Chapter 3

The prosthetic made a sound when I walked. A small mechanical click, like a pen top being pressed. I never noticed it in rehab. Everyone there had a sound.

Cal noticed.

The first time I walked into the kitchen, he was pouring coffee. He heard the click, and his hand stopped in the air. The pot tilted. Coffee ran onto the counter. He didn't seem to see it.

"Cal," I said. Just his name.

He set the pot down. He didn't turn around.

"There's fresh coffee," he said to the cabinet. "Wynter made it."

Then he walked out. He took the long way, through the dining room, so he wouldn't have to pass me.

I stood there and watched the coffee spread across the marble. It reached the edge and started to drip. I let it drip. My leg clicked when I finally moved to get a towel.

———

He left rooms I entered. Not fast. Nothing rude. He would finish a sentence, set down a glass, remember somewhere he needed to be. But the pattern was clean. If my step sounded in the hall, his footsteps started up too. Away from me.

At breakfast he sat with his back to the doorway I came through. At night he stayed in the study until he heard my bedroom door close.

I ate alone. I started coming down at seven, before they woke, so the dining room could just be a dining room, not a place where a man was working not to see me.

One morning I caught him in the elevator. Six a.m. Both of us surprised. His eyes hit my face, then dropped, then jumped past my knees to the wall. He pressed the lobby button twice.

"Sleep well?" I asked.

"Fine."

The doors closed. Twenty-two floors. He stood in the corner with his shoulders squared toward the numbers. I stood in the other corner and pressed my thumb into my wrist and counted the floors down.

At fourteen he said, "You should take the service elevator. It's faster."

At twelve I said, "Okay."

He didn't look at me when he got out.

———

Wynter watched all of it. Wynter watched everything.

She brought him tea in the study at night. I heard her voice through the wall, pitched low, patient, the voice of a woman explaining a difficult truth to a tired man.

"…never wanted you to have a life outside the company, Cal. She kept you so busy. I remember you told me once — before, I mean — you felt like you couldn't breathe."

"I said that?"

"You said a lot of things. I didn't want to tell you. It felt cruel."

A pause. His voice, low. "Tell me."

I stopped listening. I walked back to the guest room on my clicking leg and closed the door and stood in the dark with my hand flat on the wood.

I had run his company for five years. I had grown it three hundred percent. I had signed contracts at two in the morning with his empty side of the bed cold beside me. I had done it because I believed he would come home and I wanted there to be something for him to come home to.

And now, through a wall, a woman in cream silk was rewriting me into a warden.

———

She got braver.

I woke one Tuesday and my prosthetic was not on the chair where I had left it. I sat up. I looked. I checked the floor. I checked under the bed. It was gone.

I lowered myself down and moved on my hands and my one knee across the carpet. Slow. The residual limb was still tender in the mornings; it dragged and burned. I got to the hallway. I got to the bathroom.

It was propped against the tub. Neatly. Deliberately.

I sat on the cold tile and put it on. My hands were shaking so hard the pin missed the socket twice. I did not cry. I fitted it. I stood. I clicked back down the hall.

At breakfast Wynter poured juice for Cal and said, sweet as syrup, "Claire, you look so tired. Are you sleeping? Cal, doesn't she look tired?"

Cal looked at his eggs. "She looks fine."

"I worry," Wynter said. She touched her own throat. "I just worry. It must be so hard."

On Thursday, workmen arrived to renovate the guest bathroom. Wynter apologized with her hand on her heart. "I know the timing is awful. But the tile — you saw the tile — it was falling. I couldn't live with myself."

I stepped over a pile of grout bags to get to the sink. My leg clicked against a stray board. I did not fall. I would not fall in this house.

———

Somewhere across the city, in an office I would never sit in again, Mr. Harper was calling a lawyer.

I didn't know it then. I would learn it later, the way you learn things after they have already saved you or failed to.

He did not call Cal. He did not warn me. He simply sat across from a woman in a gray suit and said, in the voice of a man who built things to outlast their builders, "Claire's founding shares. I want them locked. I want them untouchable. I want language a future board cannot pry open with a crowbar."

The lawyer took notes.

"Any restructuring," he said. "Any merger. Any vote. Those shares stand."

"Understood."

"And Mr. Harper —" She hesitated. "Does your son know?"

Mr. Harper looked out the window a long time.

"No," he said. "And he won't."

———

That night I lay in the guest room bed and listened to Wynter laugh at something Cal said down the hall. A real laugh. Bright. Practiced enough to sound unpracticed.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist.

I thought: he cannot even hear me walk.

I thought: I am running out of ways to be quiet enough.

And underneath both, the smaller, harder thought, the one I was not yet ready to say out loud —

Maybe I was not supposed to be quiet at all.
