After My Husband Missed Our Daughter’s Last Heartbeat

8.6 / 10.0
The Seattle skyline she once loved now feels like a hollow postcard, glimpsed through rain-streaked windows. Braced against the cold marble island, she faces three objects: divorce papers, already signed in blue ink. Each signature marks the end of a love story crushed beneath the weight of loss—a daughter's final heartbeat her husband never heard. In the echoing emptiness, she must confront whether letting go is the only way to breathe again.

After My Husband Missed Our Daughter’s Last Heartbeat Chapter 1

The kitchen island is cold under my palms. Gray light filters through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our Seattle penthouse. Rain streaks the glass. I used to love this view. The skyline. The Space Needle. The water. Now it just looks like a postcard someone else bought.

I place three things on the marble counter. Divorce papers, signed in blue ink. My wedding ring, platinum band catching the dull morning light. A yellow Post-it note with four words: *I wish you well.*

There's a fourth thing. I pull it from my pocket. A dried gardenia, pressed flat, brown at the edges. Brendan gave me a bouquet on our first anniversary. I kept one flower in my journal for years. I don't need it anymore.

I set it down next to the ring.

My suitcase waits by the door. One suitcase. That's all I'm taking from six years of marriage. Everything else can stay. The furniture. The art. The life we built. I don't want any of it.

I walk to the door. My hand is on the handle when I stop. I don't look back at the skyline. I don't look at the kitchen. I just pull the door shut behind me.

The click is so quiet it's almost nothing.

---

Three weeks earlier, Brendan came home smelling like wine and apologies. His tie was loose. His collar had a smudge of coral lipstick. Not my shade. I don't wear coral.

He dropped his briefcase by the door. Kissed my forehead. Said something about traffic.

I looked at the lipstick. He followed my eyes. Touched his collar. Laughed. "Aylin got emotional at dinner. Client stuff. She cried on my shoulder."

"Right," I said.

He waited for me to say more. I didn't. I took his shirt and folded it into the laundry basket. Smooth, careful, like I was folding a napkin. No wrinkles. No mess.

Brendan watched me. His face did something I couldn't read. Relief, maybe. He thought I was letting it go. He thought I was being mature.

He didn't see that I'd already let him go.

---

Two weeks earlier, I landed the Harrington Hotel pitch. Six boutique properties across the Pacific Northwest. The biggest contract our firm had ever touched. I spent two months on the designs. Murphy Ferguson, my boss, said it was the best work I'd ever done.

Then Aylin cried in Brendan's office.

She told him I humiliated her at the corporate cocktail event. That I made a comment about her dress. That I laughed when she spilled her drink. None of it was true. I wasn't even at that event. I was home with the flu.

Brendan didn't ask me. He called his contacts at Harrington. Pulled strings. Made quiet suggestions. My presentation got moved to a junior associate. The contract went to another firm.

At the company dinner, Brendan sat across from me. Aylin was two seats down, eyes red, tissue in hand. He cleared his throat. "Charlotte, I think you owe Aylin an apology."

The table went silent. Murphy set down her wine glass. Her knuckles were white.

I looked at Brendan. Really looked at him. The man I used to know wasn't there anymore. Just this stranger in an expensive suit, asking me to apologize for something I didn't do.

I smiled. Small. Polite. "Aylin, I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. That was never my intention."

Aylin sniffled. Nodded. Brendan relaxed.

I folded my napkin. Stood. "I'm resigning, effective immediately. Thank you all for the opportunity."

I walked out. Murphy caught up with me in the parking garage. She didn't say anything. Just hugged me. Hard. Fast. Like she was trying to hold all my pieces together.

"Don't you dare apologize for leaving," she said.

I didn't.

---

One week earlier, I found the ultrasound photo. It slipped out of a book I was packing. A tiny gray blob on black paper. Seven months. We were going to name her Emma.

The memory hit like cold water. The rainstorm. My hands shaking on the wheel. Brendan's phone going straight to voicemail. The intersection. The headlights. The hospital.

Waking up empty.

Brendan arrived three hours late. His jacket smelled like champagne and someone else's perfume. He said he was sorry. He said he didn't know. He said Aylin's birthday celebration ran late.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I just turned my face to the wall.

Now, alone in the penthouse, I set the photo on the counter. Next to the divorce papers. Next to the ring. Next to the gardenia.

I'm not angry. I'm just done.

---

This morning, I drive to Murphy's office. She's at her desk, reading glasses pushed up on her head like always.

"I'm leaving Seattle," I say. "Don't tell Brendan where I'm going."

Murphy stands. Pulls me into another hug. "You're going to be okay."

I nod. I believe her.

I get in my car. Drive east. Connecticut. My parents. The home I walked away from six years ago.

I don't look at the skyline. Not even once.
