After My Husband Let His Mistress Break My Prosthetic

Under The Plaza's glittering chandeliers, the ballroom sees only the Harpers—together again. But Cal's smile is hollow, his eyes drifting past his wife as if her name slipped his mind. In that fractured silence, she presses her thumb into her wrist, feeling the weight of a marriage performed for strangers. This modern romance captures the raw moment when illusion shatters, and a young woman confronts the truth of her place beside him.

Chapter 5

I found her in the home office at dawn, bathed in the blue light of my computer screen. My desk. My chair. My life, arranged around her like she'd always belonged there. She wore a silk robe—cream, of course—and her hair fell loose the way men liked. The way Cal used to like my hair.

She didn't startle when I appeared in the doorway. She didn’t even look up from the screen. Her fingers moved across the keyboard with the easy confidence of someone who had never been denied anything she wanted.

'I need access to my files,' I said.

She turned then, and I watched her face perform the shift. The mask of sweet concern flickered on, then off, like a light that couldn’t quite catch. Her eyes, when they met mine, were cold and clear and utterly without pity.

'Your files,' she said, her voice pitched low and intimate, the way it was when she spoke to Cal. 'Claire, these aren’t your files. These belong to Harper Enterprises. You should be focusing on your recovery, not... pretending.'

'Pretending what?' I asked. My voice sounded normal. I was proud of that.

'That you belong here,' she said simply. 'That you have any right to be in this room, on this floor, in this life.'

I stepped closer. The prosthetic clicked against the hardwood. She didn’t flinch. She smiled.

'I have legal access to my work product,' I said. 'Those are my notes, my contracts, my client relationships. Even if you’ve revoked my corporate access, the intellectual property—'

'Intellectual property.' She laughed. The sound was bright and sharp, like breaking glass. 'You think I don’t know what you’re doing? You think I don’t see you trying to build yourself a little escape hatch? A way to crawl back into the company when Cal’s memory finally fails him?'

She stood. The silk robe caught the morning light, turning her into something almost luminous. Almost beautiful.

'You’re not going anywhere,' she said. 'You’re not taking anything. You’re certainly not taking him.'

She reached for my laptop—the one I’d left on the desk yesterday, the one with seven years of work inside it—and lifted it like it weighed nothing. Then she brought it down, hard, against the desk’s edge.

The screen cracked. The plastic case split. The sound was terrible. Final.

I didn’t move. I didn’t speak. I watched her destroy the machine that held my life’s work with the same detached precision she’d used to destroy everything else.

'Oops,' she said, her voice small and amused. 'Careless of me.'

Then she turned, and her eyes found my prosthetic. My temporary leg. My weakness.

She moved with purpose now, reaching for the heavy executive chair—the one Cal had sat in for years, the one I’d sat in while he was gone. She lifted it easily, her arms strong in a way I hadn’t expected, and swung.

The impact was precise. Deliberate. The chair connected with my prosthetic at the socket joint, where the plastic was thinnest, where the connection to my body was most vulnerable. I heard the crack before I felt the pain.

The prosthetic shattered. The socket split. The titanium shaft buckled and tore free from the housing. Pieces scattered across the floor—plastic shards, metal fragments, the mechanical pieces of a body that was never meant to be broken.

I fell. My right knee hit the floor hard. My left... my left was exposed. Raw. The surgical scar stretched white and angry across the stump. Blood seeped where the broken socket edge had torn the fragile skin. I could feel it, warm and wet, pooling beneath me.

Wynter stood over me, the chair still in her hands, her chest rising and falling with the effort of the swing. She looked down at me with something that might have been disappointment. Then she dropped the chair and covered her face with her hands.

'No,' she whispered. 'Oh God, no. What have I done?'

The hallway light shifted. Footsteps. Cal.

He appeared in the doorway like a man walking into his own execution. His eyes swept the room—the destroyed laptop, the shattered prosthetic, me on the floor with my blood seeping into the hardwood. His gaze found my exposed stump, took in the surgical scar, the torn skin, the raw truth of what I’d given him. Then his eyes darted away, involuntary and absolute.

He stood frozen in the doorway. Not cruel. Not angry. Just... paralyzed. Unable to move. Unable to look. Unable to be the man I needed him to be.

Behind him, Wynter’s sobs grew louder. More convincing. 'I’m so sorry,' she wailed. 'She startled me. I didn’t mean—I didn’t think—'

He didn’t turn to comfort her. He didn’t call for help. He didn’t kneel beside me or offer his jacket or ask if I was okay. He simply stood there, his eyes fixed on the wall above my head, and did nothing.

I looked up at him from the floor, my blood pooling beneath me, and understood with perfect clarity that this was the moment. This was the point of no return. This was the man I had loved, looking at the wound I’d taken for him, and he couldn’t even see it.
