Chapter 3

The café smelled like burnt coffee and cinnamon rolls nobody ordered. I got there first, like always. I picked the table by the window so I could watch for her hoodie, her fast walk, the way she always crossed streets like she owned them.

My phone buzzed. Lylah: *Almost there. Don't order without me.*

I smiled at the screen. I didn't look up in time.

Outside, past the glass, I saw her step off the curb at the crosswalk. Then I saw the black SUV. It wasn't slowing down. It was speeding up.

The sound will never leave me. Metal and bone don't sound like anything you expect.

I don't remember running. I remember the pavement under my knees, and Lylah's eyes open, and her mouth trying to make a word that never came out. I remember screaming for someone to call 911 while my hands pressed against her, like pressure alone could keep a person from leaving.

The ambulance took her to Morales-Sinai. Amos's family name is carved above the entrance in gold letters. I used to think that was something to be proud of.

In the waiting room, under fluorescent lights that made everyone look half-dead already, Cheyenne started gasping. Her hands flew to her chest. "I can't breathe," she choked out, folding into a chair like her spine had given up. "Someone help me, please—"

A nurse turned toward her.

"No," I said. "My sister. My sister is back there dying."

Amos grabbed the charge nurse by the arm. "My name is on that wall," he said, low and hard, the voice he used in boardrooms. "You will get your best trauma team on Cheyenne Guzman right now."

"Sir, there's a patient in bay three with a—"

"Now."

I watched two doctors peel away from behind the curtain where my sister lay and walk toward a woman who was breathing just fine underneath her performance. I watched it happen and I could not make my legs move fast enough to stop it.

I ended up on the floor beside Lylah's gurney, tile cold through my jeans, holding her hand while a single junior resident tried to do the work of a full team. Lylah's fingers were warm at first. Then they weren't.

"Stay with me," I told her. "Stay with me, Lylah, please, tomorrow, remember, you said tomorrow—"

The monitor's rhythm slowed, stumbled, and went flat. The sound filled the whole room like it filled the whole rest of my life.

The resident looked at me with an apology he didn't have words for. I didn't cry. I just held her hand until it wasn't warm anymore, and I thought, distantly, that I had learned to keep my face still for exactly this kind of moment, and I hated myself for it.

I hired Nathaniel Cole two days later. He had a bad tie and good instincts, and he didn't waste time telling me he was sorry.

"There's a bodega on the corner," he said, spreading a photo across my kitchen counter. "Camera caught the plate before the crash. I ran it." He slid a printout toward me. "Rafael Guzman."

Cheyenne's brother.

I called the DA's office myself. Cole delivered the name, the plate, the timestamp. For one clean day, I believed the world still worked the way it was supposed to.

Then the bodega owner told Cole his security system had "glitched" and lost the footage. Then the witness who'd seen the SUV run the light moved to Ohio without leaving a forwarding address. Then Cole called me, his voice tight.

"Someone bought out my retainer, Mrs. Morales. Anonymous transfer. I've been pulled off the case."

I already knew who.

I found Amos in his study that night, a glass of scotch sweating a ring onto his desk. "You did this," I said. It wasn't a question.

He didn't even flinch. "Rafael's family now, Vivienne."

"Family." The word tasted like something rotten. "He killed my sister."

"It was an accident."

"You erased a camera. You moved a witness. You fired my investigator. That's not protecting an accident, Amos. That's covering up a murder."

He finally looked at me, and there was no shame in his face, only tired irritation, like I was a problem he'd already solved in his own head. "Cheyenne is a wreck over this. She can't lose her brother too. Let it go, Vivienne. For everyone's sake."

"For everyone's sake," I repeated. "You mean for hers."

"I mean for the family we're building."

I looked at this man who had once bled himself pale in a hospital chair for me, who had knelt on cold church steps for three days praying I'd wake up, and I understood, finally, completely, that whatever love had lived in him was gone, replaced by something that only knew how to protect itself.

"There is no family," I said. "Not anymore."

I walked out of his study and did not look back. Somewhere in the apartment, a locket sat in my jewelry box, waiting for me to put it around my neck and never take it off again.
