Chapter 3

The waterfront venue smelled like champagne and cold salt air, string lights strung across the ceiling like something out of a magazine spread. Two hundred people in cocktail attire, my Series C numbers on a screen behind me, and somewhere in my chest a flutter that wasn't nerves. Eight weeks now. I kept my hand off my stomach on purpose. Investors don't like seeing a CEO who looks fragile.

I raised my glass. "Eighteen months ago, three of you told me my margins were too thin to scale," I said, and the room laughed, warm and easy. "Tonight we closed forty million dollars that says otherwise."

Applause. Camera flashes. I was mid-sentence into my second point when my CFO, Priya, touched my elbow from behind, her face doing something careful and rehearsed.

"Window," she murmured. "Don't react."

I didn't turn my head right away. I finished the sentence I was on — something about our runway, something about Q1 — and only then let my eyes drift toward the floor-to-ceiling glass behind the podium, out across the black water of the marina to the restaurant on the opposite pier, every table lit gold.

Adrian sat at the best one. White tablecloth, a dozen roses fanned across it, a bottle of champagne sweating in a silver bucket. Across from him, Milana laughed at something, her hand pressed to her collarbone like she was overwhelmed by her own good fortune. A small black box sat by her wine glass, ribbon still on it.

I counted the roses. Twelve. I don't know why that was the detail that landed hardest.

"Ma'am?" someone said. I realized I'd stopped talking.

"Where was I," I said, and smiled, and found the sentence again, and kept going. My voice didn't shake. I want that on record, if nowhere else, in my own memory: my voice didn't shake.

It was Wilson Howell who said it, of course. He waited until I'd stepped down from the podium, until I was shaking hands near the bar, and then he raised his voice just enough to skim across three separate conversations.

"Hard to close deals," he said, grinning at the men flanking him, "when you can't even close your husband, huh?"

A ripple of laughter, nervous, quickly swallowed. I turned my glass a quarter turn in my hand and looked at him the way I look at a bad clause buried on page eleven of a contract.

"Careful, Wilson," I said. "That's the kind of line that ages badly."

I didn't wait for his answer. I shook the next hand, and the next, and the next, until the room thinned to caterers folding tablecloths and Priya locking up the projector. I thanked the venue manager by name. I did not look at the restaurant across the water again.

Adrian's building had a doorman who knew me by name too, once. Tonight he just buzzed me up without a word, like he already knew something I didn't want to say out loud.

Adrian opened the door in a dress shirt still buttoned to the collar, a rose — one rose, the thirteenth, apparently — tucked behind him on the entry table like he'd forgotten to throw it out.

"You saw," he said. Not a question.

"Everyone saw," I said. "That was rather the point, wasn't it."

He didn't deny it. That was almost worse than if he had.

"I'm done," I said. My voice came out quiet. Final, the way I say things I've already decided, not things I'm still deciding. "This is over, Adrian. I'll let you end it with whatever's left of your dignity, if you want to try."

He studied me the way he studies a slide under a microscope — clinical, unbothered, like I was a specimen behaving exactly as predicted.

"You'll come back," he said, and almost smiled. "Women like you always do. You need the legitimacy."

I looked at him for a long moment. I thought about telling him he had no idea what I needed. I thought about the twelve roses, the ring box, the ninety seconds of scrubbing that never once scrubbed off what he actually was.

I didn't say any of it. There was nothing left to win by saying it.

I turned and walked back to the elevator, and I didn't look back to see if he was still standing in the doorway, because it didn't matter anymore whether he was.

In the car, under the dome light, I opened the notebook. Date. Time. What he said, word for word — *you need the legitimacy* — because paper trails save lives, and I intended to survive this one.

Then I called Sandra Choi. It was eleven-fifteen at night, and she picked up on the second ring, like she'd been waiting.

"File it," I said. "Everything. Tonight if you can, tomorrow if you can't."

"Delaney," she said, "are you sure?"

I looked out at the black water, at the lights of the restaurant across the marina finally going dark, one by one.

"I've never been surer of anything in my life," I said, and meant it.
