Chapter 5

Diana slid the document across the table like she was handling something that might detonate.

"Before you look at that," she said, "I need you to understand what I'm asking you to walk away from."

I pulled the folder toward me. The tab read: *Parker Estate — Settlement Clause 14(b).* I opened it.

"Your mother's original divorce settlement with Jon Parker," Diana said. "Filed 1997. There's a clause — fourteen-b — that was never triggered because your mother died before the conditions matured. It entitles her direct heir to her full proportional share of the Parker family estate, independent of Jon's will." She paused. "Independent of anything Madison touched."

I kept reading.

"The number," Diana said, "is north of thirty million."

I turned the page.

"The catch," she continued, "is that to invoke it cleanly — without Madison's attorneys burying it in counterclaims tied to Jon's estate — you have to waive your claim to Jon Parker's estate first. Entirely. Walk away from it."

I looked up.

"Jon's estate is a trap," Diana said. "Madison spent three years seeding it with debt instruments and liability structures. If you go in there, you'll spend two years in litigation and come out with nothing, or worse. But if you waive it voluntarily, before she expects it, you sidestep the whole architecture." She folded her hands. "And then you hit her with fourteen-b from a direction she never saw coming."

Diana was watching me the way she always did when she thought I was about to make a mistake — careful, prepared to argue.

"Prepare the waiver," I said.

She blinked. "Evelyn. You'd be giving up—"

"A trap," I said. "I'd be giving up a trap." I closed the folder. "Madison built that estate into a maze because she expected me to walk into it. I'm not going to." I slid the folder back. "Prepare the waiver. I want it ready to file by end of week."

Diana looked at me for a long moment. Then she picked up her pen.

"Alright," she said quietly. "Alright."

I drank my coffee. It had gone cold. I drank it anyway.

Andres made the call from his study at eleven-fifteen that night.

I knew this because the study shared a wall with the hallway, and Andres had never learned to lower his voice when he thought the house was empty. I had come back late from Diana's. I had not announced myself.

I stood in the hallway with my coat still on and listened.

"Thursday," he said. "Second hour. The champagne service, not the bar — she always takes champagne at these things." A pause. "Cole knows what he's doing. I've used him before." Another pause, longer. "The photographs need to look real. Not staged. Real." His voice dropped slightly. "After that, it's done. She's out. The Malibu parcel transfers clean."

I stood very still.

The study door was closed. Through it, I could hear him breathing, the small sounds of a man who believed he was alone and safe.

I thought about the Hargrove event. The way he'd leaned close and said *you don't have to do this.* The way his hand had gone to his cufflink.

I turned and walked back down the hallway. I went to the kitchen. I poured a glass of water and stood at the counter and drank it slowly, looking at nothing.

Thursday.

I set the glass down and picked up my phone.

Eliel was parked outside in four minutes.

I got in. He looked at my face and didn't ask. He just pulled away from the curb and drove, and I sat with my hands in my lap and let the city move past the windows until my breathing evened out.

"He's planning something for the gala," I said. "Thursday. Someone named Cole. A sedative in my champagne and photographs staged to look like I cheated." I kept my voice flat. "He wants grounds to push me out of the marriage with no asset claim. Including the Malibu parcel."

Eliel was quiet for a moment. His hands on the wheel were still.

"How much of that did you hear directly?" he asked.

"Enough."

Another silence. Longer.

"The gala," he said. "It's at the Meridian."

"Yes."

He changed lanes. Something in the way he said it — not a question, not quite a statement — made me look at him.

"You know the venue," I said.

"I know the venue."

I watched the side of his face. The streetlights moved across it in slow intervals. He was thinking — not the casual, easy thinking he usually wore, but something more deliberate. More internal.

"Eliel."

"I've been pulling Andres's financial records for two weeks," he said. "My contact flagged some communications last night. A burner number, coded exchanges. I didn't have the full picture yet." He glanced at me. "Now I do."

I held very still. "Your contact."

"He's good. He's discreet." A beat. "He's been on this since the night you told me about the wire transfers."

I looked at him for a long moment. The city kept moving. The heat in the car was exactly right, the way it always was.

"You started before I asked you to," I said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He was quiet for a moment. Not evasive — thinking.

"Because you were already three moves ahead of everyone around you," he said, "and you were doing it alone. And I didn't think that was right."

I turned back to the window.

I didn't say anything. There wasn't anything to say that wouldn't give too much away — not to him, but to myself. The part of me that had been keeping one hand on the exit, waiting for the angle, the price tag, the thing he actually wanted.

It wasn't there. I had been looking for it for weeks and it wasn't there.

That was the most unsettling thing he had ever done to me.

"The Meridian," I said finally. "Tell me what you know about the layout."

He told me.

I listened, and I thought about Thursday, and I thought about thirty million dollars and a waiver and a clause that Madison had never thought to look for.

I thought about my mother's voice through a lawyer's door. *Steady. Like she'd already decided she wasn't going to lose it.*

I had already decided.

Now I just needed Thursday to come.
