Chapter 4

The report was forty-three pages.

Eliel sat at his kitchen table at midnight with a glass of water he hadn't touched and read it twice. His forensic accountant — Marcus, who had been on the West family retainer for six years and never asked unnecessary questions — had flagged the summary on the first page in red.

*Pinnacle Ventures: critically overleveraged. Primary capital source: Parker-Madison Holdings LLC. Underlying asset base: estate holdings traceable to the late Mrs. Parker's divorce settlement from Jon Parker. Falsified quarterly reports authored or approved by R. Thompson, CFO. Estimated exposure: $14.2M.*

Eliel set the report down.

He thought about the night Evelyn had told him about the wire transfers. The way she'd said it — flat, precise, no performance in it. *Fourteen months. Twelve transactions.* Like she was reading coordinates off a map instead of describing the slow demolition of her own life.

He thought about the way she timed her exits from Diana's office around his available hours and had never once acknowledged that she was doing it.

He thought about his name. His family's name. The Maybach in the parking structure two floors below his apartment that he hadn't driven in three weeks because the Civic felt more honest.

He picked up his phone. Put it down. Picked it up again.

He didn't call her. He didn't have the right shape of words yet for what he was carrying, and Evelyn Parker was not a woman you called without the right shape of words.

He sat with the report and the untouched water and the weight of everything he hadn't said, and outside his window the city went on being bright and indifferent, the way it always did.

---

She texted him at six-forty the next evening.

*Malibu. Can you pick me up from Diana's at seven?*

He was there at six-fifty-eight.

She got in without a word. She had the look she got after the long sessions — not tired, exactly, more like someone who had been holding a very heavy thing in a very precise grip for several hours and needed to set it down somewhere that wasn't her own apartment.

He drove west. She didn't ask where they were going.

He pulled off PCH onto a turnout above the beach, a stretch of coast where the houses thinned out and the water came in dark and wide and the sky was doing something complicated with the last of the light. He cut the engine.

They sat on the hood of the Civic. The metal was still warm from the drive. Below them, the Pacific moved in long, slow intervals, indifferent to everything.

"My mother's villa is about a mile that way," Evelyn said. She didn't point. She just looked.

Eliel waited.

"She bought it before she married my father. It was hers — not theirs, not the family's. Hers." She paused. "When they divorced, she fought to keep it. I remember sitting in the hallway outside the lawyer's office when I was nine, listening to her voice through the door. She wasn't crying. She was just — steady. Like she'd already decided she wasn't going to lose it."

"She kept it?"

"She kept it." A beat. "She died in that house. I was twenty-four. I sat on the porch with her the last good week she had and we watched the water and she told me that the ocean doesn't care about your problems, which she meant as a comfort." The corner of her mouth moved. "I've been thinking about that a lot lately."

Eliel looked at the water. "Does it help?"

"Sometimes." She was quiet for a moment. "Madison has been pulling assets out of the estate for three years. My father's will left gray areas and she walked right into them. The villa is technically still in a trust tied to the Parker holdings, which means it's been sitting there, accessible, while I was busy believing my marriage was real."

She said it without bitterness. That was the thing about Evelyn — she didn't perform her pain. She just stated it, clean and exact, and let it sit in the air between them.

"I'm going to get it back," she said. Not a declaration. Just a fact she was confirming for herself.

"I know," Eliel said.

She looked at him then. Really looked, the way she did sometimes when she was deciding how much to trust what she saw.

"You say that like you're sure."

"I am sure."

She held his gaze for a moment. Then she turned back to the water.

They sat there for a long time. The light finished doing what it was doing and the sky went dark and the ocean kept moving, slow and enormous and completely unbothered.

Eliel thought about forty-three pages and a red flag on page one and a name he hadn't said out loud to her yet.

He thought: *soon.*

He thought: *not tonight.*

Tonight she had given him something she hadn't given anyone in years. He could feel the weight of it — not a burden, something more like a trust. The kind you don't hand over all at once. The kind that arrives in pieces, quietly, and you only recognize it later as the whole thing.

He was not going to waste it.

---

The text came the next morning from a number I didn't recognize.

*Thought you should know what people are saying. Clara Voss at the Hargrove gallery last night. Said you've been 'cold and checked out for years' and she 'can't blame Andres for finally finding someone who actually shows up.' Multiple witnesses. Figured you'd want to know. — A friend.*

I read it twice. Set my phone face-down on the kitchen counter. Poured my coffee. Let it go cold.

Clara Voss. White wine and careful sympathy and three heart emojis under my breakfast post. *You are such a saint, Evelyn.*

I picked up my phone and opened my notes app. I had a list there — not labeled, not organized, just names. I added hers at the bottom.

Then I finished my coffee and called Diana.

There was work to do.
