Chapter 1

The jacket smelled like mothballs and something else. Something sharp and clean. Not the laundry detergent I bought in bulk at the dollar store. I held it up in the dim light of our Queens apartment and thought about the thrift store Dane said he'd found it at. He'd been so pleased with himself. "Five bucks," he'd said. "Still has the tags."

I was sorting donations. Things we didn't need. Things we couldn't afford to keep. That's what you did when your husband's startup failed and you were living on pasta and canned soup. You made space. You cut costs. You survived.

I checked the pockets out of habit. People left things sometimes. Receipts. Loose change. Gum wrappers.

My fingers brushed paper in the inner lining. A tear in the seam, something tucked inside. I pulled it out.

A receipt. Cartier. Fourteen thousand dollars. Dated three weeks ago.

I stared at it. Read it again. The numbers didn't change.

My hand went back into the lining. This time I felt something hard. Rectangular. I pulled it out slowly.

A phone. Not Dane's phone. A second phone.

I sat down on the edge of our secondhand bed. The springs creaked. I turned the phone over in my hands. It was newer than mine. Sleeker. I pressed the power button.

It opened without a passcode.

The screen lit up with notifications. Texts. Photos. A group chat.

I opened the texts first. The contact name was just a letter. K.

*Miss you baby.*

*That thing you did last night…*

*When are you coming over?*

I scrolled up. Weeks of messages. Months. I opened the photos. A woman with dark hair and red lips. Selfies in a marble bathroom. A dinner table with wine glasses and candlelight. The label on the bottle said something French. Expensive. A bed with white sheets. Skin. I closed the photos.

I opened the group chat. Seven people. Names I recognized. Dane's college friends. Guys he met for drinks.

The most recent message was from Dane. Two days ago.

*Can't make it tonight. The houseplant is in one of her moods.*

Someone replied: *Dude when are you gonna leave her?*

Dane: *Soon. Once I figure out the cleanest exit. She trapped me, man. Whole sob story about her dead parents. I felt bad. Now I'm stuck with a leech who thinks she deserves my money.*

Another reply: *That's rough bro.*

Dane: *Tell me about it. At least Kori doesn't ask questions.*

I read it twice. Then I set the phone down on the nightstand. I straightened it so the edges lined up with the corner. Then I straightened the pen next to it. Then the water glass.

My hands were steady.

Three years. I had lived in this apartment for three years. I had bought the dented cans because they were cheaper. I had skipped meals so Dane could eat. I had told myself sacrifice was love. I had believed him when he said the startup failed. When he said we had nothing. When he said we had to be careful.

I had believed him.

I stood up. Walked to the kitchen. Opened the drawer where I kept the bills. The phone bill. The electric bill. The credit card statements I wasn't allowed to see because Dane said it would stress me out.

I pulled out my own phone. The screen was cracked. I'd had it for four years. I scrolled through my contacts until I found the number I hadn't called in two years. Petra Voss. My mother's estate attorney.

It rang three times.

"Naomi?" Her voice was surprised. Warm. Concerned.

"Petra." My voice sounded normal. Calm. "I have a question."

"Of course."

"My controlling share in Vargas & Associates. The fifty-one percent my mother structured in the trust. Is it still active?"

Silence on the other end. Then: "Yes. It's intact. It's always been intact. Why?"

"I need certified copies of the shareholder documentation. Can you have them ready by tomorrow morning?"

"Naomi, what's going on?"

"I'll explain later. Can you do it?"

"Yes. I'll have them ready by nine."

"Thank you."

I hung up.

I walked back to the bedroom. Picked up the second phone. Put it back in the jacket lining exactly where I found it. Hung the jacket back in the closet.

Then I lay down on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I didn't feel anything except a cold, clear space opening up inside me where something else used to be.

By the time the sun came up, I had a plan.
