Chapter 2

The polar night swallows everything. No sun. No moon. Just the flat, endless dark pressing down on the ice.

I stand at the edge of the camp, watching.

Hayden moves through the crew like he's conducting an orchestra. Quiet words. A hand on a shoulder. That voice he uses when he needs people to trust him without thinking too hard about why.

The body is still out there. Fifty yards from where the ice gave way. They pulled it to stable ground an hour ago, but no one's touched it since. It sits on the snow in a dark blue parka, half-covered by the tarp someone threw over it.

No one wants to look at it too long.

I watch Hayden crouch beside the main satellite terminal. His back is to me. His movements are careful. Deliberate.

He disconnects something. Tucks it into his parka.

Then he stands and walks to the backup beacon array mounted on the equipment shed. He's holding a tool I can't identify from this distance. It takes him less than two minutes.

When he's done, he brushes snow off his gloves and heads toward the crew gathered near the supply tent.

I don't move. Don't call out.

I just watch.

The crew looks exhausted. Scared. They've been standing in the cold for hours, waiting for orders that made sense. Waiting for someone to tell them what happens next.

Hayden gives them what they need.

"Listen up," he says. His voice carries across the ice. "I know this is hard. But we have to be smart."

Someone asks about the satellite link. About calling for an emergency airlift.

Hayden shakes his head. "The uplink's down. Storm interference. We're on our own until it clears."

A lie. Smooth and confident.

"The ice is still unstable," he continues. "Another collapse could take out half the camp. We can't risk excavation. And we can't leave the body here. The structural integrity of this entire shelf is compromised."

A young researcher from Norway—Olsen, I think his name is—speaks up. "What are you saying?"

Hayden meets his eyes. "I'm saying we transport the body to the margin. We let the ocean take it. We log it as an unrecoverable loss due to ice movement. It's the only option that doesn't get more people killed."

Silence.

Then, one by one, I watch them nod.

They're afraid. They're tired. And Hayden sounds so reasonable.

I feel something crack open inside my chest. Not grief. Not even anger.

Clarity.

This is who he is. This is who he's always been.

I just couldn't see it until the ice forced me to look.

They start loading the body onto a cargo sled. Two crew members lift it carefully, like they're afraid it might break. The tarp slips. I catch a glimpse of the parka's reflective strips before someone adjusts the covering.

Navy blue. Standard issue.

I don't let myself think about who's inside it.

Not yet.

Hayden glances my way. I'm standing too far back, half-hidden by the shadow of the storage tent. He doesn't see me.

Good.

I turn and walk toward the supply cache. My boots crunch on the snow. The wind pulls at my hood. I don't look back.

The cache is a reinforced container buried three feet down, accessible through a hatch near the generator shed. I kneel beside it and clear the snow with my gloved hands. The hatch is frozen shut. I work the seal loose, pull it open, and drop down into the narrow space below.

It's warmer here. Darker.

I pull out my headlamp and sweep the beam across the shelves. Emergency blankets. Medical supplies. Rations.

And there, in the back corner, exactly where I left it: a hard-shell case marked with a label that says CALIBRATION EQUIPMENT.

I open it.

The satellite phone sits inside, compact and black, wrapped in a protective sleeve. I requisitioned it eight months ago as part of Project Aurora's emergency protocols. Hayden never asked about it. He never asked about a lot of things.

I power it on. The screen glows faint green.

It takes thirty seconds to acquire a signal.

I dial Stone's number from memory. My hands don't shake.

Three rings.

Then his voice. "Addison?"

The sound of it nearly breaks me.

"Stone," I say. My voice is steady. Calm. "Where are you?"

"McMurdo. Why? What's wrong?"

"Were you at the eastern margin today? Any time today?"

"No. Supply manifest got screwed up. I've been stuck here since 0600 sorting it out. What happened?"

I close my eyes.

Relief hits first. Sharp and overwhelming.

Then something else.

If Stone isn't under the ice—

Who is?

"Addison," Stone says. His tone shifts. "Talk to me."

"There was a collapse," I say. "Eastern shelf. Someone's dead. Hayden thinks it's you."

Silence on the other end.

Then: "Where is he now?"

"Trying to dump the body in the ocean."

I hear movement. Stone's breathing changes. He's already moving.

"I'm coming," he says. "Don't let him do anything until I get there."

"How long?"

"Two hours. Maybe less."

I look up at the hatch above me. Through the gap, I can see the distant glow of headlamps near the ice margin.

They're already moving the sled.

"Hurry," I say.

I end the call and climb back out into the wind.
