Chapter 4

Maya arrived on a Tuesday. I didn't know she was coming. She never told me. She couldn't. Her messages hadn't reached me in weeks.

I was in the guest bathroom, carefully balancing on my temporary leg while I brushed my teeth, when I heard the doorman's voice echo up through the intercom.

'Ms. Ferguson has no visitors approved for today,' he said, his voice crackling through the speaker in the hallway. 'I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't let you up.'

I froze. The toothbrush hung in the air. I knew that voice. Maya's voice, sharp with the kind of New York impatience that came from years of meetings that started late and ended with someone's career over.

'Maya?' I called out, my voice bouncing off the bathroom tiles. 'Maya, is that you?'

No answer. Just the doorman's polite, firm refusal.

I grabbed my prosthetic and moved as fast as I could toward the intercom. By the time I reached the hallway, the conversation had shifted.

'I'm calling Mr. Harper,' the doorman said.

'Please,' Maya's voice was tight, the way it got when she was about to lose her temper. 'I'm her friend. Her actual friend. She's been ignoring my calls for weeks. I need to see her.'

There was a pause. Then Wynter's voice, honey-sweet and concerned, came through the speaker.

'I'm so sorry, but Claire isn't seeing visitors right now. The doctors said she needs rest. I'm sure you understand.'

'Maya!' I called again, loud enough that my voice cracked. 'Maya, I'm here!'

The intercom went dead.

I stood there, my prosthetic clicking against the marble, and listened to silence. Downstairs, Maya would be standing on the sidewalk, her flight still fresh on her skin, her phone full of messages I never received. She would be looking up at the penthouse windows, wondering why I wouldn't answer. Why I wouldn't come down.

She didn't know. She couldn't know that the messages were never meant to reach me.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist and counted the seconds until I heard the front door open and close.

Wynter returned, her cream silk blouse perfect, her hair artfully tousled. She saw me standing in the hallway and smiled.

'Oh, Claire. Did I wake you? There was a woman downstairs, claiming to be a friend. I sent her away. You should be resting.'

I said nothing. I turned and clicked back to the guest room on my temporary leg, each step a small mechanical protest.

That night, Cal came to my room. Not to talk. To accuse.

He stood in the doorway, a manila folder in his hands, his face carved from stone. Behind him, Wynter lingered in the hallway, a shadow with satisfied eyes.

'I've been looking at the company records,' he said without preamble. 'While I was gone. What you did with the accounts. The contracts you signed. The clients you pursued.'

I sat on the edge of the guest bed, my hands folded in my lap. The prosthetic felt heavy, foreign. 'I ran the company, Cal. I kept it alive. I grew it. I waited for you to come home.'

'Is that what you call it?' He opened the folder. Papers spilled onto the bed. Financial statements. Emails. Notes in handwriting that looked like mine but wasn't. 'Personal gain, Claire. Exploiting my absence. Siphoning funds. Building your own power base.'

I looked at the papers. The numbers were wrong. The dates were wrong. The signatures were close to mine but not quite. I recognized Wynter's handiwork in every careful forgery.

'You don't believe that,' I said quietly.

'I believe what I see.' He gathered the papers, his movements sharp with disgust. 'I see a woman who used my disappearance to seize control. Who built an empire on my absence. Who never intended to give it back.'

I stood slowly, carefully. My leg clicked. He flinched at the sound but didn't look down.

'Do you want to see the revenue reports?' I asked. 'I built three hundred percent growth in five years. I worked eighteen-hour days. I fought off hostile takeovers. I did it because I thought you were coming back. I did it because I thought you would be proud.'

He didn't answer. He walked out, the folder clutched against his chest like a shield.

The next morning, Julian Hayes appeared at my door. Not to talk. To deliver.

He stood in the hallway, his eyes fixed on the floor, a thick envelope in his hands. He knocked once, softly, then slid the envelope under the door without waiting for an answer.

I picked it up. More papers. Legal documents transferring my last vestiges of advisory access to Harper Enterprises to Wynter. Effective immediately. Signed by Cal.

Through the door, I heard Julian's breathing. He didn't leave right away. He stood there, his hand pressed flat against the wood, as if he could feel my presence on the other side. As if he could feel the weight of what he had just delivered.

Then his footsteps retreated down the hall, and I was alone with the papers and the silence and the growing certainty that there was no version of this story where I would be heard.
