Chapter 3

I watched the footage at six in the morning. The kids were still asleep. Trevor was in the shower. I sat at the kitchen table with my phone and my coffee and I pressed play.

The timestamp said Tuesday, 3:47 PM. The camera angle caught the kitchen counter, the fridge, the doorway to the hall. Trevor came into frame first. He was still in his work clothes—dress shirt, slacks, the tie I'd picked out for his birthday last year. Kaeli followed a moment later. She was wearing yoga pants and one of my old sweatshirts.

They stood close. Too close. His hand settled on her waist like it belonged there.

"So when are you going to tell her?" Kaeli's voice was clear through the audio. She leaned against the counter, casual, like they were discussing dinner plans.

Trevor shook his head. "Not yet. I need to set things up first."

"Set things up how?"

"The house. I'm going to suggest we sell it. Upgrade to something bigger. She'll go along with it—she always does." He said it so easily. Like I was predictable. Like I was a problem he'd already solved.

Kaeli tilted her head. "And then what?"

"Then I move the money where she can't touch it. Set up the divorce so she takes the minimum. She won't fight. She's too tired to fight."

Kaeli smiled. She reached up and adjusted his tie. Her fingers lingered on his chest. "What about the kids?"

"Joint custody. I'll be reasonable. She'll be grateful I'm being reasonable." He kissed her forehead. "It's just logistics at this point. She's a logistics problem, and I'm good at logistics."

Kaeli laughed. The sound was light, unbothered. "You're terrible."

"I'm practical," he said.

The footage continued for another thirty seconds. They kissed. He left for a meeting. She poured herself a glass of wine and scrolled through her phone. Then the frame went still.

I watched it again. Then a third time. I studied Trevor's face. The easy confidence. The casual cruelty. The man I'd loved for ten years, talking about dismantling my life like he was rearranging furniture.

I closed the app. I drank my coffee. I did not cry.

Upstairs, the shower shut off. I heard Trevor moving around in the bedroom. I stood, rinsed my mug, set it in the dish rack. When he came downstairs, I was scrambling eggs.

"Morning," he said. He kissed the top of my head.

"Morning," I said. "Coffee's ready."

He poured himself a cup and leaned against the counter—the same spot where he'd stood with her yesterday. "I've been thinking," he said. "Maybe we should start looking at bigger houses. Something with more space. The kids are getting older."

I kept my eyes on the stove. "That's a big decision."

"I know. But I think it's time. We could get a good price for this place. Upgrade somewhere better."

I nodded slowly. "Let me think about it."

"Of course." He smiled. "No rush."

I plated the eggs. I set them in front of him. I watched him eat.

Later that week, I started visiting my mother more often. I'd drop by in the afternoons after Kaeli took the kids to the park. I didn't tell her everything. I didn't need to.

We sat in her kitchen with tea. The same kitchen where she'd raised me. The same table where I'd done homework and told her about my first date with Trevor and cried when my father died.

She looked at me across the table. Really looked at me. "You're different," she said.

"Am I?"

"Yes." She set her cup down. "You're quieter. But not in the way you used to be."

I didn't answer right away. I looked at the framed photograph on the windowsill—me at seven, laughing at something I couldn't remember anymore. My mother had kept it there for thirty years.

"I'm tired, Mom," I said finally.

"I know." She reached across the table and covered my hand with hers. Her skin was warm. "But you're not broken."

"I feel broken."

"You're not." She squeezed my hand. "A woman who knows when to be silent is more dangerous than one who screams."

I looked up. Her eyes were steady. She'd survived her own version of this, I realized. She'd walked this road before me, and she'd made it through.

"What do I do?" I asked.

"You already know," she said.

She was right. I did.

On Sunday, we had dinner at Trevor's parents' house. It was the same ritual we'd done every month for ten years. Adelina cooked. Philip poured wine. Trevor and I sat across from each other at the table, and everyone pretended we were the perfect family.

Adelina smiled at me over her wine glass. "You're so lucky, Selena. Trevor works so hard to give you such a comfortable life."

I set my fork down carefully. "I'm very grateful," I said.

"I hope so." She patted Trevor's hand. "Not every woman has a husband who provides the way he does. You should appreciate that."

Philip nodded. "It's important to recognize sacrifice."

Trevor accepted it all with the same easy grace he always had. He smiled at me. "Selena knows how much I love her."

"I do," I said.

I looked around the table. At Adelina's approving smile. At Philip's satisfied nod. At Trevor's hand resting on his wine glass, his wedding ring catching the light.

They saw me as an accessory. A supporting character in Trevor's story. A woman who should be grateful for the privilege of serving him.

I smiled back at all of them. I thanked Adelina for dinner. I kissed Trevor's parents goodbye.

And I filed it all away with everything else.
