Chapter 4

The headline hit my phone at six in the morning. Kimber forwarded it without comment. Just the link.

**BLACK WIDOW BRIDE: Wife Accused of Murder-for-Hire Plot Against Mother-in-Law**

The photo beneath it was from my Instagram. A dinner party two years ago. I wasn't smiling. The lighting was bad. I looked cold.

I scrolled. Every gossip site in New York had the story. Page Six. Daily News. Gothamist. They'd all pulled the same photo. The same quote from Ethan's interview: *"She wanted to be the only woman in my life."*

I set the phone face-down on my desk. The Tribeca office was quiet. Seven floors up. The street noise didn't reach this high.

Kimber came in with coffee. She set a cup in front of me. Black. No sugar.

"Channel 7 wants a statement," she said. "So does the Post. And someone from a women's podcast called three times."

"No."

"That's what I told them." She sat down across from me. "Victor Garrison gave a press conference an hour ago. Outside the courthouse. He called you 'a textbook case of pathological jealousy.'"

I picked up the coffee. It was still too hot to drink.

"Let him talk," I said.

Kimber opened her laptop. "The more he talks, the more confident he gets. The more confident he gets—"

"The sloppier he gets," I finished.

She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

My phone buzzed. Then again. Then six times in a row. I turned it over. Twitter notifications. Instagram. Facebook. Messages from people I hadn't spoken to in years.

*Is it true?*

*I always knew there was something off about you.*

*You deserve what's coming.*

I turned the phone off. I opened the Reed v. Barnes file on my desktop. The evidence inventory was up to twenty-three items now. I added a new section: *Media Narrative — Prosecution.*

I started documenting every article. Every headline. Every quote. The timestamps. The outlets. The traffic numbers.

Kimber watched me type.

"You're building a defamation case inside the defense case," she said.

"I'm building everything," I said.

---

Two days later, Kimber came back from lunch with a folder. She dropped it on my desk without a word.

I opened it. Bank statements. Account summaries. Transaction histories. All under Angelique Campbell's name.

I scanned the first page. A checking account with a balance of negative $847. A credit card maxed at $22,000. Another at $18,500. A personal loan from a payday lender at 34% interest.

I flipped to the next page. A handwritten ledger. The kind you buy at a drugstore. Entries in blue ink. Dates. Amounts. Initials I didn't recognize.

The last entry was circled in red: *$340,000. Due 6/15. Final notice.*

I looked up. Kimber was leaning against the window.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"A contact in Atlantic City. Former vice. He knows the loan sharks who work the casinos. I gave him Angelique's name. He made some calls."

"Is it admissible?"

"The bank records are. I subpoenaed them through a licensed PI request. The ledger is hearsay, but it corroborates the debt."

I set the folder down. I opened a new document. I labeled it *Angelique Campbell — Financial Motive.*

I started typing. Kimber sat down across from me.

"I also pulled her tax returns," she said. "She filed as an independent contractor for the last six years. No W-2s. No employer listed. Income reported as 'consulting services.'"

"Translation?"

"Escort work. High-end. Atlantic City circuit. I confirmed it with two agencies. She was on their roster until eight months ago. They dropped her when she started missing appointments."

I kept typing. My hands were steady. I was always steady when I was building.

"Columbia has no record of her," Kimber continued. "No enrollment. No degree. I checked every variation of her name. Nothing."

I added another line to the document: *Fabricated identity — no verifiable educational credentials.*

Kimber pulled a second folder from her bag. Thinner than the first. She slid it across the desk.

"Phone records," she said. "Took longer than I wanted. But we got them."

I opened the folder. Call logs. Highlighted in yellow. A number I didn't recognize. Seventeen calls over three weeks. The last cluster was two days before the honeymoon.

I cross-referenced the number against the NYPD arrest report from the break-in. The lead intruder's phone. Same number.

"She called him," I said.

"Fourteen-minute call the night before you left," Kimber said. "And three more in the forty-eight hours before that. All from a burner phone we found in her handbag lining during the authorized search."

I leaned back in my chair. I looked at the evidence inventory on my screen. Twenty-three items. Now thirty-one.

Kimber was watching me.

"When do we file?" she asked.

"Not yet," I said. "We need the security footage from Rosa's camera. And I want Angelique's escort client list. If we can tie one of them to the intruders, we have conspiracy."

"Rosa's sending the footage tonight. The client list is harder. The agencies don't keep records."

"Find someone who does."

Kimber nodded. She stood up. She picked up both folders.

"The preliminary hearing is in six days," she said. "Garrison's going to push for an indictment. He'll want you arrested before trial."

"I know."

"You ready for that?"

I looked at the screen. At the list of evidence. At the case I'd been building since the day I said yes to a man I should have left at the altar.

"I've been ready since the wedding," I said.

Kimber smiled. This time it reached her eyes.

She left. I went back to typing. Outside, the city kept moving. Inside, I built the weapon that would end this.

One line at a time.
