Chapter 1

It was Christmas Eve at the Coleman brownstone in Manhattan. The air smelled of pine needles and expensive scotch.

I was seven months pregnant. My hand rested on my swollen belly, feeling the gentle heaviness of new life. I loved this baby. I had endured three rounds of IVF and hundreds of hormone injections for this baby. Looking across the green felt table, I felt a quiet pride.

My husband, Wyatt Coleman, sat directly opposite me. His hair was slicked back, his white shirt crisp and tailored. Next to him sat Lilith Payne. Every year, Wyatt brought her home for the holidays, calling her his “college friend with nowhere else to go.” And every year, his mother, Margaret, set a place for her at the table with a knowing smile.

I had always tried so hard to fit in. I smiled, swallowed their subtle digs, and played the dutiful wife. Tonight, it was our family’s traditional poker game.

“Your deal, Mercy,” Wyatt said, tapping the table with two fingers. His wedding ring caught the glow of the chandelier.

“Coming up,” I said softly.

I shuffled the deck and dealt the cards. Two to Wyatt, two to Lilith, two to Margaret, two to myself. I picked up my hand. A pair of sevens. A modest hand, nothing special.

Then, a cold chill crept straight down my spine.

*“Pair of sevens, incubator. I already told Daddy. Watch him raise.”*

I froze.

The voice did not come from the room. It echoed directly inside my skull. It was shrill, mocking, and unmistakably coming from beneath my own ribs.

Before I could breathe, Wyatt tossed three blue chips into the center of the pot.

“Raise fifty,” he said smoothly.

Beside him, Lilith’s lips curved into a tiny smirk. Under my sweater, two sharp kicks hit my belly. *Tap-tap.* A pause. Then seven rapid flutters.

A code. It was a coded rhythm. Seven.

The room seemed to tilt. The voice inside my head giggled, sharp as broken glass.

*“Stupid woman. Did you really think you were a mother? You’re just a jar. A big, dumb incubator. Mommy and Daddy made me in a lab, and Margaret paid the nurse to swap the dish. I have Mommy’s eyes, not yours. Now fold so Daddy can take your money.”*

My breath hitched in my throat.

The Christmas tree lights blurred into smeared ribbons of gold and red. The laughter around the table sounded far away, like it was underwater.

The IVF clinic. The paperwork Wyatt insisted on handling alone. The cold smiles from his mother whenever I rubbed my belly. Lilith sitting right there in her crimson silk dress, looking at Wyatt like they shared the world.

They did share the world. And they were using my body to build it.

I wasn't carrying my child. I was carrying their bastard. And right now, the thing living inside me was feeding my cards to the man who swore to protect me.

My knuckles turned white against the edge of the felt. For years, I had made myself small to make them happy. I had lost poker games on purpose just to stroke Wyatt’s ego.

Something inside me snapped. The warmth in my chest went dead.

“Excuse me for a moment,” I said. My voice was completely steady. “Baby’s pressing on my bladder.”

“Don’t take too long, honey,” Wyatt said without looking up from his chips. “We’re in the middle of a hand.”

I stood up. On the sideboard near the hallway sat a crystal pitcher of bourbon-spiked eggnog. Pregnant women weren't supposed to drink. But I wasn't protecting my baby anymore.

I picked up a heavy glass, filled it halfway, and walked into the powder room.

I locked the deadbolt. I leaned over the marble sink, stared at my reflection, and threw the alcohol down my throat. It burned like fire, harsh and bitter.

Within seconds, the fluttering in my womb grew sluggish. The shrill voice in my mind began to slur, then faded into a dull, heavy silence.

Quiet. Finally.

I set the glass down with a steady click. I pulled my phone from my pocket and opened my messages.

There was only one person in the world who had never lied to me.

*Caspian Gray.*

My childhood best friend from Seattle. The boy from next door who had walked me home in the rain, who had moved to New York and watched me marry another man without a single complaint.

My fingers flew across the screen.

*I need you.*

I paused. My eyes caught my swollen stomach in the mirror. My jaw tightened.

*Bring the tincture.*

I hit send.

The reply came almost instantly. Three seconds.

*Ten minutes. Hold on, Mercy.*

No questions. No hesitation. Just certainty.

I locked my phone and slid it back into my pocket. I washed my hands with lavender soap, dried them slowly on a monogrammed towel, and fixed my hair. Then I looked at myself in the mirror.

The soft, eager-to-please wife was gone.

I opened the door and walked back out into the warm, scented air of the living room.

I sat down in my chair. Wyatt was leaning back, casually twirling a chip between his fingers. Lilith was sipping her wine, her eyes gleaming with quiet triumph.

“You ready to fold, Mercy?” Wyatt asked, offering that familiar, handsome smile. “Or are you calling my fifty?”

The kicks had stopped. The room was dead silent between us.

I picked up my chips. For the first time in five years, I didn’t back down.

“I’m not folding, Wyatt,” I said softly. I pushed a stack into the middle. “I’m raising you two hundred.”

Wyatt’s fingers twitched. The chip dropped from his hand and clattered against the table.

He frowned, shifting in his seat. His eyes darted toward my belly, waiting for the signal that didn't come. Then he glanced at Lilith.

Her smile had completely vanished.

Neither of them knew what was happening. But they knew the game had changed.
