Chapter 4

The first envelope arrived on a Tuesday.

Rachel set it on my desk without a word, the way she handled anything from Marcus Webb — no return address, sealed with a single strip of tape, my name written in his tight, unremarkable hand. I finished the call I was on, clicked off, and opened it.

Two aliases. Three cities. A real estate developer in Portland named Gareth Foss who'd lost eighty thousand dollars and a beach house to a woman named Mila Brennan. A semi-retired hedge fund manager in San Francisco who'd wired sixty-two thousand to a charity that didn't exist, set up by a woman named Lana Brooke. Photographs, court filings, one restraining order that had never been served because the woman had already moved on.

I read every page twice. Then I opened my notebook, wrote the date and time, and started a new section. I labeled it simply: *M.B. — Prior Pattern.*

I did not call Adrian.

The second envelope came four days later. Hotel surveillance photos, printed sharp and clean. Milana and a man I didn't recognize — dark-haired, easy smile, the kind of face that belonged in a nightclub at two in the morning. Portland, two months ago. Vancouver, four months ago. Marcus had paper-clipped a single index card to the top: *Cesar Torres. Nightclub promoter. No known connection to A.S.*

I held the Vancouver photo for a moment. Milana was laughing at something Torres had said, her head tipped back, nothing fragile or trembling about her at all. She looked like a woman who had never once needed protecting in her life.

I filed it behind the first envelope. Wrote the date. Did not call Adrian.

The third envelope was thinner. Medical records, obtained via subpoena through Sandra's office — I didn't ask which judge had signed off, and Sandra didn't volunteer it. The conception date was there in plain clinical language, the kind of language Adrian would have understood immediately if he'd ever bothered to look. The math was simple. The math made Torres the father and Adrian the fool, and I sat with that for a long moment, not out of satisfaction but because I needed to feel the full weight of it before I moved.

I photographed every page. Forwarded the originals to Sandra. Sandra forwarded them to King County financial crimes detectives, as we'd arranged. I put the copies in a manila folder and set it on my bedside table, where I could see it from the bed in the gray morning light.

I still did not call Adrian.

Marcus's final package arrived on a Friday afternoon. It wasn't an envelope this time. It was a bound document, forty-one pages, tabbed and indexed like a legal brief, because Marcus Webb understood that the difference between evidence and noise was organization.

Four hundred thousand dollars. That was the number at the top of page three, and it didn't get smaller the second time I read it. Adrian's accounts — funds that Priya's audit had already confirmed originated from the marital estate, from my company's distributions, from the life I had built — routed through three shell companies, all registered under variations of Milana's aliases, into offshore accounts and a paper trail of luxury purchases: a car in Vancouver, a storage unit in Portland full of designer goods, two wire transfers to a private account in the Cayman Islands that Marcus had traced to a fourth alias I hadn't seen before.

Meticulous. That was the word that kept coming back to me. She was meticulous. In another life, in another set of circumstances, I might have respected it.

I photographed every page. Forwarded the originals to Sandra, who forwarded them to the financial crimes unit with a cover letter I'd approved word for word. I put the copies in the manila folder beside the medical records and the surveillance photos and the prior alias documentation, and I stacked it neatly on the bedside table and looked at it.

Forty-one pages. Three years of her work. Four hundred thousand dollars of mine.

I wrote the date and time in the notebook. Then I closed it.

The spousal support motion arrived the following Monday, which almost made me laugh. *Financial abuse*, his attorney called it. *Withholding marital funds.* Adrian, the man who had wired thirty-eight thousand dollars to a downtown high-rise before the door had even fully closed behind him, was now claiming I was the one causing harm.

Sandra contested it the same afternoon. Priya walked three years of financial records into the courthouse the next morning — contribution statements, tax filings, investment distributions, every dollar that had built the estate Adrian was now claiming I owed him access to. The motion was denied in six days.

Adrian's attorney sent a terse email. Sandra forwarded it to me with a single line appended: *He's running out of moves.*

I read it at my desk, black coffee going cold beside my keyboard, the manila folder in my peripheral vision where I'd brought it in that morning.

Not yet, I thought. But soon.
