After My Husband Missed Our Daughter’s Last Heartbeat

The Seattle skyline she once loved now feels like a hollow postcard, glimpsed through rain-streaked windows. Braced against the cold marble island, she faces three objects: divorce papers, already signed in blue ink. Each signature marks the end of a love story crushed beneath the weight of loss—a daughter's final heartbeat her husband never heard. In the echoing emptiness, she must confront whether letting go is the only way to breathe again.

Chapter 2

Brendan gets home at seven. Traffic was bad. He loosens his tie in the elevator. Thinks about the investor call tomorrow. Thinks about dinner. Wonders if Charlotte ordered takeout.

The penthouse is dark. He flips the light switch. The kitchen glows white and cold.

She's not in the living room. Not in the bedroom. He calls her name. No answer.

He drops his briefcase. Walks to the kitchen. That's when he sees it.

Three things on the marble island. Papers. A ring. A yellow square of paper.

He moves closer. His chest tightens.

Divorce papers. Signed. Blue ink. Her signature loops across the bottom line, neat and final.

Her wedding ring sits next to the papers. Platinum. Simple. He remembers buying it. Remembers sliding it on her finger. Remembers her smile.

The Post-it note is last. Four words in her handwriting: *I wish you well.*

There's a fourth thing. A dried flower. Brown at the edges. Flat. He picks it up. Turns it over. A gardenia. He gave her gardenias on their first anniversary. She kept one?

He didn't know she kept one.

His phone is in his hand before he thinks. He calls her. It rings. Rings. Voicemail. Her voice, calm and distant: *You've reached Charlotte. Leave a message.*

He hangs up. Calls again. Voicemail.

Again. Voicemail.

He sets the phone down. Picks up the Post-it. Reads it. Reads it again. *I wish you well.* The words don't make sense. They're too calm. Too kind. He wants her angry. He wants her screaming. He wants her to fight.

This is worse.

He sinks to the kitchen floor. The tile is cold. The Post-it crumples in his fist. He stares at the ring. The papers. The dried flower.

She's gone.

---

The next morning, Brendan doesn't shower. Doesn't shave. He gets in his car and drives to Murphy Ferguson's studio.

The receptionist blinks at him. "Do you have an appointment?"

"I need to see Murphy."

"She's in a meeting—"

"Now."

Murphy appears in the hallway. Reading glasses on her head. Coffee mug in hand. She looks at him. Her face doesn't change.

"Brendan."

"Where is she?"

Murphy sips her coffee. "Who?"

"Don't do that. Charlotte. Where did she go?"

Murphy walks into her office. Doesn't invite him. Doesn't close the door. Brendan follows.

She sits. Folds her hands. Looks at him like he's a stain on her desk.

"I don't know where she is," Murphy says.

"You're lying."

"I'm not. But even if I did know, I wouldn't tell you."

Brendan's jaw tightens. "She's my wife."

"She signed papers that say otherwise."

"Murphy, please. I need to talk to her. I need to explain—"

"Explain what?" Murphy's voice is flat. Calm. Surgical. "That you didn't mean to ignore her for two years? That you didn't mean to choose Aylin over her at every turn? That you didn't mean to show up three hours late to the hospital smelling like another woman's perfume after your wife lost your baby?"

Brendan flinches. "I didn't—"

"You did. You did all of it. And Charlotte gave you chance after chance to see it. To fix it. To choose her." Murphy leans forward. "She's not hiding from you, Brendan. She just stopped thinking about you. There's a difference."

The words hit like a fist. Brendan opens his mouth. Closes it. Nothing comes out.

Murphy picks up her coffee. "You should go."

He leaves. The door clicks shut behind him. Soft. Final. The same sound Charlotte's door made.

---

Brendan hires a private investigator that afternoon. Gives him Charlotte's photo. Her old addresses. Everything he knows.

He sends flowers. Roses to her old firm. Lilies to mutual friends. Gardenias to her parents' estate in Connecticut. Each bouquet comes with a card. *Please call me. We need to talk. I'm sorry.*

None are returned. None are acknowledged.

He leaves voicemails. The first one is calm. Professional. "Charlotte, it's me. I know you're upset. Can we please talk? Just ten minutes. That's all I'm asking."

The second one is less controlled. "Charlotte, please pick up. I don't understand why you left like this. We can fix this. I know we can."

The third one cracks. "Baby, please. I'm begging you. Just tell me where you are. Let me see you. I'll do anything. Anything."

She doesn't call back.

On the fifth day, a letter arrives. Cream envelope. Embossed return address. Spencer family attorney.

Brendan tears it open.

*Mr. Holmes, you are hereby instructed to cease all contact with Ms. Charlotte Spencer, effective immediately. Any further attempts to contact her directly or indirectly will be considered harassment and addressed through legal channels. The divorce proceedings will be handled by our office. Your cooperation is expected.*

Brendan reads it twice. Three times. The paper shakes in his hands.

He crumples it. Throws it across the room. It lands by the kitchen island. Next to the spot where her ring used to sit.

He slides down the cabinet. Sits on the floor. Puts his head in his hands.

The penthouse is silent. The skyline glows outside the window. Beautiful. Empty.

He finally understands. She's not coming back.
