Chapter 5

Rosa Alvarez called the office on a Tuesday afternoon. I didn't know her. Kimber took the call. She listened for three minutes without speaking. Then she said, "We'll be there in an hour."

She hung up and looked at me.

"Reed family neighbor," she said. "Brooklyn Heights. She has a Ring camera."

We drove to Brooklyn in Kimber's car. Rosa lived two doors down from the brownstone. White hair. Cardigan. She opened the door before we knocked.

"I saw the news," she said. "I know what they're saying about you. It's wrong."

She led us to her kitchen. A laptop sat open on the table. The Ring app was already pulled up.

"My camera faces the side entrance," Rosa said. "I checked the week before the break-in. I found this."

She pressed play.

The timestamp said June 10th. Two days before the honeymoon. The footage showed the brownstone's side entrance. Angelique walked into frame at 3:47 PM. She was wearing jeans and a black jacket. A man followed her. Tall. Dark hoodie. I recognized him from the NYPD arrest report. The lead intruder.

They stood by the gate for eleven minutes. Angelique pointed to the back door. Then to the security camera above it. She made a slashing gesture across her throat. The man took out his phone and photographed the rear entrance. The angle. The lock. The camera position.

Angelique said something. The man nodded. They shook hands. Then they walked out of frame in opposite directions.

The footage ended.

Rosa closed the laptop. "I already sent it to the police. They said they'd look into it. That was four days ago. No one called back."

Kimber pulled a business card from her jacket. "We'll need a copy of that footage. And a signed statement that you're providing it voluntarily."

"Whatever you need," Rosa said.

We left twenty minutes later with the footage on a secure drive and Rosa's notarized statement in a sealed envelope. Kimber drove back to Tribeca without speaking. I held the drive in my lap.

When we got to the office, I added it to the evidence inventory. Item thirty-two.

---

The home security footage from the night of the break-in arrived the next day. The prosecution had submitted it as evidence, but they hadn't analyzed it fully. I could tell from the way Garrison referenced it in his filings. He'd watched the intruders enter. He'd watched them search the ground floor. He'd stopped there.

Kimber and I watched the full footage at two in the morning. The office was dark except for the monitor. The timestamp started at 11:42 PM.

The intruders entered through the back door at 11:51. Three of them. Masked. Flashlights. They moved through the kitchen. The living room. The dining room.

Margaret appeared on the second-floor landing at 11:58. She looked down at them. She didn't scream. She turned and ran.

Not toward the back staircase. Not toward the garden exit.

Toward the master bedroom.

She reached the bedroom at 11:59. She went straight to the safe. Her hands were shaking. It took her three tries to enter the code. The door opened.

She reached inside and pulled out the necklace. My necklace. Gold chain. Three small diamonds. My grandmother's. The one Margaret took from my jewelry box in March.

She held it against her chest with both hands.

The intruders reached the bedroom at 12:02. One of them shouted. I couldn't hear the words through the camera audio. But I saw Margaret shake her head.

The man shouted again. He stepped forward. Margaret backed toward the wall. She was still holding the necklace.

The man grabbed her wrist. She pulled away. He grabbed again. She screamed. The second man moved in. They both reached for the necklace.

Margaret wouldn't let go.

The first man hit her. She fell. The necklace stayed in her hand.

The second man hit her again.

The footage continued for another eight minutes. I watched all of it. When it ended, the screen went black.

Kimber reached over and closed the laptop.

I sat there. My hands were flat on the desk. My breathing was slow.

"She had a clear exit," Kimber said. "The back garden. The gate was unlocked. She ran past it."

I nodded.

Kimber tapped her index finger once on the desk. "We're filing this."

"Yes," I said.

She stood up. She made coffee. I opened the evidence file and added the footage. Item thirty-three.

---

The next morning, our forensics contact delivered the contents of Margaret's safe. Everything had been photographed and logged by NYPD. But there was one document they'd noted and dismissed.

A handwritten list. Four pages. Margaret's handwriting.

I read it at my desk. Kimber stood by the window.

The list was titled *Items Removed — S. Barnes.* It was dated and itemized. Every piece of jewelry Margaret had taken from me. Every gift. Every heirloom. The dates she took them. The estimated values.

The final entry was circled in red pen.

*Gold necklace, maternal heirloom, estimated value $25,000. Removed from bedroom safe, March 14th.*

I set the list down. I placed it in a protective sleeve. I added it to the counter-filing.

Kimber turned from the window. "She kept a record."

"She kept a trophy list," I said.

I closed the file. I checked the inventory one more time. Thirty-four items. Authenticated. Admissible. Airtight.

---

The night before the trial, Victor Garrison held a press conference on the courthouse steps. I watched the livestream on my laptop. Kimber sat across from me with two cups of coffee.

Garrison stood at a microphone. Ethan stood to his left. Angelique to his right. She wore a black dress. Her hair was pulled back. Her face was composed. Bereaved.

"Tomorrow," Garrison said, "we will present overwhelming evidence that Shiloh Barnes orchestrated the murder of Margaret Reed. A woman consumed by jealousy. A woman who could not accept that she would never be the center of her husband's life."

Angelique lowered her head. Ethan reached for her hand.

Garrison continued. "Margaret Reed was a devoted mother. A pillar of her community. She died because one woman's envy turned lethal."

The press asked questions. Garrison answered each one with polished precision. Ethan said nothing. Angelique dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

The livestream ended.

I closed the laptop. I picked up the counter-filing. Every tab was in place. Every document checked.

Kimber set the coffee in front of me. "You ready?"

I looked at the file. At the evidence I'd been building since the day I said yes to a man I should have left at the altar.

"I've been ready since the wedding," I said.

Kimber smiled.

Outside, the city kept moving. Inside, I closed the file and stood up.

Tomorrow, I would end this.
