steel in my voice.

“I’m here,” Cora said softly. “Tell me what you need.”

“Get Dad to freeze Corbin’s corporate expense accounts at the firm,” I said. “Tonight. Don't tell his parents. Just do it.”

There was a split second of silence on the line. Then Cora replied, “Consider it done.”

High above us, Denali didn't wait.

Two hours after I reached camp, a deep boom shook the valley. Corbin and Kalani, lacking proper gear and blind to the weather, had triggered a massive wind slab near the summit ridge. The mountain gave way.

It took the National Park Service rescue team six hours to dig them out.

The news hit base camp like a shockwave. Corbin was alive, but barely—four broken ribs, internal bleeding, and severe black frostbite on his hands. Kalani was in worse shape. The ice had crushed her lower spine.

They loaded them onto an air-ambulance helicopter bound for Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

As the medical crew strapped an oxygen mask over Corbin's pale face, a ranger’s body camera leaned in close. Corbin pulled the mask aside with trembling, blackened fingers. He stared directly into the lens, tears spilling down his cheeks.

“My wife...” he wheezed, his voice raw with manufactured agony. “Rosie Montgomery... she took our survival gear. She abandoned us. She wanted us dead.”

The ranger gasped.

By midnight, the thirty-second video clip was uploaded to social media.

By sunrise, it had ten million views. The internet exploded with fury. News channels picked up the story, showing photos of Corbin's ruined body and my smiling wedding portrait.

The top trending hashtag in the world was: #JusticeForCorbin.

I sat on my bunk at base camp, looking at my phone screen in the dim light. I didn't panic. A small, cold smile touched the corners of my lips.

*Good,* I thought. *Cry louder, Corbin. The whole world needs to be watching when you burn.*
