Chapter 2

My phone screen did not stop lighting up.

Every second, a new notification flashed.

*#JusticeForCorbin.*

*#ArrestRosie.*

The video from the rescue chopper was everywhere. Millions had watched Corbin Hart cry into that ranger’s camera. People had cut the clip into slow-motion edits, setting his hoarse, trembling voice to sad piano music.

A tabloid site ran a blurry photo of me from the Talkeetna airstrip. The headline screamed in bold yellow letters: **ICE-COLD WIFE LEFT HUSBAND TO DIE.**

Comments poured in underneath.

*Evil bitch.*

*She wanted his money.*

*Lock her up and throw away the key.*

I didn’t post a statement. I didn’t turn off my phone. I didn't call my lawyer.

I sat at the small wooden desk in my Talkeetna hotel room and took a slow sip of black coffee. It was bitter and hot. It kept my mind razor-sharp.

I opened my laptop. On the desktop, a single folder was open: *Denali_Summit_Raw.*

The little cloud icon next to each video file showed a bright green checkmark. Every single second was uploaded. Every breath. Every word spoken into the thin mountain air. The GPS tags and satellite timestamps were locked in tight. Nothing could be altered.

I tapped the trackpad, closed the laptop lid, and finished my coffee.

*Keep crying, Corbin,* I thought. *Make sure the whole world is watching.*

***

Two days later, I walked into Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

The fourth floor smelled like bleach and cheap television sets. Outside Room 412, the hallway was packed with news cameras and boom mics. Margaret O’Brien-Hart had clearly called every local news station in the state. She loved an audience.

I pushed past the reporters. The camera lenses turned toward me immediately. Red recording lights glowed like hungry eyes.

Inside the room, Corbin was propped up in his hospital bed.

He wore a soft neck brace. Dark purple bruises covered his cheeks, and thick white bandages wrapped his frostbitten hands. He looked pale, fragile, and utterly shattered. He was giving a tearful whisper to a reporter holding a handheld mic.

His father, Franco, stood by the window. His arms were crossed over his chest. He looked at me with cold, tight disgust, like I was something dirty tracked in from the street.

The moment Margaret saw me, she snapped.

Her face went bright red. She charged across the linoleum, her pointed heels clicking violently.

“You!” she shrieked.

A

cameraman squeezed into the doorway, angling his lens right at my face. Margaret knew it was rolling. Her voice rose into a shrill, theatrical scream.

“You monster! How dare you show your face here?” She pointed a trembling, manicured finger inches from my nose. “You tried to murder my son! You left him and poor Kalani to freeze! You took their survival gear because you were jealous! You were *never* good enough for Corbin, and now you tried to slaughter him!”

Corbin squeezed his eyes shut. A single, perfect tear leaked down his bruised cheek.

“Mom, please...” Corbin wheezed softly from the bed. “Don’t... I just don’t understand why she hated me so much. I gave her everything.”

Beside the bed stood a tall, broad-shouldered Black man in a dark suit. A gold badge hung from his belt.

Detective Ray Okafor, Anchorage Police Department.

His notebook was open in his hand. His pen hovered above the paper. He looked at Margaret, then at Corbin, and finally turned his sharp gaze toward me. His eyes were hard and guarded. He was assessing a suspect.

“Mrs. Hart,” Detective Okafor said, his voice deep and steady over the murmur of the press in the doorway. “We’re taking Mr. Hart’s formal statement. He claims you intentionally stripped the team of essential safety equipment, severed the group’s rope, and abandoned them on the mountain with malicious intent.”

Margaret scoffed loudly. “She wanted Kalani dead! Kalani is paralyzed right now in the ICU because of this psycho!”

Franco didn't say a word. He just glared at me with pure, dismissive arrogance. He thought this was over. He thought the Hart family had won.

Every camera lens zoomed in on my face. The reporters leaned forward, waiting for me to cry. They wanted a breakdown. They wanted an angry confession.

I didn't blink. I didn't shout.

I stood completely still in the middle of the room. My heart didn't even race. When you have already died at the bottom of a frozen pit, a few angry people in a hospital room cannot scare you.

I reached into my canvas shoulder bag.

“Mrs. Hart?” Detective Okafor asked again, his tone tightening. “Do you have an explanation for what happened at fourteen thousand feet?”

The room went dead silent. Even the air conditioner seemed to cut out.

I looked at Corbin. He opened one eye, watching me with a smug, hidden sneer behind his oxygen mask.

I pulled out a sleek black tablet.

I looked Detective Okafor dead in the eye, my voice quiet and calm.

“I'd like to show you something,” I said.

I set the tablet on the rolling bedside table, right in front of the detective. I swiped the screen, unlocking the cloud server.

The silence in the room became absolute.
