Chapter 4

I found Lorenzo Pierce on a Thursday afternoon.

I wasn't looking for him specifically. I was tracing money. Trevor's money, moving through accounts I didn't recognize, connecting to people whose names appeared in his calendar but never in our conversations. One of those names belonged to Marcus Chen, a venture capital contact Trevor had mentioned once at a dinner party. Marcus had talked about a charity gala in Bellevue. He'd mentioned a tech heir. Young, charming, always surrounded by beautiful women.

I found Marcus's LinkedIn. Then his Facebook. Then a tagged photo from last year's gala. A man in an expensive suit, dark hair, perfect smile. The caption called him Lorenzo Pierce. Founder of some startup I'd never heard of.

I searched the startup. The website looked legitimate. Clean design. Buzzwords about disruption and innovation. A team page with professional headshots. But when I reverse-image-searched the photos, they appeared on stock photography sites. The address listed for the headquarters was a UPS store in Kirkland.

I kept digging.

Lorenzo Pierce had a pattern. He appeared at high-end charity events across Seattle, Bellevue, Portland. He was always photographed with different women—wealthy, beautiful, eager. He stayed in each city for three to six months. Then he vanished. The women never pressed charges. They were too embarrassed. Too ashamed of their own greed.

I read every article I could find. A piece in a Portland weekly about romance scams. A Reddit thread where someone's sister had lost fifty thousand dollars to a man who matched Lorenzo's description. A warning post on a private Facebook group for Seattle socialites.

He was a con man. A polished, professional predator who targeted women with money and weak judgment.

He was perfect.

I sat back in my chair. The study was quiet. Downstairs, I could hear Kaeli laughing at something on her phone. The sound made my jaw tighten.

I opened a new document. I started making notes. Lorenzo's patterns. His preferred venues. His timeline. The psychological profile of his targets—women who measured their worth in designer labels and Instagram followers. Women who believed wealth was the same as love.

Women exactly like Kaeli Hunt.

I worked for three hours. By the time I finished, I had a plan.

The Bellevue gala was in two weeks. I'd received the invitation months ago—a fundraiser for children's literacy, the kind of event where Seattle's affluent showed up to write checks and be seen. Trevor usually came with me. This year, I told him I wanted to bring Kaeli instead.

"She works so hard," I said over breakfast. "I thought it would be nice to give her a night out. Let her meet people, enjoy herself."

Trevor looked up from his phone. "That's generous of you."

"She deserves it," I said. I kept my voice light. Sincere. "Besides, you hate these things. You can stay home with the kids."

He smiled. Relieved, probably, that he wouldn't have to pretend to care about literacy programs for three hours. "If you're sure."

"I'm sure."

I told Kaeli that afternoon. She was folding laundry in the living room—my laundry, I noticed, though I didn't say anything.

"There's a charity gala next Saturday," I said. "I'd love for you to come with me. It'll be fun. Good food, interesting people."

Her eyes lit up. "Really?"

"Really. You've been working so hard. You deserve a night off."

She smiled. The same warm smile she gave the children. The same smile she probably gave Trevor when I wasn't watching. "Thank you, Selena. That's really kind."

"Of course," I said.

I spent the next week preparing. I researched the guest list. I confirmed Lorenzo's name on the RSVP records—I'd called the event coordinator, pretending to be his assistant, verifying his attendance. I studied the venue layout. I picked the right dress for Kaeli—something I already owned, elegant but not flashy, the kind of thing that would make her feel sophisticated without overshadowing the women Lorenzo usually targeted.

I bought her a pair of earrings. Simple, tasteful. I wrapped them myself.

On Saturday night, I drove us to Bellevue. Kaeli talked the entire way. She was excited. Nervous. She asked if I thought she looked okay. I told her she looked beautiful. I meant it. She needed to look beautiful. Lorenzo wouldn't approach her otherwise.

The gala was exactly what I expected. Chandeliers and champagne. A string quartet in the corner. People in expensive clothes pretending to care about children they'd never meet.

I spotted Lorenzo within ten minutes. He was near the bar, talking to a woman in a red dress. When she walked away, he scanned the room. Hunting.

I touched Kaeli's arm. "Let's get a drink."

I steered her toward the bar. I positioned us at the cocktail table directly in Lorenzo's line of sight. I ordered two glasses of champagne. I made sure Kaeli laughed at something I said—loud enough to be noticed, soft enough to seem natural.

Lorenzo looked over. His eyes lingered on Kaeli.

I waited exactly thirty seconds. Then I turned, as if noticing him for the first time.

"Lorenzo?" I smiled. "I thought that was you. How are you?"

He returned the smile. Smooth. Practiced. "Selena, right? Marcus's friend?"

"That's right." I gestured to Kaeli. "This is Kaeli Hunt. She works with my family. Kaeli, this is Lorenzo Pierce. He's in tech."

Kaeli extended her hand. "It's nice to meet you."

Lorenzo took it. He held it just a moment too long. "The pleasure's mine."

I sipped my champagne. I let them talk for exactly three minutes. Then I excused myself. "I see someone I need to say hello to. Kaeli, I'll find you in a bit."

I walked away. I didn't look back.

Across the room, I watched. Lorenzo leaned in. Kaeli laughed. He said something that made her blush. Within twenty minutes, they'd moved to a quieter corner. Within an hour, I saw her save his number in her phone.

I finished my champagne. I smiled at the people who spoke to me. I wrote a check for the literacy program.

And I went home knowing the trap was set.
