Chapter 3

Stone makes the first call while I'm still climbing out of the supply cache. I don't hear what he says. I just know that by the time I reach the edge of camp, something has already shifted in the air.

The crew is gathered near the ice margin. Maybe twenty of them. They stand in a loose semicircle around the sled, headlamps cutting white beams through the dark. The body bag sits in the center like an accusation no one wants to name.

Hayden stands closest to the edge. His back is to me. His posture is calm. Controlled.

He's waiting.

I stop at the perimeter. Far enough back that no one notices me. Close enough to see.

Olsen says something I can't hear. Hayden nods. He reaches down and grips the sled's forward handle. Another crew member—Marcus, the field coordinator—takes the rear.

They start to move.

The sled scrapes across the ice. Slow. Steady. The sound is worse than I expected. Metal on snow. The body shifts slightly under the tarp.

No one speaks.

They reach the cliff edge. Ten feet from the drop. Then five.

Hayden positions himself at the front of the sled. His gloved hands rest on the frame. He's not looking at the body. He's looking at the ocean below. Black water. No reflection. Just depth.

He's going to do it.

I take a step forward. My boots crunch on the ice. Too loud.

Hayden doesn't turn.

I open my mouth. I don't know what I'm going to say. I don't know if I can stop this.

Then I hear it.

A sound like thunder rolling across the shelf. Low. Mechanical. Growing louder.

Rotor blades.

Everyone looks up.

The helicopter comes in low and fast. No running lights. Just the searchlight mounted under the cockpit, sweeping across the ice in broad white arcs. It finds us. Locks on.

The beam is blinding.

I raise my hand to shield my eyes. Around me, the crew does the same. Shadows stretch long and distorted across the snow.

The helicopter doesn't land. It hovers twenty feet above the ice, rotors screaming, downdraft kicking up a storm of loose snow. The side door slides open.

A figure drops out.

No ladder. No delay. Just a straight rappel down the line, boots hitting the ice at a run.

Stone.

He's wearing his Navy cold-weather gear. His face is set in the expression I've seen exactly twice before. Once in Kabul. Once at our father's funeral.

He crosses the distance between the helicopter and the sled in seconds. Doesn't slow. Doesn't hesitate.

"Step away from the bag."

His voice cuts through the rotor noise like a blade. Flat. Military-precise. The kind of voice that stops entire operations cold.

Hayden turns.

I watch his face.

I watch the exact moment he understands.

Stone Sullivan is alive.

Stone Sullivan is standing on the ice in front of him.

Every calculation Hayden made in the last six hours—every lie he told, every piece of equipment he sabotaged, every person he convinced to help him dispose of a body he believed was my brother—all of it collapses in the space between one breath and the next.

The expression that crosses Hayden's face is the most honest thing I've ever seen there.

Blank. Vertiginous. Panic.

He opens his mouth. No sound comes out.

Stone doesn't wait for an answer. He moves past Hayden and crouches beside the sled. His hands are steady as he pulls back the tarp.

The parka underneath is navy blue. Reflective strips. Standard issue.

Stone examines the body without touching it. His jaw tightens. Then he stands and turns to face the crew.

"No one moves this body," he says. "No one touches it. This is a federal investigation site as of right now."

Marcus steps forward. "We were told—"

"I don't care what you were told," Stone says. His voice doesn't rise. It doesn't need to. "Forensic team's inbound. ETA forty minutes. Until then, this site is locked."

The helicopter's searchlight swings across the group. I see faces in the beam. Confusion. Fear. Relief.

No one argues.

Stone turns to Hayden. They're the same height. Stone is broader. Hayden looks smaller than I've ever seen him.

"You want to tell me," Stone says quietly, "why you were about to dump a body in the ocean?"

Hayden's mouth works. "The ice—structural instability—we couldn't—"

"Try again."

Silence.

Stone waits. He's good at waiting.

Hayden's eyes flick toward me. Just for a second. Like he's looking for help. For an ally.

I don't move.

His gaze slides away.

"I thought it was you," Hayden says finally. His voice is barely audible. "I thought—"

"You thought it was me," Stone repeats. "So you decided to cover it up."

Hayden doesn't answer.

Stone looks at him for a long moment. Then he turns away.

"Forensics will want to talk to you," Stone says. "Don't go anywhere."

He walks toward me. The crew parts to let him through.

When he reaches me, he stops. His hand comes up. Grips my shoulder.

"You okay?" he asks.

I nod. I don't trust my voice yet.

Stone's eyes search my face. Then he pulls me into a brief, hard hug. His parka smells like diesel fuel and cold air.

"We're gonna fix this," he says quietly. "All of it."

I believe him.

Behind us, the helicopter's searchlight stays locked on the body bag. On Hayden standing alone at the cliff edge. On the ocean that almost swallowed whatever truth is wrapped in that navy blue parka.

I still don't know who's under the tarp.

But I know this:

When we find out, everything changes.
