Chapter 1

The call came at eleven-thirty on a Tuesday night. I was already in bed, staring at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the plaster the way I did most nights when Keith didn't come home.

"Elisa? It's Marcus Webb. From Keith's office."

I sat up. Marcus never called me. Keith had made sure very few people had my number.

"Keith's at Lotus," Marcus said. His voice was careful. "With Athena's crowd. He's had a lot to drink. I thought you should know."

I pressed my palm against my chest where something hot and tight was building. "Thank you."

I hung up and sat there in my oversized T-shirt, looking at the dark screen of my phone. I could stay here. Pretend I hadn't heard. Go to sleep and deal with Keith in the morning when he stumbled in smelling like expensive perfume and other people's cigarettes.

But I was already pulling on jeans. Already grabbing my coat.

The subway to Midtown took forty minutes. I spent it staring at my reflection in the dark window across from me, watching the tunnel lights flicker across my face. My coat was three years old. My boots had a scuff on the toe I'd tried to color in with a Sharpie. I looked exactly like what I was: a woman from Queens going somewhere she didn't belong.

Lotus had a velvet rope and a man in a black suit who looked at me the way you look at a stain on expensive fabric.

"I'm here for Keith Armstrong," I said.

He didn't move. "Mr. Armstrong didn't leave a name."

"I'm his wife."

Something flickered in his face. Not belief. Amusement, maybe. But he stepped aside.

The club was all dark corners and blue light, music so loud it pressed against my ribs. I pushed through the crowd on the main floor, scanning faces, until I saw the roped-off VIP section in the back. Keith was there. In a private booth. Athena Pierce was draped across his lap like a fur coat, one hand in his hair, laughing at something someone had said.

I stopped walking. My chest went tight.

Then I started moving again. Toward the booth. Toward him.

Two women stepped into my path before I got close. They were wearing dresses that cost more than my rent. One of them looked me up and down with the kind of smile that isn't a smile at all.

"Can we help you?" she asked.

"I need to talk to Keith."

"Keith's busy."

"I'm his wife."

The second woman laughed. Actually laughed. "Sure you are, honey."

I tried to step around them. A hand closed on my arm. Hard.

"You need to leave," the first woman said.

I looked past her, directly at Keith. He was watching now. His face was blank. Empty. Like he was looking at a stranger.

"Keith," I said. My voice cracked. "Please."

He didn't move.

Someone shoved me. I stumbled, caught myself on the edge of a table. Hands pushed me down. My knees hit the floor. The music was still pounding. People were turning to look. Phones were coming out.

"This is what happens," one of the women said, "when trash doesn't know its place."

Something cold and wet poured over my head. Champagne. A full bottle. It soaked my hair, my coat, ran down my face and into my eyes. I heard laughter. Saw the flash of a camera.

I looked up. Keith was still in the booth. Still watching. Athena was whispering something in his ear, smiling.

He said nothing. He did nothing.

I got to my feet. My legs were shaking. I walked out of that club with champagne dripping from my hair, my coat stuck to my back, and the sound of laughter following me all the way to the street.

Two hours later, I sat across from Keith in a diner on Eighth Avenue. Fluorescent lights. Plastic menus. The smell of burnt coffee.

He slid a stack of papers across the table.

"Divorce papers," he said. His voice was flat. Controlled. "Sign them."

I stared at the documents. My hands were still shaking.

"You're not serious," I whispered.

"You need to know your place, Elisa." He leaned back, arms crossed. "This is what happens when you forget."

I looked at him. At the man I'd loved for twenty years. The boy who'd fought for me. Who'd shared a single blanket with me in a freezing foster home. Who'd promised me everything.

I didn't sign. I stood up, left the papers on the table, and walked out into the cold.

By morning, the video was everywhere. Someone had edited it. Cut out the part where I'd said I was his wife. Cut out everything except me on my knees, champagne-soaked, while people laughed. The caption read: *Gold digger crashes private event, gets what she deserves.*

I sat on my kitchen floor and watched it loop on my phone. Watched myself humiliated over and over. The comments were worse than the video.

I called Keith. He answered on the fourth ring.

"Please," I said. "Just tell them the truth. One statement. That's all I'm asking."

"It'll blow over," he said. "Drawing attention will make it worse."

"Keith—"

He hung up.

I sat there on the floor, pressed my palms together in my lap, and stared at the wall. I didn't cry. I waited for anger, for grief, for anything I could name.

Nothing came. Just a cold, spreading silence where something warm used to be.
