Chapter 3

Jayleen's car smelled like fast food and old coffee. I sat in the passenger seat with the coat she'd given me pulled tight around my shoulders. It was too big. It swallowed me. Through the window I watched the detention center disappear behind us—clean brick, landscaped grounds, nothing that looked like what it was.

The sky was enormous. Gray clouds stretched in every direction. I couldn't stop looking at it. Eleven days without windows. Eleven days of fluorescent lights and concrete walls and air that didn't move. Now the sky went on forever and I couldn't look away.

Jayleen kept glancing at me. Her hands were tight on the wheel.

"You need to eat," she said finally.

I nodded but didn't answer. My voice felt far away. Like it belonged to someone else.

"Sienna."

I turned my head. Looked at her. She was thinner too. Dark circles under her eyes. Her jaw was set the way it got when she was trying not to cry.

"I can't go back there," I said. My voice came out flat. Empty. "To any of it."

She exhaled. Nodded once. "I know. We won't."

She drove us to a motel on the edge of the city. Paid cash. Didn't give a real name. The room had two beds and a window that faced the parking lot. I stood under the shower until the water ran cold. Watched the steam rise. Pressed my palms against the tile and counted my breaths.

When I came out Jayleen had food spread across the desk. Sandwiches. Chips. Bottled water. I sat on the edge of the bed and ate because she was watching. The food tasted like nothing.

"We leave tomorrow," she said. "I already have the plan. New city. New names. Everything."

I nodded.

"He doesn't get to do this," she said. Her voice was hard. "Not anymore."

I looked at her. She wasn't asking. She was telling me. The way she used to when we were kids and she decided we were sneaking extra food from the group home kitchen or skipping the punishment closet by hiding in the basement. She decided and I followed because that was how we survived.

"Okay," I whispered.

She reached over and took my hand. Held it tight.

That night I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. The room was small but the door was unlocked. I could see the parking lot through the window. The sky beyond it. I counted my breaths and felt nothing.

Something had broken in that room. Something I didn't have a name for. It wasn't grief. It wasn't anger. It was the place those things used to live, now empty and quiet and still.

I thought maybe that was exactly what I needed.

The call came three nights later. Two in the morning. My phone lit up on the nightstand. Unknown number. I answered without thinking.

"Sienna Lane?" A woman's voice. Tight. Urgent.

"Yes."

"This is Officer Brennan with Queens Fire Department. There's been an incident at the Riverside Group Home. We were told to contact you."

The words didn't make sense at first. Then they did all at once.

"What kind of incident?"

"A fire. It's active. We have crews on site but—" She paused. "There are children inside."

I was already moving. Pulling on clothes. Jayleen sat up in the other bed.

"What is it?"

"The group home. It's on fire."

She was up before I finished the sentence.

We drove through empty streets. Red lights. No traffic. The sky was black and starless. Jayleen kept her foot on the gas. I pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted.

We smelled the smoke before we saw it. Thick and dark. It filled the air like something alive. Then we turned the corner and the building was there—flames pouring from the second floor windows. Orange light against the night sky. Fire trucks lined the street. Hoses. Voices shouting over the roar.

I got out of the car before Jayleen stopped moving. Ran toward the building. A firefighter grabbed my arm.

"You can't go in there."

"There are kids inside."

"We're working on it—"

"I grew up here. I know the layout."

He hesitated. I pulled free and ran.

The heat hit me like a wall. Smoke everywhere. Thick and choking. I pulled my shirt over my mouth and nose and kept moving. The stairs were on the left. I knew because I'd climbed them a thousand times. In the dark. In the cold. Running from staff who didn't care and older kids who did.

I climbed them now.

The second floor hallway was chaos. Flames crawling up the walls. Ceiling tiles falling. I heard crying. High and terrified. A child's voice.

"Where are you?" I shouted.

The crying got louder. I followed it. Found a door at the end of the hall. Kicked it open. Three kids huddled in the corner. The youngest maybe five. They stared at me with wide eyes.

"Come on," I said. "Now."

I grabbed the smallest one. Told the others to hold onto my shirt. We moved back down the hallway. The smoke was thicker now. I couldn't see. Couldn't breathe. Just kept moving.

We made it to the stairs. Started down. Behind us something cracked. Loud. Final. I looked back. A support beam gave way. Fell across the hallway in a shower of sparks.

I shoved the kids forward. "Go. Run."

They ran. I turned back. Heard another voice. Smaller. Weaker.

I went back up.

The beam had fallen across the doorway to the last bedroom. I could see a shape behind it. Small. Not moving. I grabbed the beam with both hands. The heat seared through my skin. I screamed and pulled. It shifted. I pulled again. It moved just enough.

I reached through. Grabbed the child's arm. Dragged them out. Lifted them. My forearms were on fire. The skin bubbling. I couldn't feel my hands.

I ran.

Down the stairs. Through the smoke. Out into the night. Someone took the child from my arms. I fell to my knees on the sidewalk. Looked down at my forearms. The skin was black and red and split open. I watched it and felt nothing.

Then I looked up.

Across the street. Fifty yards away. Derek's car. He was there. Carrying Ellis. She was limp against him. Eyes closed. Head against his shoulder. He walked her to the passenger side. Opened the door. Settled her in like she was made of glass.

He didn't look back.

Not once.

I knelt there on the sidewalk with my arms burning and smoke in my lungs and watched him drive away.

Jayleen was beside me. Pulling me up. Wrapping something around my arms. Talking to paramedics. I heard her voice but not the words.

I looked down at my forearms. The burns were deep. They would scar. I knew that. I would carry them forever.

I thought: *Good.*

I thought: *Let me remember.*

I thought: *He chose her. Again.*

And something inside me that had been cracked and breaking finally went completely still.

No more counting.

No more waiting.

No more hoping he would choose me.

I was done.
