Chapter 1

I was five months along when I finally let myself believe it. Seven pregnancies. Six losses before this one. But this baby had made it past the danger months my doctor always warned me about, and I had started picking names again, quietly, in my head, where nobody could take them from me.

We were at the Knight family townhouse on the Upper East Side, the one with the curved staircase Lilian loved to photograph for the society pages. I was at the top of it, one hand on the rail, when I felt two palms flat against my back.

Then I was falling.

I don't remember the middle of it. I remember the top, and I remember the marble floor rushing up, and then nothing. When the paramedics got there, the baby was already gone.

I woke up at Mount Sinai in a bed that didn't feel like mine, in a body that didn't feel like mine either. Morphine turned the room soft at the edges. My legs were there, I could see them under the blanket, but I couldn't feel them, and some far-off part of my brain filed that away as something to worry about later, when the fog cleared.

The door was half open. I heard Ford's voice in the hallway, low, even. Not the voice of a man who'd just lost his seventh child.

"Full hysterectomy," he was saying. "Yes. Today, if the swelling allows it." A pause. "The spinal block — I need you to be generous with it. Sienna wants this finished. No more scares, no more waiting rooms. She wants it done right this time."

I didn't move. I didn't make a sound. I lay there and let the words go through me like something cold poured straight into my chest, and somewhere underneath the cold, something else started to harden.

The surgeon murmured something I couldn't catch. Ford said, "Thank you," the same way he'd thank a waiter, and then his footsteps came toward the room, and I closed my eyes and made my breathing slow.

He took my hand like it was made of glass. "Sawyer." His voice cracked, right on cue. "Sawyer, baby, I'm so sorry." I opened my eyes to find his rimmed red, wet at the corners, a tear actually sliding down. Seven years of marriage and I still couldn't tell, looking at him, that I'd just heard him order my body taken apart.

"I'm never going to let anything hurt you again," he said. "You hear me? You're the most important thing in my world. We'll get through this. Together."

I squeezed his hand. I made my voice small and soft, the voice he liked. "I believe you."

Under the sheet, I pressed my fingernails into my own palm as hard as I could. I felt nothing below my waist. Nothing at all.

He fell asleep in the chair around midnight, chin dropped to his chest, phone loose in his hand. I watched him for a long time before I moved. Then I reached over, slow, and pressed his thumb to the screen. It unlocked on the first try. He'd never changed the passcode setup since the day we got married. I used to think that meant he trusted me.

The photos came first. Ford and Sienna in matching cream suits on some private lawn, professional lighting, a photographer's watermark in the corner. A whole wedding-style shoot. Then videos — hotel rooms, captions like "Singapore, business trip," his voice saying her name the exact way I'd heard him say mine.

Then the messages.

I scrolled and scrolled, and the room got very quiet, and my own heartbeat got very loud. They talked about my miscarriages like they were scheduling shipments. Dates. Methods. "The stairs would be cleaner," one message said, from Ford, dated two days before the accident that took our fourth. "She won't suspect anything, she trusts the house." Sienna had replied with a laughing emoji.

Seven children. Seven line items.

I didn't cry. I didn't have it in me yet. I screenshotted every page, every thread, my hands steady in a way that surprised me, and forwarded all of it to an encrypted address only I had ever used — the one tied to the consultancy nobody in this family knew existed. Then I set the phone back on his chest exactly where it had been and lay flat in the dark until the window went gray with morning.

I did not sleep.

By nine, Ford was holding my hand again for the chaplain, dabbing at his eyes while the man offered his condolences for the loss of our seventh child. I thanked the chaplain. I thanked Ford. I asked, in a voice soft enough to sound broken, if someone could bring me water.

When Ford stepped into the hallway to take a call, I opened the drawer of the bedside table and took out my notebook — small, worn, the one I never let anyone see. I wrote down the date. The time. The surgeon's name. And the seven-digit authorization code Ford had recited on the phone, the one I'd heard clean through the fog, the one I would never, ever forget.

Then I closed the notebook and waited for him to come back and hold my hand again.
