After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me
After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me Chapter 1
The bond should have sealed at 8:47 p.m. on a Friday night in front of every ranked wolf in Ironveil Pack.
Instead, I stood alone on the ceremonial platform at 8:52, the Luna cloak I'd spent three months hand-stitching still draped across my shoulders, and watched my mate kneel beside another woman on the floor.
Ryleigh's seizure had started the moment the ritual words left the pack elder's mouth. Violent. Convulsive. Her limbs thrashing against the polished wood, foam gathering at the corner of her lips, eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. The kind of medical emergency that demanded immediate attention and made every wolf in the hall forget what they'd come to witness.
Except my wolf wasn't buying it.
*She's performing,* my wolf snarled inside my mind, her fury a hot coil behind my ribs. *Look at her breathing. Look at her hands.*
I looked. Ryleigh's fingers, splayed against the floor, weren't clenched in genuine distress. They were positioned. Deliberate. And her breathing—ragged and loud—followed a rhythm just slightly too controlled for someone genuinely seizing.
But Evander didn't look. He dropped to his knees at her side without a backward glance at me, his hands hovering over her shoulders, his voice sharp with command as he barked orders at the pack healer. The assembled wolves surged forward, forming a tight circle around the spectacle. The ceremony platform emptied. The ritual candles still burned on either side of me, their flames steady and indifferent.
I didn't move.
I stood there, cloak still on my shoulders, the woven sigils I'd threaded into every seam pressing faintly against my collarbones, and waited. Surely someone would remember. Surely Evander would turn around, meet my eyes, and acknowledge that this was supposed to be *our* night. That three years of waiting, of building his pack's strength from invisible foundations, of swallowing every slight Ryleigh engineered, had been leading to this single moment of recognition.
No one turned around.
The pack healer—a middle-aged she-wolf named Iris—knelt beside Ryleigh and began a careful examination. Her hands moved over Ryleigh's pulse points, her neck, the base of her skull. Ryleigh's convulsions had subsided into shallow, theatrical trembling. Iris frowned, her fingers pausing at Ryleigh's wrist, and I saw the exact moment she registered something off. Her gaze flicked up to Evander, her mouth opening as if to speak—
Then Ryleigh's eyes snapped open, wide and glassy, and she let out a low, keening whimper that made every wolf in the room tense. "I can't... I can't breathe in here," she gasped, her voice thin and breaking. "The ceremonial chamber... it's too much... I need..."
Evander's jaw tightened. He looked at Iris. "Can she be moved?"
Iris hesitated. "Alpha, the ceremony—"
"Can she be moved?"
Iris dropped her gaze. "Yes."
That's when Evander stood and turned to face me.
His expression wasn't apologetic. It wasn't even conflicted. It was decided. And when he spoke, his voice carried the full weight of his Alpha tone—a command that vibrated through my bones and pressed against my wolf's submission reflex like a physical hand on the back of my neck.
"Hannah. Vacate the ceremonial chamber."
My wolf reared up in fury, slamming against the compulsion with enough force that my vision blurred at the edges. I felt my claws start to extend, felt the heat of a partial shift crawling up my spine. Every instinct in me screamed to submit, to drop my eyes, to step aside.
I didn't move.
The silence in the hall went absolute. Every ranked wolf—Beta Silas, Gamma Trent, the senior deltas—stood frozen, eyes locked on the platform. Waiting to see if I would break.
I met Evander's gaze and kept my voice level. "This is my ceremony."
Something ugly flickered across his face. Not guilt. Irritation. As if I were a problem he hadn't accounted for, an inconvenience disrupting a solution he'd already committed to.
He closed the distance between us in three strides.
I saw his hand coming. I could have stepped back. I could have shifted. But some stubborn, self-destructive part of me needed to see if he would actually do it—if he would lay hands on his mate, in front of his pack, on the night he was supposed to mark me.
He shoved me into the silver-lined doorframe.
The impact drove the air from my lungs. My dominant hand hit the frame first, palm-flat against the decorative silver inlay, and the metal seared through skin, through muscle, straight to the bone. The pain was immediate and absolute—a white-hot brand that turned my vision into a narrow tunnel and locked every muscle in my body rigid.
I didn't scream.
I bit down on the inside of my cheek hard enough to taste blood and kept my eyes open, fixed on Evander's face as he stepped past me without a second glance. He bent, scooped Ryleigh into his arms with a gentleness he had never once shown me, and carried her toward the ceremonial chamber.
The pack watched in total silence.
Not one ranked wolf spoke. Not Silas, who had sat across from me at strategy sessions for three years. Not Iris, whose healing supplies I had restocked out of my own funds. Not a single delta who had benefited from the territorial wards I maintained every morning before dawn.
Ryleigh, cradled against Evander's chest, turned her head just enough to meet my eyes over his shoulder.
And smiled.
My wolf went silent. Not subdued. Not cowed. Silent in the way a predator goes silent before it strikes.
I peeled my burned hand off the doorframe, the silver leaving a blackened, blistered print across my palm, and looked down at the Luna cloak still draped over my shoulders. The protective sigils I'd woven into the fabric glowed faintly in the candlelight—old magic, the kind that responded to intent and blood.
I reached up with my unbandaged hand and unclasped it.
The cloak slid to the floor in a pool of white fabric and shimmering thread. I left it there, stepped over it, and walked out of the ceremonial hall.
Behind me, I heard the chamber door close.
And I knew, with the cold clarity of someone who has just watched the last three years burn to ash, exactly what I was going to do next.
