Chapter 3

I didn't run. There was nowhere to run.

The two men moved fast—one grabbed my arms from behind, the other stepped in front of me, blocking the lane. My keys hit the concrete. The sound echoed once and died.

'Hold her down,' Janelle said.

They forced me to my knees. The concrete bit through my scrubs. I twisted, tried to pull free, but the grip on my arms was absolute. The garage smelled like exhaust and cold stone and something metallic that I realized, too late, was fear.

'Janelle.' My voice came out steadier than I felt. 'Think about what you're doing. You just delivered. You have a baby. This is—'

'Shut up.'

She stepped forward. Looked down at my hands.

I understood then. Completely. The way you understand something in the operating room when the situation has already changed and your only job is to survive it.

She raised her foot.

The first stomp took my right hand. I heard it before I felt it—a sound like green wood splitting—and then the pain arrived, white and total, and I screamed. Not a dignified sound. Not a controlled one. A scream that came from somewhere below thought.

'Please—' I heard myself say. 'Please, stop—'

She didn't stop.

Left hand. The knuckles first. Then the fingers, one by one, methodical, like she was following a list. Each impact sent a fresh wave of something so far past pain that my brain kept trying to file it somewhere else, somewhere manageable, and couldn't.

I stopped screaming at some point. I don't know when. I was on the concrete, cheek against the cold floor, watching a thin line of blood spread from beneath my right hand in a slow, dark arc.

My hands. These hands.

I thought about the cord, twice-wrapped, at 3 AM. I thought about the first time I sutured a tear without supervision and Dr. Howard said, quietly, 'You have the gift.' I thought about ten years of this—ten years of early mornings and late nights and the particular silence of a delivery room right before a baby cries for the first time.

Janelle crouched down. Close enough that I could see her earrings—small gold hoops.

'My sister says goodbye,' she said.

Then they were gone. Footsteps. A door. Silence.

I lay there. I didn't try to move my hands. I already knew.

My phone was three feet away, screen cracked, the glass spiderwebbed but still lit. I moved my elbow—slowly, everything slow now—and dragged myself toward it. Every inch cost something I didn't have.

I got to it. Pressed my elbow down on the screen. Found his name.

Dalton.

It rang. Four times. Five.

Rejected.

I called again. The concrete was very cold against my cheek. I focused on that. The cold. Something real.

Rejected.

A third time. My elbow was shaking. I pressed harder.

Rejected.

Across the city, in a restaurant I had never been to, a candle burned low between two wine glasses. Dalton's phone lit up on the tablecloth. He glanced at it. Turned it face-down.

'She's so clingy,' he said.

Jazmine laughed. Reached across the table and touched his hand.

I don't know how long I lay there before I heard them.

Voices. Young. A woman saying, 'Oh my God—oh my God, Kyle, call—'

Footsteps running toward me.

'Ma'am? Ma'am, can you hear me? Kyle, call 911 right now—'

I turned my head. A couple, late twenties maybe, the woman visibly pregnant, the man already on his phone. They'd been here for a prenatal appointment. I recognized the folder in her hand—the kind we give out at the clinic.

'Don't touch her hands,' I said. My voice came out strange. Far away. 'Don't—they're—'

'Okay. Okay, we won't. We're here. We're staying.'

The ambulance took eleven minutes. I know because I counted.

Somewhere in the middle of that counting, I heard smaller footsteps. I turned my head the other way.

A girl. Maybe fourteen. She must have come back down with her mother for something. She looked at my hands once—her face went pale—and then she looked at my face instead, and she sat down on the concrete beside me. Just sat down, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

She found my forearm. The one stretch of skin that wasn't broken. And she held it.

'You're going to be okay,' she said. Her voice was small and very certain. 'You're going to be okay. You're going to be okay.'

She said it on a loop, soft and steady, like a suture pulling a wound closed one careful pass at a time.

I didn't tell her I was a doctor. I didn't tell her anything.

I just lay on the cold concrete of the parking garage, my hands shattered, my phone dark, the girl's warm hand on my forearm—and I let her say it.

You're going to be okay.

I needed to believe it. So I did.
