Chapter 2

The doorbell rang at 7:40, right when the sky over the lake had gone the color of a bruise.

I knew it was him before I even reached the hall. Adrian never rang twice. He rang once, then waited, like the house owed him patience.

I opened the door and there they were. Adrian in his charcoal coat, jaw set like he'd rehearsed something in the car. And beside him, Milana.

She wore a white sundress. In October. In Seattle. Her arms were bare and goosebumped, and she'd angled her whole body slightly behind Adrian's shoulder, like she needed protecting from me, specifically, on my own porch.

"She has nowhere to stay," Adrian said. No hello. No preamble. "Her lease fell through. She'll take the guest room until she finds a place."

I looked at Milana. She looked at the welcome mat.

"No," I said.

"Delaney." He said my name like a diagnosis. "This is a five-bedroom house. You're being deliberately cruel."

"I'm being deliberately clear." I kept my hand on the door, my voice level, the same tone I used when a term sheet had a clause I intended to strike. "She doesn't cross this threshold. If she does, I'm calling the police and reporting a trespass."

Milana's chin trembled. Right on cue. "I don't want to cause trouble," she said, soft and breathy, the words catching like she was fighting back something enormous. "I can just — I'll sleep in the car, it's fine, really —"

"You won't have to," Adrian said, glaring at me like I was the unreasonable one in this equation. "My wife will find her humanity eventually."

"Your wife found her spine about a week ago," I said. "Try the Marriott. They have very nice rooms for people with nowhere to go."

Something flickered across his face — not shame, I'd stopped hoping for shame — just irritation, the look of a man whose plan wasn't unfolding the way he'd diagrammed it in his head on the drive over. He took Milana's arm, not gently, more like a man retrieving an umbrella he'd left somewhere inconvenient.

"You'll regret this," he said.

"Add it to the list," I said, and shut the door.

I stood there for a second with my palm flat against the wood, listening to his car doors slam, the engine turn over, gravel under tires. Then I walked to my desk, opened the notebook, and wrote the date, the time, what he'd said, what she'd said, word for word. Paper trails save lives. I called Sandra Choi before I even sat down.

Seventy-two hours later my accountant, Priya, called me at six in the morning, which told me everything before she said a word.

"There's a wire you need to see," she said. "Thirty-eight thousand. Out of the Cascadia investment account."

I sat up straight in bed. "I closed the joint accounts."

"You closed the ones you knew about," Priya said. "This one's older. Opened before the marriage, but he was added as a secondary signer two years ago and you never removed him. It funded a lease. Downtown high-rise, month-to-month, first and last plus deposit."

I didn't say anything for a second. I thought about the guest room he'd wanted for her. I thought about how fast he'd pivoted once the door didn't open.

"Freeze everything that touches the marital estate," I said. "Every instrument. And I want a full audit — three years back. Every account, every transfer, every dollar that's moved without my signature."

"That's a lot of hours, Delaney."

"Then bill me for a lot of hours."

I hung up and sat in the gray morning light with my hand resting on my stomach, where the flutter on the ultrasound had been. Seven weeks, going on eight now. I thought about the math again — his hands under that water, ninety seconds, always ninety seconds, like he could scrub off a decision.

My corporate attorney recommended Marcus Webb the same afternoon. He looked like exactly what he was — unremarkable in a way that was clearly a professional asset, gray jacket, a face you'd forget in a crowded elevator. He sat across from me in my office with a legal pad and didn't ask a single unnecessary question.

"Tell me what you already suspect," he said. "I work faster when I'm confirming instead of discovering."

"I suspect she's done this before," I said. "I suspect the 'poor sweetheart with nowhere to go' isn't a new performance."

He nodded like I'd told him the sky was gray. "Give me a name and a timeline. I'll give you a pattern."

"Milana Brooks," I said. "I want everything about her that she doesn't want found."

He wrote the name down, underlined it once, and closed the pad.

"Give me two weeks," he said. "Women like that always leave a trail. They're just banking on nobody looking."

I thought about the wide-eyed girl in the sundress trembling on my porch, so certain I'd fold.

"I've been looking my whole life," I said. "I'm very good at it."

He almost smiled. Almost. Then he stood, shook my hand once, and left me alone with the gray afternoon light and the sound of my own pulse, steady, unhurried, already three moves ahead.
