Chapter 2

Ellis's baby was born on a Tuesday morning in early spring. I heard about it from a text message Derek sent to someone else. The notification lit up his phone on the kitchen counter while he was in the shower. *She's here. Healthy. Perfect.*

I stared at the screen until it went dark.

Three weeks later, two police officers came to the apartment. They were polite. Professional. They asked if I would come with them to answer some questions. Derek stood in the doorway of the bedroom and watched. He didn't ask what was happening. He already knew.

At the station they showed me photographs. A car seat in the back of Ellis's vehicle. Close-ups of fingerprints on the handle. My fingerprints. An officer slid a printed stack of text messages across the table. Threatening language. Obsessive references to the baby. Timestamps from my number.

I read them twice. My hands didn't shake. I felt nothing.

"These aren't mine," I said.

The detective—a tired-looking woman with gray at her temples—leaned back in her chair. "Ms. Lane, we have security footage from the wellness center showing you near the nursery wing on three separate occasions. We have witness testimony describing erratic behavior. And we have these messages."

"I didn't send them."

"Your husband provided a statement this morning." She opened a folder. "He describes you as unstable since your recent losses. Fixated on Ms. West's child. He believes you pose a genuine safety risk."

I looked at her. My voice came out flat. "He said that."

"Yes."

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. The pressure helped. It always helped.

"I didn't do any of this," I said.

She closed the folder. "We're holding you for seventy-two hours while we complete the investigation."

They took me to a private detention facility twenty minutes outside the city. The kind of place that didn't look like a jail from the outside. Clean brick. Landscaped grounds. Inside it was different.

The intake officer led me down a narrow hallway. Fluorescent lights. Concrete walls. She stopped in front of a door with a small reinforced window and unlocked it.

"Solitary hold," she said. "Standard protocol for this type of case."

I looked through the window. A windowless room. Maybe eight feet by ten. A cot. A steel toilet. Nothing else.

My throat closed. "I can't—"

"It's temporary. Seventy-two hours maximum."

"I can't be in there." My voice cracked. "Please. I have claustrophobia. Severe. I can't—"

She wasn't listening. She opened the door. "Inside."

I stepped in because there was nowhere else to go. The door shut behind me. The lock turned. The sound echoed.

I stood in the center of the room and counted. One breath. Two. Three. The walls were too close. The ceiling was too low. There was no window. No light except the fluorescent strip overhead that buzzed like something dying.

I sat on the cot. Pressed my thumb against my wrist. Counted again.

The first night I didn't sleep. I rocked back and forth with my knees pulled to my chest and my eyes closed and counted my breaths out loud until my voice gave out. The punishment closet at the group home had been smaller than this. Darker. They used to lock us in there for hours. Sometimes a whole day. I learned then that if I counted I could survive anything.

I counted now.

On the second day I started losing time. Hours disappeared. I would blink and the light would be different and I wouldn't know if it was morning or night. I pressed my thumb so hard against my wrist that the skin split. I watched the blood and felt nothing.

On the fifth day I stopped counting.

On the eighth day I heard Jayleen's voice through the door. Muffled. Furious. Arguing with someone. The lock turned. The door opened. Light flooded in and I couldn't look at it.

"Sienna." She was kneeling in front of me. Her hands on my face. "Look at me. Look at me."

I blinked. Her face came into focus. She was crying.

"I'm getting you out," she said. "Right now. There was a procedural error. They didn't file the hold correctly. You're coming with me."

She pulled me to my feet. My legs didn't work right. She held me up. We walked down the hallway together. Past the intake desk. Past the officers who didn't look at us. Out into the parking lot.

The sky was gray. It was raining. I stood in the rain and tilted my face up and felt the water on my skin and thought, *This is what it feels like to be outside.*

Jayleen drove. I sat in the passenger seat and stared out the window. She kept glancing at me. Her jaw was tight.

"Eleven days," she said finally. "They kept you eleven days."

I nodded.

"Derek knew. He knew what that room would do to you."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. The raw skin burned.

"Yes," I said.

She was quiet for a long time. Then she said, "We're leaving. For real this time. We're disappearing."

I looked at her. She wasn't asking.

"Okay," I whispered.

She reached over and took my hand. Held it tight.

"He doesn't get to do this," she said. "Not anymore."

I nodded. But I wasn't thinking about Derek. I was thinking about the room. The walls. The locked door. The eleven days I spent in the dark counting breaths that didn't matter.

I was thinking that some things break you so completely there's nothing left to fix.

And I was thinking that maybe that was exactly what I needed.
